Recent changes
- Twinkle is a gadget on English Wikipedia. It can help with maintenance and patrolling. It can now be used on other wikis. You can get Twinkle on your wiki using the twinkle-starter GitHub repository.
Problems
- The content translation tool did not work for many articles for a little while. This was because of a bug. [1]
- Some things will not work for about a minute on 5 May. This will happen around 06:00 UTC. This will affect the content translation tool and notifications among other things. This is because of an upgrade to avoid crashes. [2]
Changes later this week
- Reference Previews will become a default feature on a number of wikis on 5 May. This is later than planned because of some changes. You can use it without using Page Previews if you want to. The earlier plan was to have the preference to use both or none. [3][4]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 4 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 5 May. It will be on all wikis from 6 May (calendar).
Future changes
- The CSS classes
.error
,.warning
and.success
do not work for mobile readers if they have not been specifically defined on your wiki. From June they will not work for desktop readers. This can affect gadgets and templates. The classes can be defined in MediaWiki:Common.css or template styles instead. [5]

To spread the goodness of cookies, you can add {{subst:Cookie}} to someone's talk page with a friendly message, or eat this cookie on the giver's talk page with {{subst:munch}}!
- @MelecieDiancie: Awe, thanks! I really appreciate it. Thanks for fighting alongside me. I should really be heading to bed soon, so hopefully you'll get a chance to beat me then. :) Gaelan 💬✏️ 08:07, 5 May 2021 (UTC)

May 2021
Please wait until this user has vandalised enough and slowly give them warnings until they have reached level 4 or 4im[
- @Hockeycatcat: I usually do all 4, but I thought that their second round of edits was clear-cut and bad enough to qualify for an immediate 4. I didn’t use 4im, because that template’s wording (“only warning”) doesn’t make sense when it is in fact their second warning. Not quite sure what I should have done here—are you saying the vandalism didn’t qualify for the jump in level, or that I should have used the 4imm template despite already having warned them? (P.S. I’m replying through the iOS app, which I haven’t done before; sorry if the formatting gets butchered.) Gaelan 💬✏️ 05:38, 12 May 2021 (UTC) Gaelan 💬✏️ 05:38, 12 May 2021 (UTC)
Hi Gaelan, I actaully see what you were doing, you warned the user after they had vandalised a lot in a short period of time, so I will remove the warning. I'm sorry for not looking into it further. Hockeycatcat (talk) 05:48, 12 May 2021 (UTC)
Tower Hotel
Hi Gaelan, Thanks for your welcome, l am new to Wikipedia that's true, so don't know all the rules yet - my first post - l do work for that's true but it did not ask me that question when l edited, so was not hiding that fact - new guy error. l only put facts in regarding the ownership and rooms and who operates the coffee shops, some of the extra wording on iconic views is true but that could be bias based. So l have updated with limited wording. I have personally donated to wiki and hope to start my personal journey with other edits and more active role, l just started with the Tower as it was so out of date including misleading information on the ownership. I hope my new edits are acceptable thank you PDCSkybridge ( this is just my user name not a company) — Preceding unsigned comment added by PDCSkybridge (talk • contribs) 10:51, 13 May 2021 (UTC)
- @PDCSkybridge: Hey, thanks for following up! I don't blame you at all - it's entirely natural to start editing with something you're familiar with. Welcome, and I hope you enjoy your time here - I'm happy to help if I have any other questions; the teahouse also has many people happy to help. Gaelan 💬✏️ 22:28, 13 May 2021 (UTC)

Recent changes
- There is a new toolbar in the Reply tool. It works in the wikitext source mode. You can enable it in your preferences. [6] [7] [8]
- Wikimedia mailing lists are being moved to Mailman 3. This is a newer version. For the character encoding to work it will change from
UTF-8
toutf8mb3
. [9][10] - An earlier issue of Tech News said that the citoid API would handle dates with a month but no days in a new way. This has been reverted for now. There needs to be more discussion of how it affects different wikis first. [11]
Changes later this week
-
MediaWiki:Pageimages-blacklist
will be renamedMediaWiki:Pageimages-denylist
. The list can be copied to the new name. It will happen on 19 May for some wikis and 20 May for some wikis. Most wikis don't use it. It lists images that should never be used as thumbnails for articles. [12] - The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 18 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 19 May. It will be on all wikis from 20 May (calendar).

Recent changes
- The Wikimedia movement has been using IRC on a network called Freenode. There have been changes around who is in control of the network. The Wikimedia IRC Group Contacts have decided to move to the new Libera Chat network instead. This is not a formal decision for the movement to move all channels but most Wikimedia IRC channels will probably leave Freenode. There is a migration guide and ongoing Wikimedia discussions about this.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 25 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 26 May. It will be on all wikis from 27 May (calendar).
