WikiCup 2012 January newsletter
WikiCup 2012 is off to a flying start. At the time of writing, we have 112 contestants; comparable to last year, but slightly fewer than 2010. Signups will remain open for another week, after which time they will be closed for this year. Our currrent far-away leader is Grapple X (submissions), due mostly to his work on a slew of good articles about The X-Files; there remain many such articles waiting to be reviewed at good article candidates. Second place is currently held by Ruby2010 (submissions), whose points come mostly from good articles about television episodes, although good article reviews, did you knows and an article about a baroness round out the score. In third place is Jivesh boodhun (submissions), who has scored 200 points for his work on a single featured article, as well as points for work on others, mostly in the area of pop music. In all, nine users have 100 or more points. However, at the other end of the scale, there are still dozens of participants who are yet to score. Please remember to update your submission pages promptly!
The 64 highest scoring participants will advance to round 2 in a month's time. There, they will be split into eight random groups of eight. The score needed to reach the next round is not at all clear; last year, 8 points guaranteed a place. The year before, 20.
A few participants and their work warrant a mention for achieving "firsts" in this competition.
- 12george1 (submissions) was the first to score, with his good article review of Illinois v. McArthur.
- 12george1 (submissions) was also the first to score points for an article, thanks to his work on Hurricane Debby (1982)- now a good article. Tropical storms have featured heavily in the Cup, and good articles currently have a relatively fast turnaround time for reviews.
- Sp33dyphil (submissions) was the first to score points for a did you know, with Russian submarine K-114 Tula. Military history is another subject which has seen a lot of Cup activity.
- Sp33dyphil (submissions) is also the first person to successfully claim bonus points. Terminator 2: Judgment Day is now a good article, and was eligible for bonus points because the subject was covered on more than 20 other Wikipedias at the start of the competition. It is fantastic to see bonus points being claimed so early!
- Speciate (submissions) was the first to score points for an In the News entry, with Paedophryne amauensis. The lead image from the article was also used on the main page for a time, and it's certainly eye-catching!
- Jivesh boodhun (submissions) was the first to score points for a featured article, and is, at the moment, the only competitor to claim for one. The article, "Halo" (Beyoncé Knowles song), was also worth double points because of its wide coverage. While this is an article that Jivesh and others have worked on for some time, it is undeniable that he has put considerable work into it this year, pushing it over the edge.
We are yet to see any featured lists, featured topics or good topics, but this is unsurprising; firstly, the nomination processes with each of these can take some time, and, secondly, it can take a considerable amount of time to work content to this level. In a similar vein, we have seen only one featured article. The requirement that content must have been worked on this year to be eligible means that we did not expect to see these at the start of the competition. No points have been claimed for featured portals or pictures, but these are not content types which are often claimed; the former has never made a big impact on the WikiCup, while the latter has not done so since 2009's competition.
A quick rules clarification before the regular notices: If you are concerned that another user is claiming points inappropriately, please contact a judge to take a look at the article. Competitors policing one another can create a bad atmosphere, and may lead to inconsistencies and mistakes. Rest assured that we, the judges, are making an effort to check submissions, but it is possible that we will miss something. On a loosely related note: If you are concerned that your nomination, be it at good article candidates, a featured process or anywhere else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Your review work
Hi, I just wanted to thank you for your time and input in taking on doing the GA review for the Siri Nilsen article. Without a doubt the whole GA review process made this a lot better Arts bio article than it would have ultimately been otherwise. So thanks again and take care. Evenrød (talk) 14:33, 1 February 2012 (UTC)
Hey, I'm afraid I have removed two good article reviews you have submitted, as they are not eligible. Talk:Siri Nilsen/GA1 was started last year, and Talk:Bastion (video game)/GA1 is minimal- while I've no doubt that it's a perfectly good review, shorter reviews are not eligible for points in the WikiCup. If you have any questions, please contact me on my talk page. Thanks, J Milburn (talk) 16:33, 1 February 2012 (UTC)

Peer review limits changed
This is a notice to all users who currently have at least one open peer review at Wikipedia:Peer review. Because of the large number of peer review requests and relatively low number of reviewers, the backlog of PRs has been at 20 or more almost continually for several months. The backlog is for PR requests which have gone at least four days without comments, and some of these have gone two weeks or longer waiting for a review.
While we have been able to eventually review all PRs that remain on the backlog, something had to change. As a result of the discussion here, the consensus was that all users are now limited to one (1) open peer review request.
If you already have more than one open PR, that is OK in this transition period, but you cannot open any more until all your active PR requests have been closed. If you would like someone to close a PR for you, please ask at Wikipedia talk:Peer review. If you want to help with the backlog, please review an article whoe PR request is listed at Wikipedia:Peer review/backlog/items. Thanks, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 02:50, 3 February 2012 (UTC)
Disambiguation link notification
Hi. When you recently edited At Newport 1960, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Medley and Hipster (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.
It's OK to remove this message. Also, to stop receiving these messages, follow these opt-out instructions. Thanks, DPL bot (talk) 10:38, 17 January 2012 (UTC)
M (James Bond)
Hi, I've done the edits you outlined on the M (James Bond) GA review. There have been two points raised by another editor, one about the quote box (what he asks isn't the right thing to do) and one about the amount of white space around the lists. I'm not sure how to deal with it as I think the lists (as they are chronological) sit better in one, not two columns (there's also the additional concern that with the sub-sections shorter the images will run into each other!). As the reviewer, do you have any thoughts on this? Thanks very much - and for undertaking the review! - SchroCat (^ • @) 14:03, 4 February 2012 (UTC)

Broken Sword 4
Hi, Mr. Orange Pumpkin - a Great one indeed! While I was still a IP User, I promoted Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars to GA. When I signed up to Wikipedia, I also promoted BS2 and 3 to GA! Since You are a very talented editor, and a fan of Broken Sword, could you PLEASE help me with Broken Sword 4, since not even the plot section is not fully written - and I'm BAD with Plots! :) Later, I also plan to bring the Broken Sword series article to GA (allready worked on it a bit), and I turned the four badly made lists of characters of BS1, 2, 3 and 4 into one big, well-organised list "List of Broken Sword characters" (FULL SERIES) - which I want to bring to FL! :) So, could you please help? All the Very Best --Khanassassin (talk) 11:22, 11 February 2012 (UTC)

Disruptive editing
I don't know what you mean by this. My edits are all improvements to pages, mostly French communes or tennis-related articles. Ksnow (talk) 13:04, 11 February 2012 (UTC)Ksnow
Although I don't agree with the use of n-dashes in tennis scores, I think if you check, you will find that I am not adding scores, just putting in commas, etc. I am certainly not going to spend my time changing all the hyphens to n-dashes. Apology accepted. Ksnow (talk) 21:40, 11 February 2012 (UTC)Ksnow
Inspirations for James Bond

Earl Hines
Hi GOP:- Re your, "Hello, why do you believe that a video from a Scientology member is WP:RS. Regards.--♫GoP♫TCN 22:07, 10 February 2012 (UTC)"
I'd say, "Wot??!! If you honestly think, GOP, that this great Hines vid comes from [I assume you mean uploaded by] a Scientology member, why not look it [XenuTV] up on, er, Wiki! Or Google it. In fact Mark Bunker/XenuTV is also, along the way, a great source for the very best jazz films as well as being an Emmy winner himself". [Hope he doesn't sue you!]
But seriously, it's surely a real a pity if that Hines film can't be linked to Wiki for the benefit of Wiki readers - it's great. If it can't be, it can't but, I wonder, can YOU perhaps find a way of doing it? It would be good.Tolesi (talk) 20:01, 14 February 2012 (UTC)

Sammy Who?
The second infobox is pretty distracting and I am for it to remove it from the article. Or you convince me it is a notable cover. Regards.♫GoP♫TCN 12:24, 26 February 2012 (UTC)
- I'm not sure why the second single infobox in (Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay is "distracting". It lies to the right of the running text just as the infobox for the Otis Redding version does. As for the cover being notable, it was a charting single by a major performer and has received coverage in multiple independent sources and represents an important (negative) aspect of Hagar's career. I added brief additional text to try and convey this but many sources on the subject (e.g., contemporary news coverage) are not in electronic form and not as readily available for me to cite. Because it is a non-album single, there is no album article to host such information and Hagar's career is too extensive for the material on this one song to fit with the tone of the Sammy Hagar article. As far as the larger issue of multiple single infoboxes in article, I have not found any definitive consensus to be gleaned from the Template talk:Infobox single archives but I routinely come across articles such as Lean on Me (song) or Always on My Mind where infoboxes are eagerly employed. — AjaxSmack 03:38, 27 February 2012 (UTC)
