Re: Wikipedia e-mail
[edit]I'm sorry that you cannot edit due to the open proxies being blocked; however, that had to be done due to abuse of the proxies. You could try using the SSL server, as explained at Wikipedia:Advice to Tor users in China. --cesarb 00:09, 23 July 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for you reply! Now I can use SSL to edit. But, I have some questions to ask you. (maybe some were told on other pages, but I did't find it, and my English isn't good) Why proxy (Tor) users are blocked? What is the reason? Now maybe 1.3 billion Chinese have to use it to visit Wikipedia. And, using SSL is strangely slow! Opening one page maybe cost me (more than) 1 minute, if I make an edit, from opening the page, editing, to saving it, maybe cost me 5 minites! And it seems I can't see pictures while using SSL. So, please tell me in simple way: why block proxy (tor) users? (Please also copy the reply to zh:User talk:Flsxx.) Thank you very much!--Flsxx 08:32, 27 August 2006 (UTC)
- Open proxy users are blocked due to abuse; several vandals were using open proxies (and later tor nodes) to evade blocks. It's unfortunate that this also blocks legitimate open proxy users. The pictures on the SSL page are coming from the non-SSL image server; if it's blocked by a firewall somewhere, you can try configuring your browser to send requests for upload.wikimedia.org to tor, while keeping SSL connections to secure.wikimedia.org direct. The slowness is probably caused by the fact that there's a single SSL server, located in the USA, while there are many non-SSL servers in several places around the world. SSL also does some negotiation which makes it slower when the server is in another continent (but even that would add only a few more seconds to each page load; I'd guess your slowness is more probably related to either server load or a timeout trying to contact the image server). --cesarb 15:54, 27 August 2006 (UTC)
