yo

Yo, just shot my mouth off [[1]] and in the new subsection within that just now. I'm very disappointed and sadly not surprised at the equivocations/rationalizations I've seen about the Chipewyan/Denesuline close - from someone who didn't even take part, no less. As per your own comments in the aftermath of that RM, I'm not the only one who thinks that was a bad call; among so many. I've been trying to work on geographic articles and today on tidying up various IR/FN articles and the main IR list, and have in the works a full listing of ethnonym titles and their status/history; WP:NCL is being stonewalled by the usual suspect; and yet I was singled out in pure AGF about "it is unfortunate that one editor chose to misrepresent a guideline" when it's not me who's been representing guidelines. The air of cant around so much of this kind of thing will always taint my feelings about this place, and knowing that people feel empowered to pontificate on subjects they know nothing about based on guidelines they haven't even fully read/comprehend, leads me to think taht all my years here have been a waste of time. Still, I plug on......though I will never forgive and never forget the way I was treated by people whose own good faith is so markedly NOT in everything they do or say, and will just keep out of their way as much as is possible; there are fewer and fewer WPCanada people, not many working on history or geography or "serious subjects"......and of the Canadian Wikipedians, as you observe, not many are involved or even working on Canadian topics....as with the Canadian polity as a whole, non-involvement is damaging the country, and the country's representation here on Wikipedia. There's tons of work to be done and articles to be created and updated/expanded, and we find our time taken up having to correct titles and categories meddled with by people who don't even know the places/subjects in question.....the absurdities I don't have to re-explain to you....I'll be gone tomorrow, time for a border run to Malaysia, starting at 4 a.m. groan, with a van full of Russians LOL.....we have some new input from a local re Bella Coola, which is great, so I've been populating that area with geo-articles, also around Prince Rupert last night, and an Alaskan supportive of the Boundary Ranges thing......why aren't there more people like that? I guess because it's too easy to become and admin, and t oo much fun power-tripping there and not doing any actual real work on the encyclopedia itself.....Skookum1 (talk) 07:32, 1 May 2014 (UTC)

Wow... border run to Malaysia... and here I am sitting in my bedroom in Toronto all day! It's funny, because proportionally to population, Canadians have always been considered the most active group of editors. Although, have to wonder how many of those focus on Canadian articles, let alone on places, languages, cultures, history and geography. I imagine many of the people opposing your move are doing so in good faith (can't say the same of the ANI), but simply have some similar example that is local to them where the opposite case was true. Also, I believe another angle to consider is the Anglicization of aboriginal place/language names (ex. Beijing vs. Peking). But, you are certainly right that by avoiding your adversaries, you avoid all the needless drama. - Floydian τ ¢ 02:46, 2 May 2014 (UTC)

FAC

If you have some time, could you take a look at the FAC entry for Voting Rights Act of 1965? It wouldn't hurt to have someone who isn't a law-geek like me take a look at the wording ;) –Prototime (talk · contribs) 04:04, 2 May 2014 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Ontario Highway 23

The article Ontario Highway 23 you nominated as a good article has been placed on hold . The article is close to meeting the good article criteria, but there are some minor changes or clarifications needing to be addressed. If these are fixed within 7 days, the article will pass; otherwise it may fail. See Talk:Ontario Highway 23 for things which need to be addressed. Highway 23

File:Mitchell, Ontario, Canada.jpg shows a Hwy 23 marker in Mitchell. Secondarywaltz (talk) 22:15, 3 May 2014 (UTC)

Never been the biggest fan of the images that informatively only show a marker (although I try to incorporate markers into a larger picture still). However, that led me to File:Highway 8 and 23 in Mitchell, Ontario.png, which is a nice shot (and I converted it to png to get rid of the jpg artifacting in the sky). Thanks! - Floydian τ ¢ 22:48, 3 May 2014 (UTC)

FA congratulations

Just a quick note to congratulate you on the promotion of Ontario Highway 402 to FA status recently. If you would like to see this (or any other FA) appear as "Today's featured article" soon, please nominate it at the requests page; if you'd like to see an FA on a particular date in the next year or so, please add it to the "pending" list. In the absence of a request, the article may end up being picked at any time (although with 1,301 articles in Category:Featured articles that have not appeared on the main page at present, there's no telling how long – or short! – the wait might be).
You (and your talk-page stalkers) may also be interested to hear that there have been some changes at the TFA requests page recently. Nominators no longer need to calculate how many "points" an article has, the instructions have been simplified, and there's a new nomination system using templates based on those used for DYK suggestions. Please consider nominating another article, or commenting on an existing nomination, and leaving some feedback on your experience. If you'd got any TFA-related questions or problems, please let me know. BencherliteTalk 09:09, 6 May 2014 (UTC)

Cathedral (U.S. Prog Band)

Hi Floydian, you have helped me in the past with various requests, and I thank you, again, for your generous participation. I have a strong urge to try to create an article on Cathedral, the U.S. progressive rock band from the 70's.

  • Do you think this is possible, given the small coverage they have received?
  • Do you know anyone who would want to participate, or be a partner in this project?

For me, the Progressive Rock area would benefit from an article on this brilliant, but almost unknown prog act. I am very interested to know your opinion. Have a great dayCaesarsPalaceDude (talk) 15:55, 6 May 2014 (UTC)

I'm trying to find some info on them, but I'm having difficulty outside of the progarchives/dprp. Unfortunately, the virtuosity of doom metal tends to result in bands being lumped into "progressive metal", and when I think I've found something, URTZ URTZ URTZ starts beating at my eardrums :/ - Floydian τ ¢ 06:24, 8 May 2014 (UTC)
Hi User:Floydian, in this particular case, you are guaranteed not to get the URTZ URTZ feeling because this American prog band has nothing to do with doom metal. Please, allow me to explain. There are two bands called Cathedral. One is an English doom metal band, which has been covered on Wikipedia here. The other one is hardly known at all. They are an American symphonic prog outfit who produced only two albums: Stained Glass Stories in 1978, and The Bridge in 2007. This band is interesting to me, because some reviewers on ProgArchives have talked about these guys producing music similar to Änglagård, but almost 20 years earlier (their 1978 album). The Änglagård article already has a red link to the American "Cathedral" (put there by another Wikipedian, not me) in the first sentence. The questions I am considering:
I am prepared to do the majority of the work on this subject. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.CaesarsPalaceDude (talk) 00:15, 12 May 2014 (UTC)

Ontario Highway 127

Ontario Highway 127 was the first article I started here, glad to see it (what was formerly my driveway, effectively) as a Good Article. Cheers, --kelapstick(bainuu) 21:17, 18 May 2014 (UTC)

Maple Syrup Report

Any thoughts on putting one together for WP:USRD/NR? I'm trying to get some sort of issue out with a May time stamp if I can. Imzadi 1979  03:11, 27 May 2014 (UTC)

I'd be happy to. I figured the last issue was a no go, so I have an issues-worth ready for whenever. - Floydian τ ¢ 03:36, 27 May 2014 (UTC)
Go ahead and post whenever you can. Once we get some replies from the new (to USRD) editor interviews, and someone pulls together the leaderboard, we'll publish the issue. I'm aiming for a May timestamp. Imzadi 1979  03:38, 27 May 2014 (UTC)

Can I use your userpage design?

Hello, I have been looking for a new userpage design for a little while. I was wondering if I could use yours. Cheers, Brmedia 22:10, 4 June 2014 (UTC)

Go for it, just pick out a different colour scheme if you could please. Cheers, Floydian τ ¢ 23:19, 4 June 2014 (UTC)
Thank you. Cheers, Brmedia 20:40, 5 June 2014 (UTC)

Browsing Commons I found the Canadian Crown copyright discussions and your name rang a bell with me. I very much hope this is all sorted out now. There is an amicable discussion at Wikipedia:Non-free content review#File:SS PrincessMary Victoria 14Feb1915 (3).jpg where I think your knowledge might be helpful. FAC comments

Hello Floydian. By reading your Wiki profile, I coincidentally noticed that we're from the same profession, so thought to give you a call. It's about Megadeth, my FA candidate. The nomination is here, so please post comments regarding the article's quality and your opinion whether it meets the FA criteria. Thanks for your time and see you.--Retrohead (talk) 21:34, 2 July 2014 (UTC)

Hello mate. Are you able to provide some input on the FAC, or maybe I should contact another editor?--Retrohead (talk) 08:28, 11 July 2014 (UTC)
In all honesty, I would love to review Megadeth, but I don't get to edit very often, and I don't feel like I could properly review a band article at FAC with my lack of experience. Sorry my friend. Cheers, Floydian τ ¢ 08:48, 11 July 2014 (UTC)

Sorry, I don't recall the date of the image. No doubt between '64 and '66.

Newspaper databases

I just saw your CWNB post from last week about looking for Ottawa Citizen access — while I can't help you by literally swapping library card information, as I'm in Toronto rather than Ottawa, I do have a suggestion you might want to look into. I don't know if your ProQuest access is through the Toronto Public Library or not, but if it is you will (and even if it's through a different library system you still might) also have access to a database called "Canadian Newsstand Major Dailies" — I've sourced stuff to the Citizen through it many times now, so you should definitely see if you've got it or not. Bearcat (talk) 03:20, 20 August 2014 (UTC)

Ah! Awesome, thank you! I also found anotherone in the TPL database list thanks to an odd source on the 407. It's listed as Canadian Business and Current Affairs. This has several smaller town newspapers in addition to commercial/business publications. Cheers - Floydian τ ¢ 22:27, 26 August 2014 (UTC)

Infobox road browsers

I had to revert you. Your edit, while it looked like it should have worked, seemed to remove all browsers, which is not what you wanted at all. –Fredddie 20:21, 29 August 2014 (UTC)
