Welcome new user

[edit]

Hello, User:GianoM, I see you opened an account last year and began to make edits to the encyclopaedia but did not receive a welcome. So let me belatedly say you are most welcome . Here's a standard welcome box with lots of useful links. I hope you get pleasure from editing and making Wikipedia an even better resource for the community. Wikipedia encourages members to jump in and make corrections and contributions to articles. I myself found the Be bold guideline particularly encouraging when I was getting started. I also found the Wikipedia:Cheatsheet a useful quick reference for editing text.

If you have any questions about the project don't hesitate to contact me on my talk page here User_talk:Lumos3.

Happy editing,

Lumos3 (talk) 08:34, 12 April 2011 (UTC) , Wikipedia Welcoming Committee.[reply]

Please note that an infobox is not enough: an article must include some actual text. I'll add a minimal introductory sentence to the stub you started, but please expand the body of the article. Thanks. PamD 19:02, 30 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The article Paolo Attivissimo has been proposed for deletion because it appears to have no references. Under Wikipedia policy, this newly created biography of a living person will be deleted unless it has at least one reference to a reliable source that directly supports material in the article.

If you created the article, please don't be offended. Instead, consider improving the article. For help on inserting references, see Referencing for beginners, or ask at the help desk. Once you have provided at least one reliable source, you may remove the {{prod blp}} tag. Please do not remove the tag unless the article is sourced. If you cannot provide such a source within ten days, the article may be deleted, but you can request that it be undeleted when you are ready to add one. Hello, GianoM. It has been over six months since you last edited your Articles for Creation draft article submission, "List of islands with 100% renewable energy sources".

In accordance with our policy that Articles for Creation is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been nominated for deletion. If you plan on working on it further, or editing it to address the issues raised if it was declined, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}} or {{db-g13}} code.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at this link. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

Thanks for your submission to Wikipedia, and happy editing. 1989 17:30, 22 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Plot descriptions cannot be copied from other sources, including official sources and IMDb, unless these can be verified to be public domain or licensed compatibly with Wikipedia. They must be written in original language to comply with Wikipedia's copyright policy. On Witchville.Diannaa (talk) 16:11, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, actually I've translated the German article, and the link provided doesn't work... So the German articles should be edited too?GianoM (talk) 16:15, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It probably originally came from IMDb, so yes, it should probably be removed from the German Wikipedia as well.
When copying or translating from a foreign-language Wikipedia, you have to give attribution so that our readers are made aware that you copied the prose rather than wrote it yourself. I've added the attribution for Amarsi un po' (film). Please make sure that you follow this licensing requirement when copying from compatibly-licensed material in the future. — Diannaa (talk) 13:45, 4 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I was also struck by you adding film plots at a rate of one-per-minute this morning, and saw that your plot for The Brave One (1956 film) (opening with a mistranslated "In the event of a storm") was a straight Google Translate of the equivalent German article. Posting automatic Google translations from elsewhere is a fair enough way to fill out an article, but you need to say that that's what you're doing, so that other editors know in what spirit to check it, and that the original authors get credit. Adding the {{Rough translation|1=German|2=Deutsch|3=section}} template to the top of the plot sections will also let other editors know that any grammatical or logical errors may be the fault of a computer translation and can be addressed by comparing it to the original. --Lord Belbury (talk) 08:01, 15 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

OK I will do that! GianoM (talk) 08:53, 15 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I've since been advised that machine translations are "worse than nothing", so perhaps this isn't worth your time at all in future. --Lord Belbury (talk) 15:57, 15 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
That's absurd but OK... GianoM (talk) 16:00, 15 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I'm not sure I see the reasoning either. I might raise it at Wikipedia talk:Translation. --Lord Belbury (talk) 16:05, 15 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
My point is that machine translation nowadays is instead excellent. I translated english->italian (my native language) and the incorrect translation are rare and negligible. My idea is "Better leave some typo to correct than leave an empty article". I think people take less time to correct that than to translate an entire article... GianoM (talk) 16:11, 15 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I agree, although I can see how it would be a bad look for Wikipedia if a lot of articles opened with the same "sorry, this is an auto-translation that hasn't been fixed yet" warning. I've started a discussion at Wikipedia_talk:Translation#Machine_translation_"worse_than_nothing", will see what people say. --Lord Belbury (talk) 16:20, 15 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
No, it's not absurd, since automatic translations are totally unreadable and far from "excellent". False friends, literal translations, sentence constructions that a native speaker would NEVER use... If you are a non-native speaker (as I am, just for knowing), it's better if you provide self-translated simple sentences, maybe with some little mistakes, rather than massively copy-paste fragmented wry texts like a bot.--Alienautic (talk) 16:32, 15 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
For example I've translated in italian what you just writed and it is very good. Movies plot are often written in easy sentences, totally unreadable is in my opinion a litte exaggerated. GianoM (talk) 16:43, 15 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
