Your question on my page

[edit]

You asked me why I removed that little white mushroom from the page for Category:Marasmiaceae. You know, that's a very good question! Now, I'm wondering if maybe I should have done something a bit (a lot) different.
The short answer is, I did it because the mushroom, Trogia venenata, was already in Category:Trogia. That category is itself a subcategory of Category:Marasmiaceae. And I understand that the preference is to put a thing only in the smallest category in which it is appropriate.
I don't remember whether I noticed that Category:Trogia has only the one article in it. (My own description of my edit tells me that I didn't actually move it from one category to another; in that case I would have noticed. But I found it in two, and so removed from the broader one.) Perhaps the thing to do would have been to remove it from Category:Trogia, and request that the category page be deleted. I don't know if that's done or not. Thanks for your reply! :-)
I'm still new to Wiki and learning. My intuitive understanding would be to have both categories open, since I would expect to have the mushroom show up both when looking for "Marasmiaceae" and when looking for "Trogia".
I didn't know that one usually keeps the smallest category. Seeing that it only contains one entry, it does make sense to me to delete that category.
Can you please explain to me what would happen if somebody else makes a new, second entry which would be appropriate for "Trogia"? Wouldn't he see that the category doesn't exist yet, but also decide against creating it, because it would only contain one entry (his, the new entry, assuming he doesn't know of this other, second mushroom)?
And if you have the time - please be so nice and tell me if I'm using this user talk incorrectly!
Many thanks
