Where to place templates?
[edit]Hi, I noticed you had modified the template for Canadian cinema, which I've been adding to my Canadian film articles (and added Festivals). Perhaps you can help me? Should the template go at the very bottom -- even after film stub cats -- or above the categories? Thanks Shawn in Montreal 13:43, 9 August 2007 (UTC)
- I'd place the "footer" templates directly above the stub templates, so the page ends with 1) footer templates, 2) stub templates, 3) categories and 4) inter-wikilinks. There may be a (contradicting?) rule on this, but I wasn't able to find it –Fred Bradstadt 14:51, 9 August 2007 (UTC)
- Great, that's more or less what I've been doing. Thank you, Shawn in Montreal 15:19, 9 August 2007 (UTC)

Can it be set on auto collapse though? ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you?" Contribs 10:41, 16 August 2007 (UTC)
- It can be set to almost anything you like. You can read the documentation at {{Navbox generic}}. –Fred Bradstadt 11:26, 16 August 2007 (UTC)
New template
[edit]I've just made a new template: {{refspam}} I don't have any aspirations of becoming a template editor - I have more than enough to learn in other areas. So I wondered if you could advise me on what, if anything, should be fixed in this template. It is meant for use on the top of article talk pages just before the talkheader template. I think it should probably be made narrower. Maybe there is a need to add some kind of documentation code and category coding? If it would be quicker for you to just do it than it would to explain to me how to do it, I would be grateful if you just did it. GrahameKing 20:44, 2 September 2007 (UTC)

Template request
[edit]Hi, I was told you were the "king of templates" and was hoping you could help me with something. I want to change Template:Monty Python to standard show collapsed since the template right now is just too big. Unfortunately right now it doesn't collapse at all and I don't really know how make it a: collapsible and b: to automatically show collapsed. Could you help? Garion96 (talk) 19:06, 3 September 2007 (UTC)
- Hi Garion. Thanks for the kind words :-) I have changed {{Monty Python}} as requested, hopefully to your liking. If I were to decide, I'd substitute
toccolours
fornavbox
in the header and trash the rest of that line except the class attribute, and I'd remove allstyle="background-color:…
attributes. Best regards, Fred Bradstadt 20:47, 3 September 2007 (UTC)- Hey, you fixed the temple, you can decide. :) Thanks for fixing this, and so fast even. Btw, those words were not mine but Blofeld's. It does seem to be true though. Garion96 (talk) 21:01, 3 September 2007 (UTC)

Hi, I've been adding the numbers to the drivers entry list of 2008. I've noticed that you have erased them. It's the right order in which the teams are listed with McLaren at the end of the list. Even if the entry list is not completed, I think that the numbers can be there, because to be quite honest I don't see the reason why not to put them. If you have a good explication to give me, go for it as it may help me understand it, but in the meantime I've added back them, waiting for your explication.VincentG (talk) 03:18, 12 December 2007 (UTC)
- The latest revert [1] says it all: "How do you know Hamilton will be #22, not #23?" I say let's wait until we have the official numbers, then we know who are first and 2nd drivers on each team. –Fred Bradstadt (talk) 07:37, 12 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit]Can you fix this badly organized template thanks
{{Taxi}}
♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ Talk? 17:08, 28 December 2007 (UTC)
Wow your editing those templates quickly. I like your changes to the base tenplates but could you make them like Template:CinemaofHongKong -the film icon looks best on the left I think. However I think the bold for the side templates is more attractive specifically for the film lists ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ Talk? 20:16, 28 December 2007 (UTC)
In fact your changes to the base plate look great if the image is on the left. Could you do Template:CinemaofItaly in the way Japan and Hong Kong are now? ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ Talk? 20:21, 28 December 2007 (UTC)
- With the image on the right, the template code is used properly, wheras with the image on the left, the
image
parameter is left blank and the image put into the firstgroup
parameter. Also, I think it looks better with the image on the right. Otherwise, you could ask in Template talk:Navbox if someone would implement an extra parameter to optionally place the image in the left side of the template. - For the "side templates" (aka infobox) such as {{Italianfilmlist}}, I find it best to stick with the standard style (that is,
class="infobox"
and optionallystyle="text-align:center"
. If you think all infoboxes should be boldface, ask in MediaWiki talk:Common.css and MediaWiki talk:Monobook.css. - I don't mean to be rude, but if you look at the changes I have made to the films templates, you should quickly be able to fix the templates by yourself. :-)

Cape Breton Oilers
[edit]I see that you changed the table format on Cape Breton Oilers. Before you did so, all 29 current and 77 defunct teams in the American hockey league had the same format. Will you be updating the other 105 articles as well? Flibirigit (talk) 02:54, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

{{PRR locomotives}}
[edit]Your conversion of this to use the Navbox templates has left it nigh-on unreadable, though I agree that it might be a good idea to do it. Some more structure is needed than a simple list like that. Matthew Brown (Morven) (T:C) 00:53, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

Guantanamo captives
[edit]I saw you did more work on List of Guantanamo Bay detainees than has been done i na long time.
It has been massively out of date since April 20 2006, when the DoD was forces to release this list:
- OARDEC (April 20 2006). "List of detainee who went through complete CSRT process" (PDF). United States Department of Defense. Retrieved 2007-09-29.

(help) - OARDEC (May 15 2006). "List of Individuals Detained by the Department of Defense at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba from January 2002 through May 15, 2006" (PDF). United States Department of Defense. Retrieved 2007-09-29.

(help)
Bringing it up to date could be daunting amount of work, depending on how ambitious one is.
I spent a lot of effort on this list: User:Geo Swan/Guantanamo/List of Guantanamo Bay detainees
I got close to 80 percent finished, when the DoD released another 1000 documents last September. I started a new list. User:Geo Swan/Guantanamo/September2007/union This last list leaves out any notes about who the captives are, just provides links to within the official documents.
I wouldn't want you to do a bunch of work, only to learn later that you are duplicating work I have in my user space.
Cheers! Geo Swan (talk) 18:01, 11 January 2008 (UTC)

Help needed on Template to stop edit warring
[edit]Hi, I see that you are knowledgeable about templates and navboxes, I was wondering if you could lend your assistance to solve an ongoing dispute concerning Template:Notable Rulers of Sumer. I noticed that you helped add a hide / show bar to another one of my favorite templates, Template:Sons of Noah. I am copying what just I wrote to WPNAVBOX below, to explain the problem. Til Eulenspiegel (talk) 00:39, 3 February 2008 (UTC)
- I have been trying in vain since yesterday to get a third opinion at the Ancient History project, meanwhile edit wars are continuing over a template, Template:Notable Rulers of Sumer. The problem is a stalemate between myself and User:Sumerophile, over whether the template serves better on the articles in question as he thinks, resembling an "infobox" in the upper right hand corner, or as I think, centered, and toward the bottom of the article near "see also", more like a "navbox". The purpose of the template is to help users reading an article about a Sumerian king, to find other Wikipedia articles that have been written about Sumerian kings. I have argued that this is "see also" type material and not suited to an "infobox" that needs to be at the upper right corner. Furthermore, while most of these articles are stubs, positioning the templates as he wishes instead of the way they were before all this, results in a long stream of templates running down the right margin, several times longer than the article text itself. If someone who is knowledgeable about templates can come up with any solutions, they are urgently needed. If I knew how to put a "hide / show" bar on it, I would do that and solve the whole problem. Thanks, Til Eulenspiegel (talk)
- There you go: {{Notable Rulers of Sumer}}. I hope it will help end your edit war :-) –Fred Bradstadt (talk) 09:29, 3 February 2008 (UTC)

- 20:25, 17 February 2008 Fred Bradstadt (Talk | contribs) (2,198 bytes) (Convert to navbox template)
Seems unnecessary. For one thing, I'd say the scattered parenthesized years decrease clarity... Sardanaphalus (talk) 21:06, 17 February 2008 (UTC)
- I think the horizontal listing ("my" version) works better, though I know what you mean about the parenthesized years. It seems a lot of the templates in Category:Author navigational boxes lists their eventual years this way, so I edited along the same lines. But if you prefer I change the years back to the
<small>YYYY</small>
style – sure, I'll do it :-) Fred Bradstadt (talk) 22:00, 17 February 2008 (UTC)- Done, along with a few other tweaks; hope you don't mind. Yes, I see what you mean about Category:Author navigational boxes, so I guess it's a case of "on the one hand [they mean less space is used in templates], but on the other [arguably the templates are less clear]…"
- Seeing
{{Nowrap}} and {{·}}
in the template's code reminded me of two other thoughts I'd appreciate your counsel on:- When these nowrapped links become (very) long, as in this template, huge gaps can appear at the ends of lines, especially on smaller screens and/or in smaller windows, so perhaps a nowrapped-links default not such a good idea...?
- Although
{{·}}
is a neat idea, I've noticed it occasionally causes the middot dividers to step outside the edge of a box or background. It's a tiny anomaly, but I wondered if it can be countered without losing{{·}}
's usefulness...?
(I've seen the formula{{nowrap| … •}}
, but unfortunately the bullet character has appeared too prominent on the screens and browsers I've seen to date...)
- Thanks for your thoughts and work. Sardanaphalus (talk) 09:34, 18 February 2008 (UTC)
- Regarding 1: Nowrapped links should't be too long, I agree. But using a non-breaking space between the link and the following ·/• is necessary.
- Regarding 2: The problem isn't caused by the {{·}}, but by the
nowraplinks
class that is applied to {{navbox}} and others. There is a bit of talk about it at Template talk:Nowraplinks - –Fred Bradstadt (talk) 19:43, 24 February 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks. I'll take a look there. Sardanaphalus (talk) 02:56, 25 February 2008 (UTC)
Template:Baldwin
[edit]Hey, thanks for the fix at {{Baldwin}}, I was meaning to find a workaround at some point ... and I realized that my last edit summary may have come off kinda "bitchy" so sorry about that, LOL. — TAnthonyTalk 17:37, 18 February 2008 (UTC)
- It's funny, 'cause the workaround isn't necessary when using the Safari browser. So I didn't see the problem until I remembered that Firefox (and possibly Internet Explorer) renders that
class="nowraplinks"
stuff different. And no, your edit summaries didn't help me either ;-) All the best, Fred Bradstadt (talk) 17:51, 18 February 2008 (UTC)
