2016 Wikimedia Foundation Executive Director Search Community Survey
The Board of Trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation has appointed a committee to lead the search for the foundation’s next Executive Director. One of our first tasks is to write the job description of the executive director position, and we are asking for input from the Wikimedia community. Please take a few minutes and complete this survey to help us better understand community and staff expectations for the Wikimedia Foundation Executive Director.

Refs
The purpose of adding brackets around author's name is to make that name compatible with the Vancouver format in which the remaining authors in that reference are cited. Without those brackets the reference generates an error. --Dcirovic (talk) 06:23, 3 June 2016 (UTC)
- @Dcirovic: Thanks, that makes sense. I've undone my reversion. Graham87 06:32, 3 June 2016 (UTC)
Lisa Beamer; merge with Todd Beamer
I think that Lisa Beamer should be merged with Todd Beamer. She is not really notable for anything except being his wife. I recommend that this article be merged with Todd Beamer. With due respect to Lisa Beamer, she's notable only for being the wife of Todd Beamer, and that doesn't warrant a separate article. After all, some of the 9/11 victim's articles don't have separate pages about their families. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.13.17.40 (talk) 14:44, 6 June 2016 (UTC)
Bach cantata
Hi, Graham, I don't know if you followed the history of BWV 4 (talk archived). Brianboulton restored the version approved as FA, but he can't also move it back to that name Christ lag in Todes Banden, BWV 4, see his talk. Could you? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:12, 21 June 2016 (UTC)
- @Gerda Arendt and Brianboulton: All done, though it worked for me without a hitch for some reason (and the page hasn't been move-protected, nor was there any history in the way). Graham87 18:07, 21 June 2016 (UTC)
- Thank you! - I thought it was easy, because I reverted once without problem, - I just don't revert the same thing twice, not even later. I work on the next one, btw, BWV 161, will grow, but copyediting and watching is already welcome, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:39, 21 June 2016 (UTC)

Regine Schumann
Dear Graham, it's been a while, but now i have another artist-page, which i want to contribute to the english wikipedia. I have built it in my own sfer here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Gyanda/Regine_Schumann - could you be so kind to have a look, concerning the formatting? And additional, could you have a look on the german site (which i also wrote) - concerning the pictures... https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regine_Schumann
"Live and work" has two pictures, which i did upload at Commons and do have all permissions also (as well from the artist self as well from the photographers) i would love to have it also in my english site. The format in german is: {{Mehrere Bilder
| Breite = 160 | Kopfzeile = Regine Schumann: Color Satin Karlsruhe, 2015 | Bild1 = EWE 1197 Color Satin Eberhard Weible groß 27.02.2015.jpg | Untertitel1 = Werk bei Tageslicht | Bild2 = EWE 1198 Color Satin Eberhard Weible groß 27.02.2015.jpg | Untertitel2 = Werk bei Schwarzlicht
how would i translate this format into the english wikipedia? I would be very very thankful, if you could help me, please. Kind regards, --Gyanda (talk) 21:17, 3 July 2016 (UTC)

So sorry! I can't think how I came to delete your sound clip. It certainly was not intended! Tim riley talk 12:34, 5 August 2016 (UTC)
- @Tim riley: No worries. I used the WikiBlame tool to figure out that you'd removed it in this edit, and checked your contributions around that time to find out that you'd removed it per the FAC discussion. I didn't make or upload the file; it was part of a bulk upload of Pandora Records music. When I discovered that collection on Wikipedia (which I later cleaned up), I fell in love with this recording of the bassoon sonata. It's not perfect ... Arthur Grossman struggles with some of the faster passages in this live performance. However he plays the slower passages (which make up the bulk of the sonata) exquisitely, and I never tire of listening to this sound file. Graham87 12:44, 5 August 2016 (UTC)
- For good measure, I'll ping Gaff, who raised the concerns that led to the sound file's removal. Graham87 12:48, 5 August 2016 (UTC)
Heights/weights etc IP
Hi, I noticed you blocked the dog breed/rapper IP last night? I guess it is the person discussed in the AN/I thread? He seems to have changed IP again to this one. Perhaps I'm just getting confused as he seems to geolocate to Philadelphia again? I'll ping @Drmies: here too (partly in retaliation for him linking me to some rapper stuff ... ) Should the IPs be listed on the now very old SPI or just continue in the hope it can be kept on top of? SagaciousPhil - Chat 13:20, 5 August 2016 (UTC)
- And this looks to be him starting today? SagaciousPhil - Chat 13:49, 5 August 2016 (UTC)
- @Sagaciousphil: I think it's just a case of revert, block, ignore. I think between you, Drmies, and I, we've gotten everything covered. Graham87 14:32, 5 August 2016 (UTC)
- Seems to be back again already. I've just done a straight revert on all of them. Geolocating to Baltimore now; they always used to be either Baltimore or Philadelphia. I sometimes wonder if there are two of them? Or if when it's me that reverts it makes him worse. ;-) SagaciousPhil - Chat 16:07, 5 August 2016 (UTC)
- Yergh. I've blocked them. Who knows what's going on? Let's hope there's not a pack of them. Graham87 16:27, 5 August 2016 (UTC)

You said, "No, because in some cases, saving a revision does different things from previewing it."

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Howie Schwab, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Baldwin, New York. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Audio files
Hi Graham. Many thanks again for your help with Bach's trio sonatas for organ. I'm still busy devising content for the main sections of the article, including creating my own audio organ files, but if you can think of any audio recordings that you want to add to the discography, external links section, etc, I would be very grateful. There are arrangements for chamber instrumental groups (I think there's one by the Purcell quartet that has been highly praised). So anything you can think of. The more the merrier. I don't know if the oboist Marcel Ponsele had made any CD based on these. He has recorded some of the harpsichord concertos for oboe or cor anglais (often presumed to be the instruments for which some of the conertos were originally written).
At the moment I have been creating audio files for BWV 39 using linux software. Instead of midi files, which rely on a reader's software and configuration files, I have been producing ogg files where I can choose and adjust the instrument files myself. There is still a slight glitch with linux and audio, in that the software TiMidity++ creates a slight click or crackle when starting. I might install one of the very recent versions of this software which solves the problem (apparently one symbol is wrong in the software). Here is an example that I produced—the orchestral sinfonia at the beginning of the first movement of BWV 39—with 24 bit sound. On the vlc player on my laptop, it plays without clicks; but on the wikipedia software there is a slight click at the very beginning.
Please tell me what you think. The most recent version of TiMidity++ is only available as a source, but I could install it in the tmp part of my computer just for the purpose of creating wav files from midi files (the intermediate step to creating ogg files).
Otherwise, what do you think of the quality of my ogg file? Although not perfect, it seems reasonable to me. Regards, Mathsci (talk) 09:30, 6 September 2016 (UTC)
You shouldn't modify my own contributions on talk pages
I see you reverted a whole bunch of my contributions to talk pages. As far as I know this are mine to edit as I see fit as long as I don't modify other people's contributions. Please do not touch my contributions to talk pages again. Contact Basemetal here 11:26, 6 September 2016 (UTC)
I'm now following the guidelines strictly:
====Own comments==== {{shortcut|WP:REDACT|WP:REDACTED}} So long as no one has yet responded to your comment, it's accepted and common practice that you may continue to edit your remarks for a short while to correct mistakes, add links or otherwise improve them. If you've accidentally posted to the wrong page or section or if you've simply changed your mind, it's been only a short while and no one has yet responded, you may remove your comment entirely. But if anyone has already replied to or quoted your original comment, changing your comment may deprive any replies of their original context, and this should be avoided. Once others have replied, or even if no one's replied but '''it's been more than a short while''', if you wish to change or delete your comment, it is commonly best practice to indicate your changes. *Any deleted text should be marked with <code><s>...</s></code> or <code><del>...</del></code>, which renders in most browsers as struck-through text, e.g., <del>deleted</del>. *Any inserted text should marked with <code><u>...</u></code> or <code><ins>...</ins></code>, which renders in most browsers as underlined text, e.g., <ins>inserted</ins>. *Best practice is to add a new timestamp, e.g., <code>; edited ~~~~~</code>, using five tildes, after the original timestamp at the end of your post. *To add an explanation of your change, you may add a new comment immediately below your original or elsewhere in discussion as may be most appropriate, insert a comment in square brackets, e.g., ''"the default width is <del>100px</del> <ins>120px</ins> [the default changed last month]"'', or use <code>[[wp:CURRENTSECTION#New section|[corrected]]]</code> to insert a superscript note, e.g., [[wp:CURRENTSECTION#New section|[corrected]]], linking to a later subsection for a detailed explanation.
You can see that contrary to what you said there is a provision for editing your own comments when it has been more than a little while. I'm now following those guidelines. Please don't touch my comments. Thank you.

- And btw, not to answer this question you asked at my talk page ("how does the Wikipedia community besides you benefit from your recent edits to talk pages?") but to comment on it: While the actions of editors are in general supposed to benefit the encyclopedia and the community, it will be a dark day when any editor can grab another and order them to justify any action in terms of the supposed benefit to etc. and then appoint themselves judge of whether that other editor's action benefitted those or not. Then we're back to Stalin's Russia. It is understood that the freedom to judge of the quality of one's own contribution to the talk page and the peace of mind that gives contributors will as a whole benefit the encyclopedia and the community. As to whether my action is unusual, maybe, but perhaps it shouldn't be. Many of my contributions just littered the talk pages for no purpose and I have seen many many other editors contributions that do the same. Maybe the readability and the usefulness of the talk pages would benefit from more than a few editors taking a critical look at their own contributions and doing what I do. Basemetal 14:34, 6 September 2016 (UTC)
Other people's talk pages
I had deleted a bunch of edits I had left on some people's talk pages under the assumption that they will be automatically notified and can revert or object to what I had done. Then you saw fit to revert or delete my edits. I'd like to know who appointed you to take the action you took above the heads of the owners of those talk pages. While they were not my talk pages neither were they yours. If those people object they will be automatically notified and can take the action they see fit if they object to what I had done. So, again who authorized you to take the action you took? Please show me any guideline that says your action was legitimate. Basemetal 13:34, 9 September 2016 (UTC)

Mind unprotecting this article? looks plenty stable to me now (after 6 years). MediaKill13 (talk) 22:14, 9 September 2016 (UTC)
- @MediaKill13: I didn't do the protection; my name is only in the log as a side effect of me importing an edit into that article. The person who originally protected the page was Angusmclellan, who did it per this message. Even discounting the fact that the protection was based on an ArbCom case, I'm not inclined to unprotect highly viewed articles about important topics which could be tempting targets for vandalism, like this article is. Extended confirmed protection
Hello, Graham87. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.
Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.
In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:
- Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
- A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.
Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:48, 23 September 2016 (UTC)
