One benefit of merging is that it makes it easier to handle in-universe context, and give a uniform treatment of sources and external links. Another is that it makes it easier to monitor for vandalism. Now that we can redirect to a section heading, the cost of merging is lower. Having said that, I do agree with most of this essay.
