Why the barn [[1]] should be given official SI status as a unit of area?
A yard is about a meter and a kilometer can roughly be thought of as 10 football fields (US) laid end to end. The distance light travels in one second is more football fields than I can think about.
When dealing with measurements so far removed from the human scale of perception, it seems worse to think of 10e-28 square meters vs a barn; meters has some connection with the ordinary macro-world. Barn does not, and therefore makes it easier to conceive of such small distances without any reference to meters in daily life. Same with gigameters vs light years.
I asked two non-physicists their opinion after explaining the matter, barn or 'ten to the minus 28 square meters' given both mean the same. 2/2 laypersons said barn.
Humorous is not relevant to the matter at hand. In fact it works to an advantage. It identifies the conversation to be about nuclear physics right away. Use 'intermediate vector boson' and outhouse in the same sentence and have it mean something... --Fx303 (talk) 22:09, 7 July 2009 (UTC)--Fx303 (talk) 22:09, 7 July 2009 (UTC)
area discussion in units of barns sheds and outhouses equates to silly and is thus about quantum physics By reason of being silly a matter is associated with quantum physics and this is a reason to form an ISO committee on silly names. Which angular momentum vs charm of a quark? Barn or ten to the minus twenty eight square meters.
Hmm? I'll sleep on it... --Fx303 (talk) 22:15, 7 July 2009 (UTC)
Adoption
[edit]Save the humans has offered to adopt you by placing a userbox on your talk page. I moved it over to your main page to take you out of the seeking adoption category. Please let Save the humans know on his talk page if you would like to go through with the adoption. xenocidic (talk) 21:51, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
- I Confirmed your adoption (it took me awhile how too) so what do you need help on. Save The HumansTalk :) 23:17, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
Welcome, and thanks for contributing! I was the last editor of that article however I only did a minor formatting edit of the layout to conform to Wikipedia's Manual of Style and I have no knowledge or expertise on the subject. I forwarded this message to Bosenova's Talk page and to WikiProject Physics' Talk page where I'm sure someone can help you with this. Sounds like it could be viewed by some editors as violating Wikipedia's Original Research policy however you mentioned it was based on "solid math and science references" so just be sure to cite your references, and go ahead and be bold! I'll help with any copy editing or formatting you may need. Expanding stubs is in my opinion the most productive way to contribute to Wikipedia so I'm grateful we have knowledgeable editors such as yourself that can do that. transmogrification defined in context of recycling
[edit]Recycling has a connotation new item will have some relationship to original. Recycled paper to lower quality paper, glass is still glass to be made into other glass items.
Transmogrification imposes no limits or assumptions. Keep it out of the landfill for a long time is what matters. If such requires framing in wood, and painting with original art to be hung on walls what was a motherboard; but it's not in the landfill seeping into the groundwater - that's fine. The more outrageous the better in keeping with the definition of the word.
What can you do with an empty lighter? make a spark? good reason if you have an oxy-mip welding rig to ignite.
Economics of Subtlety, take 3. This is very difficult to explain.
[edit]This is the Autonomous systems definition. It is a start.
The Economics of Scale is gains through mass production. The Economics of Efficiency is gains through streamlining a process
The Economics of Subtlety requires an infrastructure comprised of self-organizing autonomous systems. These operate without human supervision or awareness. The gain is precisely through the operation of these systems transparent to the human population - hence subtle. external reference
When finished, this will be about 10 pages.
OK, let's define the word subtle, from the OSX dictionary:
subtle |ˈsətl|
adjective ( -tler , -tlest )
(esp. of a change or distinction) so delicate or precise as to be difficult to analyze or describe : his language expresses rich and subtle meanings. • (of a mixture or effect) delicately complex and understated : subtle lighting. • making use of clever and indirect methods to achieve something : he tried a more subtle approach. • capable of making fine distinctions : a subtle mind. • arranged in an ingenious and elaborate way. • archaic crafty; cunning.
|
That first definition makes writing this article difficult by the definition itself:
so delicate or precise as to be difficult to analyze or describe. Based on that, the Economics of Subtlety is difficult to describe.
So, let us use the remaining definitions to do the job:
delicately complex and understated
making use of clever and indirect methods to achieve something
capable of making fine distinctions
arranged in an ingenious and elaborate way
archaic crafty; cunning
maybe one of these will help us out... I think I will try some combination of each with examples to define this concept.

The Economics of Subtlety
[edit]This is about the Economics of Subtlety from an Autonomous Systems [1] viewpoint.
Economics of Scale [[2]] is gains through mass production. The Economics of Efficiency [[3]] is gains through streamlining a process.
The Economics of Subtlety requires an infrastructure comprised of self-organizing autonomous systems. These operate without human supervision or awareness. The gain is precisely through the operation of these systems transparent to the human population - hence subtle. See this external reference as a general idea to aid in understanding: [4]
What I shall do is illustrate the concept using examples and analogies because the definition of Subtle precludes a more precise approach by way of the definition itself.
Take a family at breakfast, as the sugar goes around the older of the two kids dumps the remaining sugar into his cereal. The younger kid screams in protest. Now the attention of both parents are required to deal with the situation. They probably were thinking about more important issues, perhaps the father is a biochemist working on a cure for HIV and the mother an elected official trying to reform the education system. Now this silly sugar issue requires their attention.
Without going into details, let's propose and end result. It may be more effective to show the negative economic consequences where the economics of subtlety is not utilized.
"Hypothetical News Report"
Traffic on all major thoroughfares is backed up for at least 3 hours in all directions due to an accident early in the morning. An 18 wheeler hauling hazmat overturned while attempting to avoid a pedestrian who dashed from between two parked cars in a supermarket parking lot. The Hydrogen Sulfuric acid gas released required immediate evacuation of the surrounding area and caused further accidents as people attempted to flee the spill. The authorities are working but have not set a time when the situation would return to normal and the evacuation may be extended an extra day as a safety precaution pending testing for pockets of gas that may linger."
This all due to the sugar running out in one family home. Whereas if a system flagged the sugar level as a watch and act on item, the newspaper boy could deliver extra sugar long before the family ran low and thus avoid the hypothetical situation described above.

pseudolife (Band's Name)
[edit]Name of Band, this talk is about levels of meaning in the name pseudolife.
The musician and other performing artists group, pseudolife, was founded today, Sunday December 20th 2009. A loose group of remote artistic collaborators seemed to agree on the name today.
Since everyone is physically in different locations, can't really play like a live band - which is not the entire reason for the name - pseudolife, but is part the reason.
pseudo is an adjective meaning false, not-genuine, deceptive, imitative.
Therefore pseudolife means "false or deceptive or not-genuine life". This definition can be viewed from the entire range of contextual possibilities and the name pseudolife is intended to be inclusive of all possible contextual levels and retain this linguistic complexity and expand on it whenever possible. Pseudo is a homonym for sudo, the unix command to execute as superuser. Used metaphorically this way it expands on the complexity of the name to include "act like you own the universe" or "pretentious ephemerals acting like gods". (to be continued)
