License tagging for Image:14 Herculis.gif
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:14 Herculis.gif. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.
For more information on using images, see the following pages:
This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 02:05, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:BX Chicken Fries.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:BX Chicken Fries.jpg. The image description page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Do not use SEDS as a reference
[edit]Do not use the SEDS website as a reference. Much of the material on the website is either poorly referenced or out-of-date, and much of it is horribly inaccurate. If you would like me to direct you to better astronomy references, please let me know.
Thank you, Dr. Submillimeter 08:06, 29 June 2007 (UTC)
Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Image:Worldmap.gif, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Image:Worldmap.gif fits the criteria for speedy deletion for the following reason:
To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Image:Worldmap.gif, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Please note that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it did not nominate Image:Worldmap.gif itself. Feel free to leave a message on the bot operator's talk page if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot. --Android Mouse Bot 2 12:22, 29 June 2007 (UTC)
Astronomy references
[edit]For scientific papers on astronomy topics, I suggest using the ABS Abstract Service at http://adsabs.harvard.edu/abstract_service.html . This allows users to search through the abstracts from many scientific astronomy journals, including all of the prominent journals in the field. Articles from the journals themselves printed before 1996 are freely accessible, but newer articles may not be accessible unless you are at a university or research institution. However, preprint forms of the articles can usually be accessed from ArXiv website links that are also provided in the search results.
For data, I suggest using the NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database (NED; http://nedwww.ipac.caltech.edu/) for things outside the Milky Way and the SIMBAD Astronomical Database (http://simbad.u-strasbg.fr/simbad/) for things inside the galaxy. However, not all of the data from these websites is useful. For example, the active galactic nuclei types given by NED are often inaccurate, and the distances given by NED are only calculated estimates that may not be accurate.
To see an example of how these references can be used in Wikipedia articles, look at Sombrero Galaxy.
Let me know if you would like more information. Dr. Submillimeter 13:19, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

Non-free content
[edit]Hi, I removed the screenshot from your userpage, and the Star Wars logo from the stub template.
Please check out Wikipedia:Non-free content. Wikipedia is a free content ensyclopedia so non-free material is only allowed as exceptions per a narrow set of criteria when they are nessesary to make articles more informative. Outside of articles (such as userpages or templates) they do not have the beneficial effect of improving the understanding of our content and so they are not permited there. Thanks for understanding. --Sherool (talk) 21:05, 30 June 2007 (UTC)
- Well it has to do with the non-free content policy. These sort of images can only be used if they meet all the listed criteria for eact spesific article, and have a rationale explaining how. So even if the image qualify for use in at least one article it doesn't automaticaly follow that it can then be used freely elsewhere on the site. It has to meet all the criteria every time it's used, and one of the criteria is that it can only be used in main namespace articles (some wiggle room can be given to things like a temporary draft of a new article beeing actively worked on as a user subpage though). --Sherool (talk) 10:53, 1 July 2007 (UTC)
Non-free use disputed for Image:Bosconian 1.jpg
[edit]This file may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading Image:Bosconian 1.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our Criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 04:54, 1 July 2007 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free image (Image:Bob the Builder.jpg)
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Bob the Builder.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 02:02, 4 July 2007 (UTC)
