Welcome!

Hello, Gphoto, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or place {{helpme}} on your talk page and someone will show up shortly to answer your questions. Again, welcome!  --Quiddity 03:10, 8 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi :) I'm afraid I had to remove your portal from Portal:Browse, as that page is only for listing portals once they are completed. You should check out Wikipedia:Portal, particularly the guidelines, for further info on improving and finishing your portal. You could also add a request for additional contributors at the Bulletin board (Wikipedia:Community Portal). Thanks. --Quiddity 03:10, 8 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the advice. I am new around here and I am trying my best to help out. I will read through the links you showed me. -Gphoto 13:12, 8 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
No problem :) As someone here said, you have to make 50 mistakes before you'll know your way around :) --Quiddity 19:53, 8 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Portal review

[edit]

Hi how are you? Welcome to Wikipedia. WP:RFF probably is not the place to ask for portal feedback. ACtually I don't know any place for that. So, I will give you feedback via talk pages, is that alright? But I need to go to school now, so, maybe tonight. Good luck and take care -- Imoeng 23:28, 9 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks -Gphoto 23:30, 9 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hows it going? So here it is. I think the portal is already nice, it has a good start, well done. I also have an experience of making a portal, I made the Indonesia portal and luckily it reached featured portal. So I am going to help you to reach that too! The main thing is, since the portal is about photography, try to exploit it, by using heaps of nice photograph to lighten the portal. I really like the clouds and the blue marble, nice selections! Here are some possible improvements.
  • Try to expand the intro a little bit more, probably one or two sentences about the history of photography, so it does not look skinny.
  • About the layout, I cannot see the frame for each box, so its like blended with the background, try to figure that out.
  • Avoid red links, for the archives, just fill the page with something. My point is, avoid red links.
  • In the Project box, try to put some picture, cause it is very strange just to put one word there. Or maybe you can put it in "What you can do" box.
That is all for now, you can also copy things I have done for the portal I've created. In fact, copy everything! :P If you want, I can teach you will article schedule, so it changes automatically every period of time. For any question, please ask it on my talk page, so I will notice it. Cheers -- Imoeng 09:28, 10 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It is really nice! And thank you for taking my suggestions :) I like the introduction, really, it is not too long and not too short, the info is also very good. I also like to topics box, and the fact that you have gathered all the topics is really awesome. Here are some points.

  • There is an inline citation in the selected article, which I suggest you should remove it.
  • You need to add photo credit in the selected picture section. Use <small> Photo credit: ABC </small>.
  • In the photography topics section, "forensic photography" is a red link, you might want to fix that.
  • Lastly, the Associated Wikipedia box overlaps the topic box. I don't know whether it is just my browser or what, but you could check it :)

So, yeah, its done, congratulation, its really nice!! Now if you want to reach Featured Portal, I think you should implement the auto-rotation system, do you want me to assist you or you are alright? Cheers -- Imoeng 17:48, 10 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm going to lighten the shade of grey used, I find the black-on-grey very hard to read. It looks really great though. I've added it back to Portal:Browse, and added it (along with yourself as the creator/maintainer) at Wikipedia:Portal/Directory. Great work :) --Quiddity 20:09, 10 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Again, congratulation for the completion, and now it is back to Portal:Browse. Also thanks for the barnstar, I really appreciate it :)
So basically, you need to choose the period of rotation, daily? monthly? or weekly. Or even fortnight, it is absolutely up to you. If I am correct, this week is the 42nd week (I must check that). So, you need to gather some articles, pictures and other stuff you want to rotate and put each one of them into a corresponding date, got it? Here are the steps.
  • Select a selected article
  • Make a summary from the article (just like you have done)
  • Put this summary into a new page, called Portal:Photography/AOTW/42, 2006. Again, that is the format for Portal:Indonesia, it is up to you to follow that or make your own format. If you want monthly rotation, just put it in the current month, like Portal:Photography/AOTW/October, 2006.
  • In the selected article box/section, put {{Portal:Photography/AOTW/{{CURRENTWEEK}}, {{CURRENTYEAR}}}}, so that everything on the summary page will be shown the same on the portal page.
  • Repeat this process many times until you have had enough :P
  • So when the 43rd week comes, the article will rotate itself to the corresponding week.
Okay, I will let you go and digest these first, :D, again, please do not hesitate to wake me up in the middle of a night, hehehhee. Btw you might want to see Portal:Indonesia/ST_List. It is the collection of all selected things. It is not necessary, but somewhat useful. Good luck and take care -- Imoeng 20:42, 10 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

First of all, sorry to check your contributions. But LoST is a GREAT name!! I should have thought about that, ahahahha. Good luck, I can see you've implemented it correctly. Cheers -- Imoeng 12:00, 11 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Portal

[edit]

Hi Gphoto, how are you going? And hows the portal going? It is nice already mate, good job! Now if you need some help, just drop me a line. Cheers -- Imoeng 20:58, 15 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello how are you? The portal is looking awesome! And I am sure it will pass WP:FPO. I have changed it slightly, that if you press the edit buttons for the selected article and biography, you will edit the respective week's article. Also one more thing, it is rather odd when you put picture thumbnails and the captions inside the selected article and biography. It is not wrong, but I find it wastes the space inside the box. Apart from that, it is really cool. Congrats! Imoeng 20:46, 19 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hey I really really sorry about the objection, but hey, the WP:PID was objected as well. I have made some improvements, tell me what you think. Cheers -- Imoeng 09:00, 20 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Cheers. By the way, I was thinking to make a shortcut to the portal. What do you think about P:PHOTO or WP:PHOTO or WP:PHOTOGRAPHY or P:PHOTOGRAPHY. LOL - Imoeng 12:36, 20 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think I will make WP:PHOTO and WP:PHOTOGRAPHY, just for formalities :P Cheers -- Imoeng 12:39, 20 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Umm, btw, could you use the previous heading, cause it wills save space, cheers :P. About the to-do list, I reckon it is because the WikiProject Photography is inactive. You can always create it yourself, and it feels better at the end of the nomination :D. So is there anything I can help? Cheers -- Imoeng 12:44, 20 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You can copy Wikipedia:Community portal/Opentask and change the entries, if you want. I think that is the best option. Cheers -- Imoeng 12:48, 20 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
No, you are not bothering me, that is alright :D. There are some ways to ask for more input, but the most conventional way is to "spam" users' talk pages. Have you made some friends (connections) here? You can always ask from anyone. The other thing is to tell Esperanza, but I see you haven't joined it. Why don't you spam users' talk pages while I ask it at Esperanza? I need to watch The Simpsons now :P. Cheers -- Imoeng 01:06, 21 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have "improved" the way related portals box looks, hope you don't mind. I also hope that you don't get bothered or mad because I keep involved in the portal improvement, I just want the portal looks cool :D. Cheers -- Imoeng 19:26, 21 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Umm, click the main portal edit, and change the header links. I'll do it, no problem :D. Cheers -- Imoeng 01:13, 22 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Done! :D Cheers -- Imoeng 01:17, 22 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
No problem, I reckon everything has been addressed. Now the chance of getting the status is very very high!! Cheers -- Imoeng 01:20, 22 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: FP candidate photography

[edit]

The upper limit that I'd recommend would be 600px, which should allow it to look more-or-less reasonable on an 800px monitor; anything larger than that is likely to break the overall layout. Hope that helps! Kirill Lokshin 02:00, 20 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Status

[edit]

Oh, it is pretty complicated. You need to create a monobook, User:Gphoto/monobook.js. Then visit User:Topaz and search for the code. Copy all the code, and then refresh your page. And you are done. Cheers -- Imoeng 01:30, 22 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Btw do you have msn? It would be easier. Cheers -- Imoeng 01:30, 22 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You helped choose Mark Twain as this week's WP:AID winner

[edit]
Thank you for your support of the Article Improvement Drive.
This week Mark Twain was selected to be improved to featured article status.
Hope you can help.

Random

[edit]

Hi how are you? Yes, I think it is alright, as there is no policy states that. However maybe if you go random, it will be somewhat strange. Maybe ask people you have met before. Cheers -- Imoeng 21:19, 24 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Better, and it is great! Okay talk to you later, need to go to schoo. Cheers -- Imoeng 21:24, 24 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Photos

[edit]

WHOAAA!! Are those your own work? Oh my God! What a beauty, you are a really talented photographer! I will nominate some of them to WP:FP. You remind me of User:Fir0002, pretty much the same age as you and have tons of amazing pics. I don't know about photography much, but I like the bowl of olives pic. Greatness! Cheers -- Imoeng 22:25, 25 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi how are you? I suggest you wait until tomorrow, when it will be really 14 days (two weeks). Also I suggest you to contact Kirill and ask him. Usually, he is the one who tags portals with FPO template. Good luck! (You don't need luck though :) Cheers -- Imoeng 06:49, 1 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, it's usually cyberjunkie that tags them; I just fill in when he's not around. ;-)
In any case, the featured portal process is very low-traffic, so nomination times are quite long to compensate for that. It's not uncommon for a nomination to take three or four weeks before it's closed. Kirill Lokshin 05:13, 2 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to Esperanza!

[edit]

Welcome, Gphoto, to Esperanza! As you might know, all the Esperanzians share one important goal: the success of this encyclopedia. Within that, we then attempt to strengthen the community bonds, and be the "approachable" side of the project. All of our ideals are held in the Charter, the governing document of the association.

Now that you are a member you should read the guide to what to do now or you may be interested in some of our programs. A quite important program is Stressbusters, which seeks to support editors who have encountered any stress from their Wikipedia events, and are seeking to leave the project. So far, Esperanza can be credited with the support and retention of several users. We will send you newsletters to keep you up to date. Also, we have a calendar of special events, member birthdays, and other holidays that you can add to and follow.

In addition to these projects, several more missions of Esperanza are in development, and are currently being created at Esperanza/Proposals.

If you have any other questions, concerns, comments, or general ideas, Esperanzian or otherwise, know that you can always contact our administrator general Natalya by email or talk page. Consider introducing yourself at the Esperanza talk page! Alternatively, you could communicate with fellow users via our IRC channel, #wikipedia-esperanza (which is also good for a fun chat or two :). If you're new to IRC, you may find help at an IRC tutorial. I thank you for joining Esperanza, and look forward to working with you in making Wikipedia a better place to work!

Program Feature: Admin Coaching (needs coaches!)
Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach.

Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.

What's New?
The Tutorial Drive is a new Esperanza program! In an effort to make complicated processes on Wikipedia easier for everyone, Esperanza working to create and compile a list of tutorials about processes here on Wikipedia. Consider writing one!
A discussion on how Esperanza relates to the encyclopedia has been started; please add your thoughts.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  • The list of proposed programs has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  • There is now a new program: the Tutorial Drive! Consider writing a tutorial on something you are good at doing on Wikipedia.
  • The suggestion of adding a cohesive look to all the Esperanza pages is being considered; join the discussion if you are interested!
  • In order to make a useful interlanguage welcome template, those involved in translation projects will be asked what English Wikipedia policies are most important and confusing to editors coming from other language Wikipedias.
  • A discussion of Esperanza's role in Wikipedia is being held, with all thoughts of all Esperanzians wanted!
  • Shreshth91 informed everyone that he will be leaving the Esperanza council as life is rather busy; his spot will be filled by the runner up from the last election, HighwayCello.
Signed...
Although having the newsletter appear on everyone's userpage is desired, this may not be ideal for everyone. If, in the future, you wish to receive a link to the newsletter, rather than the newsletter itself, you may add yourself to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Newsletter/Opt Out List.
