Dr. Shroff Charity Eye Hospital

[edit]

Dr. Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital is one of the best specialty eye hospitals in North India, with highly accomplished and internationally recognized team of doctors, state of the art facilities and updated technology. This Hospital has seen turn of the century and millennium, a legacy being carried forward since 1914. Padam Shri Dr Sorabji P Shroff, a Fellow of Royal College of Surgeons, UK, had a vision to establish an eye hospital that provided quality eye care services to everyone, especially those who were economically weak. And, from a one-room set-up, the seeds were sown for establishing first eye hospital in North India, from Lahore (now in Pakistan) to Kanpur (then known as Cawnpore). With sustained representations, in 1924, the British Administration made land available in Daryaganj, Delhi. The hospital building was completed in 1927 and inaugurated on March 23rd by Lady Irwin, Vicerene of India.

Mission of the Hospital is ‘to make a lasting impact on the eradication of blindness and deafness in India by providing quality care to all sections of the society’, and its vision is ‘to be the best tertiary eye care and ENT care institution in North India providing quality services to all economic sections of the society.’ Its main focus areas are comprehensive care for Eye and ENT, quality consciousness, knowledge transfer, community impact, research, publication, training, and transparency.

As a mandate, 50% of the surgeries are done free of cost or at highly subsidized rates. It is a partner under Ayushmaan Bharat scheme of Govt of India for providing free treatments to poor patients. Besides this, the institution has received financial grant from international and organizations such as Combat Blindness International, Orbis, Lavelle Foundation, Standard Chartered Bank, CBM, to name a few. Eicher Group has been one of the major supporters since 1996. Support from the Group has helped the hospital build its credibility, develop state of the art facility and continue to provide highest quality services and care to all. Relationship with the Group has been more of an institutional one, than that of a donor-partner. Organizations like Orbis International, Combat Blindness International, Standard Chartered, to name a few, had reposed their trust in the team of committed doctors to start new initiatives and expand the horizons across eye and ENT care. Overwhelming support from individuals, philanthropists has helped the Institution to start and establish secondary centers in Uttar Pradesh especially.

The hospital has grown from strength to strength, achieved many milestones, established itself as one of the best eye hospitals in North India, treating everyone with equal care. Institutions from around the globe have visited SCEH to share their insights and recognized it for efficiency and effectiveness in teaching as well as practice.

Dr. Shroff Charity Eye Hospital Journey

[edit]

In 1962, SCEH was selected as a leading eye hospital at the International Conference of Ophthalmology held in Delhi, in which well-known specialists from Europe and United States of America participated. Fifty years later, in 2012, SCEH was the first Eye and ENT Hospital in North India to received accreditation by NABH (National Accreditation Board of Hospitals). Today, the Hospital is considered as one of the best super specialty eye care institutions in North India with an unwavering commitment to providing quality eye care services to all economic sections of the society.

More than 2 million patients benefit from various services, through an internationally accepted hub & spoke model for delivery of quality Eye and ENT care, the hub being the tertiary care hospital, and spokes as 4 secondary centers, 2 specialty clinics in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan & Uttarakhand; and 36 Vision Centers spread in these states. Tertiary Care Hospital – Darya Ganj, Delhi; Secondary Centres – Alwar, Vrindavan, Saharanpur, Mohammadi; Speciality Clinics – Karol Bagh, Delhi and Meerut. In addition to this, the Hospital is also managing an eye hospital in Ranikhet, Uttarakhand. All Centres are equipped to provide services for quality Eye and ENT care under one roof i.e. diagnostic, medical, surgical and rehabilitative (hope for those whom surgery can’t help).

Through the vision centers as well as the traditional camp- based model, the hospital seeks to identify and mobilize the movement of those in need of eye surgery from various project areas.

The hospital has made progress in its five focus areas: (1) development of tertiary capabilities in chosen specialties; (2) developing training capabilities in ophthalmic and non-ophthalmic programmers; (3) increasing the depth and the reach of community eye-care initiative; (4) basic research; and (5) low- vision rehabilitation and enhancement.
