Cromwell etc
[edit]I'm fairly new too. I've been forcing myself up a steep learning curve, trying to absorb the basic policies and technicalities, though I'm still a long way off. I started by happily editing articles in my own way, but I've rapidly come to the conclusion that my changes must take account of policies and guidelines and of what is likely to happen in the future. I believe that Wikipedia will evolve to a core encyclopedia, of very high quality, that supersedes all other encyclopedias, enclosed within a vast shambolic outer encyclopedia of variable and sometimes pitiful quality. The core encyclopedia will target articles on important topics, of which I'm sure Cromwell will be one. To achieve the necessary level of quality there will first be a drive towards increased verifiability (already underway); we can see in the "Featured Articles" (a good recent example is Dürer's Rhinoceros, which despite leaning on few sources makes citations for most of its information) and now also in the "Good Articles", an insistence by the reviewers on full and thorough citing.
The reason for this, I'm sure, is to armour-plate Wikipedia against accusations that an encyclopedia which can be edited by anyone must on that account be an unreliable source of information. The next quality level, in the future, will I believe be "verified" articles—in other words, articles that are not only verifiable but which have been verified by a fact-checking process; once an article passes that test, it will be protected as a prime article. If I'm right, then the best thing we can do for articles is to reference them meticulously and fully, even to the point of page numbers, so that they can be checked readily; if we don't do that work now, someone else will have to do it in the future. I say all this to explain why I might have come over a bit prickly the other day, for which I apologise. qp10qp 02:28, 6 October 2006 (UTC)

Protection for Cromwell article

Age category

- Using an age group category, such as Category:Wikipedians in their 30s

Cromwell

I re-tweaked the article and added a ref from the 1900 Biography (and 2001 reprint) about how how Cromwell was hated in Ireland. I'm sure that any Irish history book would say the same. Will find some additional ref re perception of genocide. I saw the discussion on the page re this, but honestly, from the history it's hard to argue against it being a reasonable characterisation of what he (a) intended and (b) partially achieved. Commonwealth, timelines and help!

Since you appear to be quite knowledagble on the subject, I'd also like to pick your brain a little while I have to opportunity. The issue I met when I came across the Commonwealth/Protectorate articles was in linking the Template:Irish_states templates on "Irish" states and a Template:Timeline_of_Irish_states timeline of Irish states to their various article i.e. where should I have linked to, the Protectorate article or the Commonwealth article (hence your solution fits my needs perfectly!). As it was, I had (doh!) forgotten the Commonwealth in the timeline (it initially was not in the template either, as neither was UKGBNI - definitions of what is an "Irish" state). However, now that I have rememebered it, I now want to the Commonwealth to the timeline, but am not sure where to add it.
What's you opinion? Does it overlap with Confederate Ireland or should it come in straight afterwards? Is there an overlap period of the Kingdom of Ireland (albeit without a king) and the Commonwealth? From 53-60, its pretty clear that the Commonwealth is the only state in Ireland, but for the period 49-53 - what should the timeline show?
Also, I am planning a much more adventerous timeline for the whole of the British Isles (obviously running vertically!) with pointers to major events of consquence for the whole islands (e.g. Norman conquest of England, plantation of Ulster, Union of the Crowns, etc.) I would really like to run this from the pre-Celtic -> Celtic -> {Brythons, Picts, Gaels} -> etc era. I'm getting a bit annoyed by the editing of this article. Me, you and a few other people have been trying to discuss the historical facts and certain other people have been obstinately refusing to discuss the facts and trying to lob a load of pov into the article. I find this very frustrating because it seems that one user in particular does not even seem to know anything much about the period but wants to completely skew the article in the direction of his pov anyway. Not really. To be honest, I thought we hadthe article in a decent enough state before the recent batch of changes began. Now I'd like to pare down the pov and argument sections a bit. Johann Hari
[edit]Hi. This is a quick note about the editing of the Johann Hari page, which I know you've helpfully intervened on in the past.
As reading though the page's history will show, the user Felix-Felix has described Hari as "a self-publicising careerist, and an especially unpleasant one at that", accused him of being in favour of "the destruction of Untermenschen" (when in fact he is an Amnesty International award-winner), inserted fictitious claims he went to the most exclusive public school in Britain when in fact his father is a bus driver, and, most crucially, inserted poorly sourced claims that he "fabricated" a story he wrote about.
This is a pattern of falsehood and animus that really worries me. This user is now insisting on his right to reinsert the claims that hari farbricated a story, sourcing them to a magazine that wiki administrators have already said is not reliable. Dave r has been smearing me with these accusations, one of which is false, the other taken out of context, and utterly irrelevant. The newsletter is back! Many things have gone on during the past few months, but many things have not. While the assessment drive helped revitalize the assessment department of the project, many other departments have received no attention. Most notably: peer review and our "workgroups". A day long IRC meeting has been planned for October 13th, with the major focus being which areas of the project are "dead", what should our goals be as a project, and how to "revive" the dead areas of our project. Contribute to the discussion on the the new channel (see below) We decided to deliver this newsletter to all project members this month but only those with their names down here will get it delivered in the future. This is your newsletter and you can be involved in the creation of the next issue. Any and all contributions are welcome. Major Nelson
[edit]Hello, do you know if the above figure is one of any importance in 1640's England?.
I recently started an article on the Battle of Arklow (1649). The Parliamentarian army was led by Nelson. However there is no article on him. Do you know if he is important enough to warrant an article?.

I confess I'm no fan of Cromwell (Royalist sympathies LOL), but his wife needed her own article. There's not much biography on Elizabeth as historians have pretty much ignored her, don't you agree?--jeanne (talk) 17:19, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

Settler rights?
[edit]Stop quibbling. The planter's records are in English and surviving accounts by them are way more numerous than the accounts (often passed down verbally) by their victims. Imagine the Germans won WW2: all the "massacres" we'd learn, were caused by British "rebels". Poor Nazi families cast out into the cold winter night by vengeful English, before the English were slaughtered (understandably) in "response". Sarah777 (talk) 01:19, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
- I would say "the only good settler is a dead settler"; but J Dorney would accuse me of imposing 21st Century concepts on 17th century events. But it appears that modern views of "massacre", "genocide", "home", "murder" and so forth seem to be entirely OK when we are considering the poor planter's suffering.
