I'm uncomfortable with some of the editorializing in the list of links at the bottom - particularly the Guardian one - and am not sure The Register is something we should be linking to without a lot of commentary, as it's an exceptionally extreme source, while, at the same time, not being amazingly notable. - Hi @Adam Cuerden: - This was a work in progress, the links at the bottom were just for my convenience, and weren't intended to be part of the final piece; though the critical line taken by Orlowski at the Register probably should be at least mentioned.
- The piece was intended to go in the "News & Notes" section of the Signpost last week. I probably should have run it as it was, finishing with the quote from Oettinger; that's the state it was at when the time just got too late on Friday night. But I'd intended to mention the reaction to the report as a whole, and a couple of the media pieces. So rather than my just filing what I had, instead it wasn't in a ready state, so the Signpost went without me, and it got moved here. More here.
- Since then I've been mostly trying to get some other projects back up to speed, that had got passed over in the last few weeks. I probably ought to try to get this piece into some sort of shape to run this week, but I can't say I have a lot of appetite for it. Jheald (talk) 14:13, 14 July 2015 (UTC)
- I could certainly see mentioning the Register articles, but not uncommented. He is, after all, calling for Wikipedia to start licensing images left and right. With nearly five million articles - and that on en-wiki alone - who would even get to decide which of the pittance we could afford to license for (licensing is not cheap) would get to have a licensed image? It also fails to understand some basic things like "fair use exists". Adam Cuerden (talk) 14:41, 14 July 2015 (UTC)
- If I'd known that's what you wanted I would have attempted to finish it myself, but we are conscious of the fact that sometimes Signpost volunteers are very protective of the pieces they write under their own names and do not want them altered drastically or completed in a way they did not envision. - @Jheald: Please let me know before Thursday evening EST if you decide not to finish it. If not I will try to incorporate some of it into ITM. Thank you. Gamaliel (talk) 14:08, 15 July 2015 (UTC)
