Ghanaian people page protection

Thank you for protecting this page which has had like 5 anon vandalism edits. I figured I'd bring it to attention that the last 8 anon edits are all by IPs with the same 2 first sections. User:149.254.58.166 User:149.254.56.73 User:149.254.49.230 User:149.254.180.105 and User:149.254.58.174 all appear to be the same person[?]. Thanks! NDKilla 12:52, 6 December 2013 (UTC)

Almost certainly the same person. That's why protection is better than blocking in this case. GedUK  13:30, 6 December 2013 (UTC)

Vandalism on Hydrogen economy

Hello. I noticed you just blocked an IP for vandalism on that article, so I suggest you also look at 117.204.81.173 (talk · contribs · WHOIS), an IP that was given a level-4 warning for the exact same type of edits (blanking) on the exact same article just minutes before the IP you blocked appeared. With both IPs geolocating to Calicut, Kerala, India. Thomas.W talk to me 14:31, 6 December 2013 (UTC)

Yeah, I saw that. Don't think there's much point, they'd already hopped to the other one. GedUK  14:33, 6 December 2013 (UTC)

Template:Parent monthly clean up category

The request was semi, and you did templateeditor, saying "Protected Template:Parent monthly clean up category: per rfpp request". Would you mind making it semi after all. Debresser (talk) 14:11, 6 December 2013 (UTC)

 Done GedUK  14:17, 6 December 2013 (UTC)
Thank you. Debresser (talk) 15:47, 7 December 2013 (UTC)

Re: Speedy Deletion

If you say so. I figured it wouldn't be a problem as I used the exact same reasoning that similar pages were deleted under -- examples: here. here, here, and here. iMatthew / talk 17:50, 6 December 2013 (UTC)

Tag it for CSD again if you want, I won't review it. GedUK  12:08, 9 December 2013 (UTC)

Copyvio

Hi Ged. You deleted Braintax as a copyvio but the site is a copy of Wikipedia, not the other way round. Even if it was right, deleting a very old article via G12 isn't ideal as there would almost certainly be an older version that wasn't a copyvio. {{copyvio}} would be a better solution. Cheers SmartSE (talk) 14:10, 9 December 2013 (UTC)

Fair enough! I did consider whether it was a mirror, but couldn't see a sensible date on the other site, so I went safety first, which was overkill. Thanks for advice :) GedUK  15:38, 9 December 2013 (UTC)

United States at the 2011 Pan American Games

Hello. I saw that you moved the United States at the 2011 Pan American Games results to a details subpage and moved the medalists subpage to the main page. What was your rationale for this? I thought that the previous arrangement was an adequate compromise for the situation, at least temporarily, and this rearrangement just adds a level of confusion. I feel that there was really no consensus on the discussion of how to decrease the page size, and I don't necessarily agree with the splitting of the article into multiple subpages. Thanks. Prayerfortheworld (talk) 22:35, 10 December 2013 (UTC)

Ged. Thankyou for making the change. That is going the extra mile. Prayerfortheworld, Ged moved the page because I asked for it to be moved and I could not do it myself. Can we move the discussion back to United States at the 2011 Pan American Games if we need further discussion. Op47 (talk) 23:27, 10 December 2013 (UTC)

Bobby Dragas page

Hi Ged UK. Noticed you deleted my wikipedia page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bobby_Dragas. Please restore asap, I believe this issue had been sorted...Thanks Regards, BD — Preceding unsigned comment added by 110.143.151.215 (talk) 21:56, 9 December 2013 (UTC)

Please explain how it's been sorted. GedUK  12:11, 10 December 2013 (UTC)

Restored? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 138.130.152.113 (talk) 04:12, 12 December 2013 (UTC)

You said it's 'been sorted', I want to know what that means before I restore it. GedUK  12:02, 12 December 2013 (UTC)

Dear Ged UK: The above two articles are about the same topic. The first one has the preferred title, because the article is on of a series. The second, however, is much more complete. With the permission of the author, I moved the first article to a slightly different title and requested deletion of the redirect. The plan was to move the second article into the vacated spot. The smaller, less developed article could then be made into a redirect to the first one. However, you have moved the smaller article back again. I am not an admin, and can't do this directly; can you please fix this up? Please give the smaller article whatever title you think is most appropriate. Just reversing the two titles would be okay. There is no point in me trying again. Thanks. —Anne Delong (talk) 13:16, 13 December 2013 (UTC)

Ahh, I understand now. That's not what the tag said, it was 2011 Palanca Awards and 2011 Palanca awards (small A), not Palanca Awards 2011.
If you need to do something like this again, use Template:Db-move, and add the article titles, and it'll be a lot easier for the admin as the template provides the link. GedUK  13:44, 13 December 2013 (UTC)
Thanks, I'll do that. —Anne Delong (talk) 06:17, 14 December 2013 (UTC)

Requesting article protection

Forwarding message from: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template_talk:Edit_semi-protected

Hello,

I'm requesting protection for the article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel There have been too many edits on this article by unregistered users who vandalize and do not source their edits. Biblical articles have countless of edits just because they are biblical, and many people feel different about the information provided on Wikipedia. Please take this request into consideration for the sake of public information by blocking unregistered users from editing this important figure. — Thank you

Unfortunately, I find it complicated to request protection at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:RFPP, so I came to you since you're an Admin. — Jerm729 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 16:17, 16 December 2013 (UTC)

Pending-changes protected for a period of 3 months, after which the page will be automatically unprotected. I've put pending changes on, which means IPs can still edit, but their changes won't show up until it's approved by a trusted user. The edit rate is pretty low, so I think semi protection would be too much.
All you need to do to request protection at WP:RfPP is add {{la|<article name>}} to the top of the section. Anyway, happy to help. GedUK  12:05, 17 December 2013 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

Thank you!

Hi Ged UK. You were quite right to decline move protection. It had been redirected, but never moved, and I requested preemptive page protection. My mistake.

(One of the annoying things about being someone who is happy to admit to their mistakes is that that it makes you look like someone who makes lots of mistakes, when you probably make no less or no more mistakes than someone who will furiously deny that they make mistakes.)

Thanks again - Pete AU aka --Shirt58 (talk) 09:39, 11 December 2013 (UTC)

No worries, it's easily done. Page moves, reverts with redirects thrown often confuse me, that's why I wasn't sure if I made a mistake or you did! : )GedUK  12:08, 11 December 2013 (UTC)
Oh, @Shirt58: I just realised you gave me my favourite barnstar ever! GedUK  09:08, 18 December 2013 (UTC)

VisualEditor newsletter • 19 December 2013

Since the last newsletter, the VisualEditor team has worked on some toolbar improvements, fixing bugs, and improving support for Indic languages as well as other languages with complex characters. The current focus is on improving the reference dialog and expanding the new character inserter tool.

There have been dozens of changes since the last newsletter. Here are some of the highlights:

  • Rich copying and pasting is now available. If you copy text from another website, then character formatting and some other HTML attributes are preserved. This means, for example, that if you copy a pre-formatted suggested citation from a source like this, then VisualEditor will preserve the formatting of the title in the citation. Keep in mind that copying the formatting may include formatting that you don't want (like section headings). If you want to paste plain, unformatted text onto a page, then use Control+⇧ Shift+V or ⌘ Command+⇧ Shift+V (Mac).
  • Auto-numbered external links like [1] can now be edited just like any other link. However, they cannot be created in VisualEditor easily.
  • Several changes to the toolbar and dialogs have been made, and more are on the way. The toolbar has been simplified with a new drop-down text styles menu and an "insert" menu. Your feedback on the toolbar is wanted here. The transclusion/template dialog has been simplified. If you have enabled mathematical formula editing, then the menu item is now called the formula editor instead of LaTeX.
  • There is a new character inserter, which you can find in the new "insert" menu, with a capital Omega ("Ω"). It's a very basic set of characters. Your feedback on the character inserter is wanted here.
  • Saving the page should seem faster by several seconds now.
  • It is now possible to access VisualEditor by manually editing the URL, even if you are not logged in or have not opted in to VisualEditor normally.  To do so, append ?veaction=edit to the end of the page name.  For example, change https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random?veaction=edit to open a random page in VisualEditor.  This is intended to support bug testing across multiple browsers, without requiring editors to login repeatedly.

Looking ahead: The transclusion dialog will see further changes in the coming weeks, with a simple mode for single templates and an advanced mode for more complex transclusions. The new character formatting menu on the toolbar will get an arrow to show that it is a drop-down menu. The reference dialog will be improved, and the Reference item will become a button in the main toolbar, rather than an item in the Insert menu.

If you have questions or suggestions for future improvements, or if you encounter problems, please let everyone know by posting a note at Wikipedia:VisualEditor/Feedback. Thank you! Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 20:43, 19 December 2013 (UTC)
