Thank you so much for your supportive words at Wikipedia:Category types. There are a handful of people who have expressed interest. Since this is a wiki, and the category types are not really any different than templates that appear on other categories, we can just start adding them and see what happens. I added one to Category:Computer languages and mentioned it a couple places and did not get a single comment. Its survival on the page, without comment, means that it was found to be acceptable by people who monitor and visit the page. This is in line with the consensus guidelines.

To proceed, I think it would be best to add the templates to a mature, established category hierarchy that is already organized into topic, navigation, index and subject categories.

I was hoping that others would have improvements to add to the templates before they were used widely. Perhaps they will evolve as they get used. -- Samuel Wantman 02:46, 15 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Are there any other existing categories that have the templates applied?

I just checked. They haven't been used on any other pages. To find out if a template has been used, you go to the template page and click on "What links here" link in the toolbox.

Is there any way to mark a category with a type without adding the template (or anything else visible)?

Why would you want to do that? As of now, the only thing that marks a category as a certain type is saying that it is a certain type. There is no precedent for marking category types, it is just something I am proposing.

Is it possible to make edits to a page and then "propose" the changes without commiting?

If you want to propose a change, you can post something on the talk page. You can also be bold and just make the change. If you go to far, someone will revert your change. This isn't a problem as long as you remain polite, and don't get into an edit war over your change. The reason I haven't put these on many pages yet is two-fold. First, I would like more people involved in designing them. Once they are on many pages, it will be a great deal of work to make major revisions if the parameters change. Second, I haven't had the time recently to dedicate myself to the effort.
