Thanks for uploading File:Gary M. Burge, November 2013.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or

A tag has been placed on File:Gary M. Burge, November 2013.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. Hi GMB. Thank you for your post on my talk page. The good news is that you seem to have a basic idea on how to write a Wikipedia Biography, a not so common thing to understand for new users. The problem with the Gary M. Burge article is that only one of the seven sources in the article are independent of Gary M. Burge. Gary is the author of source 2, 3, 6, and 7, so those are not independent of Gary. Gary works for source 1 and 4, so those are not independent of Gary. You need to remove the information in the Gary M. Burge article that is sourced to sources 1-4 and 6-7. As for source 5, by Amstutz, you did not summarize what Amstutz wrote about Gary's life or Gary's written thoughts. There are six places in the Amstutz book where Amstutz mentions Burge. There are chronological beliefs/events in Gary's life set out in the Amstutz book that are fair game for the Gary M. Burge Wikipedia article, none of which appears to be in the Gary M. Burge Wikipedia article. For example, "In 2004 (or the correct date), Burge believed that a purpose of the Mosaic covenant, a biblical covenant between God and the biblical Israelites, was to make it clear to the Israelites what faith-obedience was needed to participates in the benefits of the promises to Abraham." That can be sourced to the Amstutz book. Think about it this way: the Amstutz book is an independent, reliable source. Amstutz knows much of Gary's work/life events, but made decisions to only include some of it in Amstutz's book. The work/life event selection by Amstutz about Gary M. Burge is the nuggets Wikipedia is after. Wikipedia is not interested in what Gary M. Burge thinks of himself or what Wikipedian editors think of Gary M. Burge. Instead, Wikipedia wants to capture the editorial decisions of independent, reliable source about a topic. Once you mined the Amstutz book for information about Burge, then you move on to the chronologically next independent, reliable source about Burge and mine that for information about Burge. Place all that independent, reliable source information in chronological order in a Wikipedia article, and you will have created a perspective of Burge that appears no where else - a representative survey of the relevant literature. -- Jreferee (talk) 11:57, 26 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

(Reply to your post). You came to learn more about how Wikipedia operates and you have! From the outside, Wikipedia looks like people merely write things and post them. However, it takes at least three months of participation in Wikipedia to 'get it'. Some of the big ones - No Wikipedian opinions/view (e.g., WP:Original Research) in articles, don't use anything source connected with the subject in the Wikipedia article - are completely opposite of what people think when they think writing. Isn't the best source of information about a person the person themselves? Everywhere else, yes; in Wikipedia, no (it's the worst! well, almost the worst). Also, you are allowed to write about yourself, you generally just can't make those post in Main/Article space (Wikipedia is divided into "namespaces" - see Wikipedia:Namespace). Craig Blomberg (stub-class) and I. Howard Marshall (start-class) are not good examples to follow. The best are FA-class articles, but B-class articles are good enough. A good example is Steve Cuozzo (B-class), which I recently posted. If you are looking to run a group to help write Wikipedia biographies, I'm more than willing to help out to show them the steps needed to construct Wikipedia biographies. In fact, Wikipedia:School and university projects is dedicated to what you propose: A project where your grad students write biographies that fit in Category:New Testament scholars. If you start such a project, let me know and I will be happy to help out. In the mean time, If you have a topic in mind for a New Testament scholar biography, I'd be happy to write it so you can get a better idea of what goes into a Wikipedia biography. -- Jreferee (talk) 03:21, 1 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
