AfD for Daniel Cameron (lawyer)
[edit]Nomination of Daniel Cameron (lawyer) for deletion
[edit]A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Daniel Cameron (lawyer) is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.
The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/AfD discussion title until a consensus is reached, and anyone, including you, is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.
Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article. Activist (talk) 22:53, 30 July 2019 (UTC)
- Winning a low turnout partisan primary does not convey notability. The sources in the article are essentially self-published by his employer or refer to Ballotpedia, an encyclopedia which itself sources back to the same original sources. There is nothing remotely resembling an RSS in either the article on Wikipedia or the Ballotpedia source. Being born in Hardin, KY, clerking for a judge, staffing for Mitch McConnell, playing football, does not convey notability or we'd have tens of thousands of articles about obscure benchwarmers. Activist (talk) 22:53, 30 July 2019 (UTC)
I respectfully disagree. Cameron was just endorsed by the President, which I was coming in to update, not may Americans can ay that for either party in their lifetime. With regards to Ballotpedia..they have their own independent verification process. You discontent winning the nomination of a major political party for a statewide office. The polling shows he is AHEAD in the race (see KY AG Race on Wiki) and could break the long streak of one party rule by the Democrats since 1948. Also the Wikipedia policy should at a minimum allow for a political nominee of either major party during the election cycle to be here if their opponent is here. Otherwise it gives an unfair advantage as many people search to initially learn about candidates on Wikipedia. At worst it is up for a few months...many on this cite have a short term outlook, this site will be around for years and needs a longer term focus in my opinion. Thank you. Gemofadeal (talk) 00:49, 31 July 2019 (UTC)
- Wikipedia has had a long-standing policy, with which I have long personally disagreed volubly, that mere winning of a primary does not convey notability. I lost those arguments to overwhelming consensus. I don't make the rules. If Cameron wins the election, an article about him will be warranted, but unless something remarkable happens to him between now and then, I expect it will be pretty thin gruel. I'll look at the election article on Wikipedia but this doesn't expect it will change anything. I don't know what's happening in KY, but the "D"s hugely outpolled the "R"s in the primaries. Their governor, Bevin, may have left a bad taste in the public's mouth, though there were even worse candidates on the "R" ticket, such as Dan Johnson (Kentucky politician) who was also elected in 2016. The Democratic gubernatorial and other statewide candidates polled about 150,000 more total votes than the Republicans in the contested primaries. Check the numbers, and this story: https://www.whas11.com/article/news/politics/bevin-holcomb-seats-could-switch-parties-in-the-upcoming-election-and-in-2020-says-national-journal/417-e52eb030-9469-4ee7-8899-a6a4e6c6fa90 So, following policy, no article unless Cameron wins, and if he doesn't perhaps no article ever unless something remarkable happens to him. Activist (talk) 11:16, 31 July 2019 (UTC)
Activist--Thank you for your comments and insight. Sounds like you are quite knowledgeable about KY politics, 2nd longest AG streak among Republicans and 2nd longest overall, only behind Mississippi, which has their primary next week and has a streak back to 1878 I believe. Is there a way to request policy changes as this seems silly -to delete or at least not say you have a conditional/probationary period during the election. Especially with a trend in politics of people running for office without government experience. The current governor of North Dakota was a successful businessman before being elected, but it appears under the standards here he would not have gotten a page in deep red North Dakota after the primary when barring a major upset ( which didn't happen) he won the primary and was going to win to be governor of a state. A consensus of those who participated perhaps....perhaps more people are needed to vote! not just ruled by the oligarchy at the top. Thank you for the input.Gemofadeal (talk) 20:46, 31 July 2019 (UTC)
- I do know a bit about KY politics and have slightly known a couple of officeholders. Mississipi may have a long streak, but Jim Hood is leaving office to run for Governor, so that streak might end shortly. Activist (talk) 10:28, 1 August 2019 (UTC)
Activist--just read Larry Sabato--he is predicting a GOP runoff, but then a GOP victory yet in general with Hood being a strong candidate. I have found other sites that discuss AG races, such as stateagelections.com which seems to be run by a lobbying law firm in DC.Gemofadeal (talk) 13:33, 1 August 2019 (UTC)
- There are indeed ways to get policy to change. Notability guidelines are not "ruled by the oligarchy at the top"; like most things on Wikipedia, they are formulated through consensus of participating editors. While not a perfect process, it does tend to reflect a large amount of editing experience. If you wish to see changes in this guideline, you can start a discussion at Wikipedia talk:Notability (people). --Nat Gertler (talk) 13:01, 1 August 2019 (UTC)

- Hello, and welcome. I can see that you've had a rough start to your editing career. Take a look at the upgrade I've done to the page you started, and pay particular attention to the kind of WP:RS reliable sources that I used. In general , it is best to stick to WP:SECONDARY sources, such as newspapers and magazines. You can read all about that in the links you will find in the Welcome template above. Cheers.E.M.Gregory (talk) 20:17, 31 July 2019 (UTC)
Thank you EM Gregory for the updates. They do provide some good sources and improve the page. What I have not liked about Wiki is the high handedness. We are right you are wrong, these are our rules even if they are dumb. I appreciate the respect and willingness to listen. THANK YOU!Gemofadeal (talk) 20:46, 31 July 2019 (UTC)
How do you link & then build campaign pages? For example, I have worked on the AG pages a lot and on the election for those pages. So in a South Dakota AG 2019 election how do I go for 2015 and 2023. Normally I have put [[ ]] and it builds a red page, but then you can build the page. Thank you in advance. Gemofadeal (talk) 02:38, 1 August 2019 (UTC)
- You wrote, regarding the sourcing of the Ravnsborg medals: {"We had a discussion of that early on, the picture of him in uniform is the source. It shows the medals earned and we looked them all up to verify.) So, who is "we?" A Wikipedia editor normally doesn't share a USER name with others, nor is it normally a collaborative effort. Did you get photos of thousands of medals and pick out those you saw on his chest, or did you get a list from him or his campaign and verify that? Just curious. How did you determine which were notable enough to be included? Thanks. "High handed," a.k.a. Activist (talk) 10:04, 1 August 2019 (UTC)
- I suspect that by "we" in the discussion he meant himself and me; you can see that discussion here, although my contribution was to express uncertainty that a photo could serve as a reference for this. However, I would not be part of "we" looking up the medals to verify. --Nat Gertler (talk) 12:53, 1 August 2019 (UTC)
Step one get the pic; step 2 look up the medals on his chest in the picture, step 3 verify with the AG office directlyGemofadeal (talk) 13:36, 1 August 2019 (UTC)
- If you go to edit the page on the 2019 election, you will find near the top, in the text for the infobox:
| previous_election = 2015 Kentucky elections#Attorney General | previous_year = 2015 | next_election = 2023 Kentucky Attorney General election | next_year = 2023 When someone created a page named with the name listed in next_election, 2023 Kentucky Attorney General election, the link in the infobox will automatically turn blue. No further change needs to be done to the 2019 election. If you are setting up a page for a new election, be sure to use Template:Infobox election to carry the information, and to fill in those fields appropriately. --Nat Gertler (talk) 13:17, 1 August 2019 (UTC) Mostly going to build pages for old elections--thank you for explanationGemofadeal (talk) 13:30, 1 August 2019 (UTC)

Image source problem with File:Kermit A. Sande, 24th Attorney General of South Dakota.jpg
[edit]Thank you for uploading File:Kermit A. Sande, 24th Attorney General of South Dakota.jpg.
This image is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such images would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a screenshot of a computer game or movie. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original image must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.
While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.
If you have uploaded other derivative works, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described in section F4 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 09:48, 5 January 2024 (UTC). If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. --TheImaCow (talk) 09:48, 5 January 2024 (UTC)
The file File:Parnell Donahue, 20th Attorney General of South Dakota.jpg has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
Derivative work. See the first version of the image.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.
Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Sreejith K (talk) 13:57, 6 May 2024 (UTC)
