From A history of medicine by Arturo Castiglioni, p.36,

"We all know that stethoscope, a simple device that brought revolution to medical science, was invented in 1816 by a Frenchman named René Laennec. But Zhang Liang, an almost unknown ancient Chinese physician, invented "Meng" in 56 BC. This wooden device can be reasonably called an example of a primitive stethoscope."

"In the first two decade of this century, British medicine, as was European medicine in general, was characterized by its close association with religion. This association was so prevalent that a a lot of physicians, most of them county practitioners, sought the permission of local churches before prescribing medicines, particularly in case of those patients who were diagnosed with sexually transmitted diseases and other critical diseases. That's strange, the 1958 edition, which I believe is what you cited, is available on Google books in snippet view, but I can't get hits on any of that. In particular, "Meng", "Zhang Liang" or chinese stethoscope do not come up. Same goes for the 1947 edition. I'll take it on good faith that those are fair quotations, but would you mind e-mailing me a scan of those two pages? In any case I would still maintain that describing the "Meng" as a precursor of the modern stethoscope is misleading. Your source does not seem to support the idea that Laennec's stethoscope is in any way a descendent of the Meng. Rather, it seems to have been completely forgotten in the intervening centuries and Laennec independently invented it. SpinningSpark 14:12, 1 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
