[edit]
Your account has been indefinitely blocked from editing because your account has been used for advertising or promotion, which is contrary to the purpose of Wikipedia. Also, your username indicates that the account represents a business, organisation, group, or web site, which is against the username policy.

If you intend to make useful contributions instead of promoting your business or organization, you may request unblock and a username change. In your reasons, you must:

  • Disclose any compensation you may receive for your contributions in accordance with the paid-contribution disclosure requirement.
  • Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the kind of edits for which you were blocked.
  • Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked.
  • Provide a new username.

To do this, post the text {{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}} at the bottom of your talk page. Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with your new username and replace the text "Your reason here" with your reasons to be unblocked.

Please note that the new username you choose cannot already be taken and in use by another account. You can go here to search and see if the username you'd like to choose is available. If the search returns that no global account with that username exists, that means it is available to be taken.

Appeals: If, after reviewing the guide to appealing blocks, you believe this block was made in error, you may appeal it by adding the text {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}} at the bottom of your talk page. Replace the text "Your reason here" with the reasons you believe the block was an error, and publish the page. Lourdes 07:38, 4 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Request reason:

GakugeiU | This account is created to allow students in one class at this university to practice using Wikipedia. It seemed more honest to use a name associated with the university rather than something unrelated. We do not have any advertising or promotion purpose, nor do we intend to edit any pages using this username, except the User page and its sandboxes. Please note that we have only updated the User page. We are practicing with content from the university. This is really useful so that we can think about differences between personal interest and general interest. If asked, we can practice using different content, such as a biography of a celebrity, if this is preferable. However, I would emphasise that all of our activities have been for practice purposes on our userpage, used as a sandbox. There have been no edits to Wikipedia pages.

Decline reason:

This is not acceptable. Wikipedia accounts are for the use of one person only. --jpgordon𝄢𝄆𝄐𝄇 05:19, 11 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

This user's request to be unblocked to request a change in username has been reviewed by an administrator, who declined the request. Requested username:

Request reason:

This is the second request to unblock this account. It was created for a class to learn how to edit Wikipedia. I was using a Wikipedia guide to learning Wiki editing at university. However, we did not realise that an account cannot be shared amongst class members. We now understand the guidance that requires one account per user. From now on, only I will use this account from now on and other members of the class will create new accounts. From here, we will follow our original plan using separate accounts. We will practice with general content in sandboxes for some weeks. Then, any edits made to Wikipedia will be to articles/topics with which we have no vested interest. Our primary aim remains to learn how to use Wikipedia. If the username needs to be changed, I suggest JamesJimJones123. If this is not available, perhaps the number could be changed until an available permeation appears. Thank you for your consideration. Decline reason:

It says "decline" only because I am not outright removing the block. I am, however, altering the block to permit you(and others) to create individual accounts yourselves. I highly advise you and your students to identify yourselves as university students/staff before beginning the process of learning about Wikipedia. Good luck. 331dot (talk) 09:18, 19 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. This account has the name of an organisation, so can be deleted. We will continue with new accounts from here. GakugeiU (talk) 23:58, 24 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It's not possible to delete accounts; you need only never return to this one. 331dot (talk) 00:10, 25 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Lourdes I'm thinking that this block should be softened to allow the person making this request and students to create an account themselves. They should also identify themselves as university students/staff learning about Wikipedia. What do you think? 331dot (talk) 08:53, 19 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Of course 331dot. Thank you for looking at this. As I mentioned earlier, if you're looking at revising any of my blocks, please don't even wait to ask me. Your view is respected and accepted without any issue by me (I follow your discussions across). Thank you, and please go ahead, Lourdes 09:12, 19 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on your user page, User:GakugeiU, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be advertising which only promotes or publicises someone or something. Promotional editing of any kind is not permitted, whether it be promotion of a person, company, product, group, service, belief, or anything else. This is a violation of our policies regarding acceptable use of user pages — user pages are intended for active editors of Wikipedia to communicate with one another as part of the process of creating encyclopedic content, and should not be mistaken for free webhosting resources or advertising space. Please read the guidelines on spam, the guidelines on user pages, and, especially, our FAQ for Organizations.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. Education assignment

[edit]

Hi! If you are doing an education assignment I recommend using these training modules. They're in English, but feel free to translate them! They're part of the Wiki Education Foundation's trainings on editing Wikipedia - they only work with classes in North America, but they are absolutely fine with people from other countries using them! There is more information about this here. You can also ask for help at Wikipedia:Education noticeboard - there may be someone there who can help you.

Other than that, my recommendation here is that you look at translating pages from the Japanese Wikipedia into English or vice-versa. For example, there are over 6 million pages in the English Wikipedia, but less than 2 million on the Japanese version. Even pages on major institutions such as Harvard need work, as the page is less than half the size of its English counterpart. Translating the English page into Japanese could be an excellent opportunity to practice both English and Wikipedia editing.

I'm not on Wikipedia as much as I once was, but definitely feel free to reach out with any questions! ReaderofthePack(formerly Tokyogirl79) (。◕‿◕。) 14:57, 17 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • I also wanted to give a note about Wikipedia's neutral point of view policies (WP:NPOV). This is something that can be difficult to get used to on here, as the style can be so dramatically different than everyday writing styles. For example, many of us speak with a persuasive style without realizing it. There's nothing wrong with this in everyday talk, as it's part of our normal speech patterns, but it's not really appropriate for Wikipedia. The same thing goes for words that can seem normal, but can imply that you're partial to the topic.
Another example would be the statement "Watermelon is a delicious summer treat". This is written like it's a universal value, that everyone - or nearly everyone - agrees with the statement. Something like this would need to be rewritten to become more neutral or be attributed to a specific person. The article has a better way of phrasing this that states that it's popular during the summer while not making any claims about its taste: "Watermelon is a sweet, commonly consumed fruit of summer".
Again, this is something that can take a while to get used to - I certainly had some trouble with this when I first began editing! This is why translating may be an easier route here, as the articles are more likely to be written with a neutral point of view. It's not a guarantee since anyone can edit and not all articles are checked right away, but it does make it more likely. To be honest, article translation is also something that is highly in demand as a whole, as there are so many articles to translate and not many people who can or will do it. Some of us try our best with Google Translate, but translation from someone familiar with both languages usually results in a better translation. Thank you for your understanding. For a beginner user, this would be really great advice. Unfortunately, we are currently tangled in the system and need to escape before starting from scratch. We decided to work on our university page (in a sandbox) to learn to understand differences in style and perspective. That is, it is more difficult to write neutrally on something we are familiar with. Now (a) I cannot edit the user page, which currently has content on our university, so every admin who look think that it is advertising. (b) the block has blocked the IP of the entire university from creating new accounts. We are current literally unable to comply with the rules. We need the IP for the university to be unblocked. Then we can create accounts, and continue. At this point, the resources you recommend will be immensely useful. Thank you.
If there is anything you can do to lift the IP block on the university's IP range, please please do so. We feel guilty that our small class has brought this upon the entire student population.
I am sure that Wikipedia has potential as a tool for learning. However, the system has proven quite unrelenting to those who infringe. From my perspective, we have been open about our purposes, to the extent that anybody reading the unblock requests would understand the mistake quite easily. Yet, no solution has been forthcoming. We are still unable to follow the rules.
Again, I will return to your thoughtful post once the class is able to resume. GakugeiU (talk) 00:03, 18 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
