Blocked

On January 6th 2006 the static IP address used by the institution I attend and mainly edit Wikipedia with was blocked. This IP address is the IP of a proxy server used by the institution for security reasons. Other users at the institution seem to have used the IP rather than create an account and have vandalized Wikipedia :-(. So untill the proxy's IP is unblocked, I can't edit. --Gary Kirk (talk) 14:51, 6 January 2006 (UTC)

We need to know the IP# or username of the vandal that caused your autoblock to undo it, also the name of the admin who did the block would help too. — FREAK OF NURxTURE (TALK) 14:57, Jan. 6, 2006
IP is 193.112.229.153 and I was blocked by BorgQueen
Ok try editing now. — FREAK OF NURxTURE (TALK) 15:05, Jan. 6, 2006
Thanks :-) --Gary Kirk (talk) 15:11, 6 January 2006 (UTC)

No problem. Apparently some guy named Chris was responsible ([1], [2]). You should write an message on the user page and user talk page for that IP, so maybe they'll stick to shorter blocks when vandalism occurs. — FREAK OF NURxTURE (TALK) 15:17, Jan. 6, 2006

Put {{SharedIP|name of the institution}} at the top of User talk:193.112.229.153. — FREAK OF NURxTURE (TALK) 15:30, Jan. 6, 2006
Hi Gary, I just read your email. I am glad the problem has already been solved. --BorgQueen 18:37, 6 January 2006 (UTC)

Tony Banks - life peers and the title "Baron"

I notice you've moved Tony Banks's page from Baron Stratford to Lord Stratford several times now. I know it seems strange, but the convention on Wikipedia is to list life peers under the title Baron, even though they are usually know as "Lord X". Check out the page of any other peer, e.g. Sebastian Coe, Baron Coe or Lord Falconer of Thoroton (which redirects). --JRawle 17:03, 11 January 2006 (UTC)

The peerage has five ranks; in descending order: duke, marquess, earl, viscount and baron. All except duke are addressed (in speaking, etc.) as "Lord". The middle three are referred to formally as "Viscount X", "Earl of Y", etc. For barons, however, they are always referred to just as "Lord X" rather than Baron. The only exception is when they are first "introduced" in the House of Lords, and on other very formal documents such as the New Year's Honours list. See the articles on Lord and Peerage for more info.
All life peers are created at the lowest rank of baron.
The same conventions are traditionally true for women (as peers in their own right, or as peers' wives). However, female life peers tend to prefer to be referred to as "Baroness X", probably to distinguish themselves from the wife of a peer (who would normally be called Lady X, although in fact being a baroness).
You can see the Hansard entry to Tony's introduction here [3]. The part where it says, "for life" seems rather poignant now. --JRawle 21:10, 11 January 2006 (UTC)

It's only the title of the article, and the first line that gives his name, that should read "Baron". Throughout the article, he should be referred to in the usual way, i.e. Lord Stratford. I suppose the disambiguation page could be either (I'd prefer Lord), but the link needs to be to the "Baron" page, obviously! --JRawle 23:35, 11 January 2006 (UTC)
Incidentally, the same thing would apply to peers of other ranks. The title and the first line should be "Viscount X", while the rest of the article refers to "Lord X".
Just incase there be any confusion Scottish Peerages (ie those titles before the Act of Union) weren't created and don't use Baron/Baroness in any form. They are always Lord/Lady (title) so it's important to check datesAlci12 18:29, 31 March 2006 (UTC)

Blocked (again)

On January 12th 2006 the static IP address used by the institution I attend and mainly edit Wikipedia with was blocked. This IP address is the IP of a proxy server used by the institution for security reasons. Other users at the institution seem to have used the IP rather than create an account and have vandalized Wikipedia :-(. So untill the proxy's IP is unblocked, I can't edit. IP address is IP is 193.112.229.153 and I was blocked by Bhadani. --Gary Kirk (talk) 10:40, 12 January 2006 (UTC)

The block has now expired. I didn't notice it was only for an hour. Oops. --Gary Kirk (talk) 10:52, 12 January 2006 (UTC)
Dear Gary, actually I had blocked it only for one hour as I was aware of the issues. I regret the inconvenience to you, and other users, and thank you for your concern by sending me an e-mail. --Bhadani 11:03, 12 January 2006 (UTC)

Ravenclaw template

Regarding the template Template: user ravenclaw, I believe it is better to use the image of the raven. If you wish for the images to be consistent, then the appropriate action should be to add an image of a lion to Gryffindor, a badger to Hufflepuff, and a snake of some kind to Slytherin. Do you object to this project? Niffweed17 21:02, 13 January 2006 (UTC)

Speedy deletion

Hi Garykirk. I noticed you had applied a speedy-delete tag to a couple of articles that don't seem to me to meet the criteria for speedy deletion. Notability is only a criteria for speedy deletion if the article is about a person or group of people, such as a band or club. It doesn't apply to cemetaries and the like. You could, of course, nominate it for AFD instead. Hope this helps! —Cleared as filed. 16:57, 16 January 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, on that note you might want to be more careful about applying the tag to a normal article that had been vandalized to the point of unrecognizability (e.g. Scott Keith). The vandalism was "nonsense" and an "attack page" but a few edits earlier it was OK. I highly recommend grabbing the "popups" tool as it makes RC Patrol a lot easier (plus it's fun to use). --Do Not Talk About Feitclub (contributions) 13:05, 27 February 2006 (UTC)

Any images you upload need to be tagged with a Image copyright tag, and must allow reproduction, modification and use on other commercial sites. --Admrb♉ltz (T | C) 00:37, 23 January 2006 (UTC)

Blocked

--Gary Kirk (talk) 10:22, 31 January 2006 (UTC)

Hi, Gary. I received your e-mail and would have unblocked you but by the time I read the e-mail, the block had already expired. Sorry that block of the anon caught you too — I'll keep that in mind the next time I see vandalism by that IP address. Sorry again. —Cleared as filed. 13:35, 31 January 2006 (UTC)

Archiving my talk page

Just a reminder that I need to read WP:ARCHIVE. --Gary Kirk (talk) 20:47, 12 February 2006 (UTC)

My RfA

Thank you!
Thank you!
Hi Gary Kirk/Archive 2. On behalf of my right eye, I'd like to thank you for giving me your support on my recent RfA. It ended with a final tally of (73/2/2) and therefore I have been installed as an administrator now, and I'm ready to serve Wikipedians all over the world with my newly acquired mop and bucket. If you have any questions, do not hestitate to forward them to my talkpage. Once again, thanks for your support. SoothingR 20:15, 18 February 2006 (UTC)

Amusement Wiki

Am removing the tag. But still don't find it notable enough for it's own article. - Aksi great 18:25, 25 February 2006 (UTC)

OK. Have put it for AfD. Give your reason here - Aksi great 18:38, 25 February 2006 (UTC)

Apologies. When I reverted a broken link, the Fall/Autumn change went with it, and I missed it. RadioKirk talk to me 05:21, 3 March 2006 (UTC)

Request for edit summary

Hi. I am a bot, and I am writing to you with a request. I would like to ask you, if possible, to use edit summaries a bit more often when you contribute. The reason an edit summary is important is because it allows your fellow contributors to understand what you changed; you can think of it as the "Subject:" line in an email. For your information, your current edit summary usage is 49% for major edits and 65% for minor edits. (Based on the last 150 major and 94 minor edits in the article namespace.)

This is just a suggestion, and I hope that I did not appear impolite. You do not need to reply to this message, but if you would like to give me feedback, you can do so at the feedback page. Thank you, and happy edits, Mathbot 10:30, 3 March 2006 (UTC)

Re: phpBB and Amusement Wiki

Hey again Edderius!
*For a phpBB forum I'd reccomend ForumForFree. I have an IPB and phpBB forum hosted for free, with ads, by them. You could easily set up a subdomain on your site - forum.eddiesegoura.com and have it redirect to the phpBB forum. That would take all the bandwidth and server space costs out of the equation! *For a free MediaWiki installation, try EditThis.Info. It uses the same engine, MediaWiki, as Wikipedia and all its sister projects. For a fantastic example of a non-Wikimedia Foundation wiki, take a look at The Amusement Wiki. Your contributions there would also be much appreciated!
Hope this helps you!--Gary Kirk (talk) 21:59, 4 March 2006 (UTC)

It's great, thanks a lot. It's like an admin's sandbox because now I can practice and experiment with the tools before I work on the real thing! -- Eddie, Sunday March 5 2006 at 05:50

Victormong

Thanks. I'd forgotten about him as I really thought he would not do it again. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 13:28, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

Housekeeping advice

Taken, thanks. I have my prefs set to "This is a minor edit", and don't usually think of my edits as major, so rarely change it. Bill 13:46, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

Metus

Metus is a real band and was not an experiment, we where a little short of info because we where working at school and not at home, please put this article back up and we will edit it later on tonight —Preceding unsigned comment added by JJPoolie (talkcontribs)

SuggestBot picks articles in a number of ways, from comparing articles that need work to other articles you've edited, to choosing articles randomly (ensuring that all articles with cleanup tags get a chance to be cleaned up). It tries to recommend only articles that other Wikipedians have marked as needing work. Your contributions make Wikipedia better -- thanks for helping.

If you have feedback on how to make SuggestBot better, please tell me on SuggestBot's talk page. Thanks from ForteTuba, SuggestBot's caretaker.

P.S. You received these suggestions because your name was listed on the SuggestBot request page. If this was in error, sorry about the confusion. -- SuggestBot 04:05, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
