Kingdom of Germany
[edit]Again, I do not agree with you, in all those cases in the article the use is of the actual title, it is not intended to be descriptive and therefore should be capitalised. Ecrm87 (talk) 20:46, 10 December 2022 (UTC)
- @Ecrm87 I'm not sure what you mean by "actual title" (what would another kind be?), and by the manual in the section I cut out they are descriptive because of the definite article. It also says that such titles "are capitalized only
- a) when followed by a person's name to form a title
- b) when a title is used to refer to a specific person as a substitute for their name during their time in office"
- c) … "is not preceded by a modifier (including a definite or indefinite article)"
- In the passage we're dissecting, no title is followed by a proper name (a); none is substituting for a specific duke, margrave or king – they're generic for any duke etc. who holds the title (b); and they all have the definite article 'the' in front of them (c).
- See also https://www.britannica.com/topic/elector It capitalizes just like I do on exactly the same topic. I know I'm not willing to argue with Britannica. Can we please say QED now? GHStPaulMN (talk) 21:58, 10 December 2022 (UTC)
- Very well, based on Britannica's usage I'll concede the titles. What I won't concede however is state name capitalisation, at no point is it united states of America, therefore it should always be Kingdom of, not kingdom of. Ecrm87 (talk) 22:43, 10 December 2022 (UTC)
- @Ecrm87 Thank you, and agreed on the state names. If I have any kingdom of X or duchy of Y in the article, they should definitely be changed.

Removal of markup from Gustav Ritter von Kahr
[edit]Hi, just a heads up, your edit removed some important markup, like the bold on the article title and the pronunciation template, but I fixed it. — W.andrea (talk) 21:01, 8 February 2023 (UTC)
- @W.andrea All of the markup changes (except the bolding, my bad) were deliberate choices on my part to remove what I consider to be unnecessary clutter. But they do seem to be standard, so I'll leave them be in future translations.
- I backed out your links to "dictatorial" and "coup" as everyday words that shouldn't be linked; see MoS Linking under 'What should not be linked'. I also don't think Bavaria (especially since it puts 3 links in a row), minister president or Hitler need to be linked since they're either well known or self-explanatory, but I'll admit there's more reason to use them there. GHStPaulMN (talk) 22:03, 8 February 2023 (UTC)
- Removing "dictatorial" and "coup" works for me; I wasn't sure about adding them in the first place. I should mention though, I'd never heard of a minister president before today. And I think it's important to link Bavaria since in historical articles, place names can sometimes be deceptive (like, say, "Russia" meaning the Russian Empire instead of the Russian Federation). — W.andrea (talk) 23:17, 8 February 2023 (UTC)
- I just noticed you didn't mention the pronunciation template. That's important too because it specifies a standard format (i.e. language label, link to explanation, and narrow transcription instead of broad per MOS:IPA). — W.andrea (talk) 23:25, 8 February 2023 (UTC)
Request for feedback
[edit]Hello GHStPaulMN. I am responding to your request for comments on your revisions to the Weimar Republic article. I have admired the significant improvements that you have made, which substantively improved the content. I was especially impressed with the rewrite of the section on the Versailles Treaty which added much-needed organization and clarity. Keep up the good work.
I'd also like to take this opportunity to commend your re-write of the Prussian State Council article and your creation of the new article on the Prussian State Council (Nazi Germany); this was long overdue and was masterfully done. If I may, I would like to request that you add an English translation (or at least a German version that could be copied into a translation app) of the Law on the State Council. This would be extremely helpful in providing a clearer picture of the council and its composition. Also, please note that the referenced version in the article seems to be missing the last page; the article references Article 15 but that is not in the cited copy. I have searched but have been unable to locate a better version. I am hoping that your well-demonstrated bilingual research abilities can manage to find one. Thanks in advance for any further improvement you can render and keep up your quest for excellence in these areas.```` Historybuff0105 (talk) 15:12, 6 May 2023 (UTC)
- @Historybuff0105: Hi, and thanks for the encouraging words on the Weimar Republic page. I'll keep chipping away at it.
- As for the Prussian State Council page, I tracked down Article 15 in the text of a document that has some significant differences from the one in fraktur that's referenced now. As soon as I figure out what's behind that, I'll add a translation. It's a good idea for a document that's relatively short. Thanks for the prompt -- and for adding all the other links to the new article. GHStPaulMN (talk) 01:08, 8 May 2023 (UTC)
- @GHStPaulMN, I just saw your addition. I think it does a great job of clarifying and expanding on the composition and workings of the Council. Thanks for all your work in tracking this down and adding the further explanatory notes. A very comprehensive and impressive effort. Thanks once again. Historybuff0105 (talk) 15:00, 9 May 2023 (UTC)

[edit]Hey there! I've seen that you are an interested and knowledgeable editor about German history. I'm currently rewriting the article about Ostsiedlung and if you have time, please help me rewrite the article and hopefully bring it to GA class. Crainsaw (talk) 19:46, 12 July 2023 (UTC)
- @Crainsaw Hello.. Intriguing request, although I admit that my first reaction was that Ostsiedlung is a topic I don't know much about. But before I answer, I'm curious to know what your interest is in rewriting the article. Is it mostly to make it GA, or does it also have problems or gaps that you'd like to address – and whichever it is, what kind of help you're looking for? Regards, GHStPaulMN (talk) 01:50, 13 July 2023 (UTC)
- When I first came across the article it was in ruins. Most sections barely had any information. And used the same sources. I dlund and used newer sources to expand the sections about Bohemia. And am currently rewriting tge Northeastern Germany and Holstein section. The section about the Livonian Confederation doesn't even include anything about the Ostsiedlung. So in short the article needs a major expansion and improvement. Hopefully along the way it'll also become a GA article. Crainsaw (talk) 05:40, 13 July 2023 (UTC)

Undefined sfn reference
[edit]Hi, in this edit to Papen cabinet you introduced sfn references to "Longerich 2015", but no such work is listed. This causes a no-target error. If you could fix it that would be great. DuncanHill (talk) 14:46, 10 September 2023 (UTC)

Saxony during the Weimar Republic
[edit]Hi I'm Interested in the creation of a article about Saxony in the Weimar Republic. I was wondering if that's something you would like to take part in? Zyxrq (talk) 03:17, 31 January 2024 (UTC)
- @Zyxrq Thanks for the offer, but my to-do list is pretty long already. If there are any particular points along the way that you want to try to pick my brain on, I'm always open for that. Have fun with the new article. GHStPaulMN (talk) 12:14, 31 January 2024 (UTC)

A book to translate
[edit]Hi User:GHStPaulMN. Like others, I'm impressed by your work here. I happen to know of an important book that needs a translator: Thomas Olechowski, Hans Kelsen. Biographie eines Rechtswissenschaftlers (Mohr Siebeck, 2020, 2. Auflage 2021). And see my review-article on it: Iain Stewart, "Hans Kelsen, Legal Scientist" (2023) 48(2) Journal of Legal Philosophy 119–192. If you would be interested, please contact Prof Olechowski (Director of the Hans Kelsen-Institut, Vienna) at: thomas.olechowski@univie.ac.at. The book is long (xxi+1029 pages), but clearly written. It would be marvellous if you could do this. I could help, if necessary, on matters of legal theory—and Olechowski's English is quite good—but the book focuses on the life rather than the thought. My piece includes a translation of the book's own summary, but the summary is in relatively simple language and my German is insufficient for the main text. I do hope you could do this. All the very best. Errantios (talk) 21:20, 16 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Errantios Hi, Iain. After giving myself a day to think about it, I've decided that my interest in tackling the translation outweighs my concern over the length of the book -- enough anyway so that I'll contact Prof. Olechowski to ask some questions and find out what his expectations are.
- I couldn't find where i can access your article without Institutional (or monetary) access. Any suggestions? And thank you for the compliment of contacting me about this. The corner of Wikipedia I mostly move around in tends to feel rather empty most of the time. GHStPaulMN (talk) 19:52, 17 November 2024 (UTC)
- @GHStPaulMN. Your interest is great news. Unfortunately, I am prohibited from sending you a copy of my article; it is available only through subscription to the journal. Perhaps you have a friend who has institutional access or maybe Olechowski could send a copy to you. All the very best. Errantios (talk) 22:14, 17 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Errantios I had a lot of trouble trying to figure out what questions to ask Prof. Olechowski, and after a while I realized that my difficulty centered on the amount of time I'd have to commit. On reflection I know I can't honestly make a commitment that will be very substantial indeed.
- I apologize for the about-face and hope you can find someone who will take on the translation. GHStPaulMN (talk) 02:25, 19 November 2024 (UTC)
- That's quite ok. Thank you very much for giving it some thought. Errantios (talk) 09:55, 19 November 2024 (UTC)
