[edit]Please do not remove maintenance templates from pages on Wikipedia, as you did to Draft:Sandbox, without resolving the problem that the template refers to, or giving a valid reason for the removal in the edit summary. Your removal of this template does not appear constructive, and has been reverted. Thank you. Technopat (talk) 16:15, 1 July 2023 (UTC)

[edit]Hi Fioja23! I noticed that you recently marked an edit as minor that may not have been. "Minor edit" has a very specific definition on Wikipedia—it refers only to superficial edits that could never be the subject of a dispute, such as typo corrections or reverting obvious vandalism. Any edit that changes the meaning of an article is not a minor edit, even if it only concerns a single word. Please see Help:Minor edit for more information. Thank you. Notability of Academics
[edit]Hi Fioja23 since you are interested in historic academics, can I suggest you read Wikipedia:Notability (academics) which gives an indication of the normal threshold for us to have an article on someone. ϢereSpielChequers 07:40, 5 August 2023 (UTC)
The article Margaret Boyle has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
Notability - does not meet WP:GNG or Wikipedia:Notability (academics)
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. –CaroleHenson (talk) 15:50, 5 August 2023 (UTC)

Hello
[edit]I am sorry that you are getting so many deletion tags. It's because the subject of the articles do not appear to meet notability requirements.
What is needed is content that says how the subject has accomplished more than other academics, such as multiple sources about their achievements. I have been trying to find content for Thomas Lumsden, perhaps that his paper (and perhaps other publications) are notable in his field. Another tack to take is that it appears to me that Lumsden went to the United States in December 1942 to be part of some intelligence work in collaboration with Americans.
I would be very happy to help round out the Lumsden article - or another subject you may have - to ensure that there are enough book, newspaper, or other publications for notabililty.
I had the same issue when I started here and understand how you may be feeling - but I had a lot of stellar help to get me on track.–CaroleHenson (talk) 15:51, 8 August 2023 (UTC)
- Minor edits.–CaroleHenson (talk) 21:28, 8 August 2023 (UTC)
- I tried searching for "Thomas Lumsden" (also with his middle initial and middle name) in newspapers, ancestry (but only have access to U.S.), biographical info about him for his wife or son, etc. but there's only so much I can do in the U.S.–CaroleHenson (talk) 15:55, 8 August 2023 (UTC)
Welcome
[edit]As someone whose mother grew up in Newport-on-Tay and was one of a pair of identical twins studying chemistry at St Andrews in the 1930s (she and her sister got a special mention in the speech when they graduated!), I was interested to see your Mary Simpson (mathematician), though sadly it seems that her article may not survive. I notice that you say you are part of a STEP course at St Andrews: I wonder if the tutor and students have read all the useful information which Wikipedia provides here to support student work, which includes encouraging adding banners to article talk pages to alert editors to the fact that the page has been created as part of a student project. But most importantly, you and your colleagues need to be familiar with the Notability rules, to avoid wasting time and energy creating articles on people who don't seem to tick enough boxes, eg in WP:NPROF. Good luck with your editing.
PS I'm glad to see that someone has added her to Mary Simpson - not you, unless you forgot to log on to do so. Whenever you create an article with a "disambiguated" title, it's important to add a link from the basic title, whether via a hatnote or a disambiguation page. There's always something more to learn about editing Wikipedia, but it's an interesting journey! PamD 08:32, 9 August 2023 (UTC)
- PPS I see that, despite having a non-identifying username, you've chosen to mention your real name on your user page. Many editors prefer not to do so, on the off chance that they might at some point want to preserve their anonymity (which Wikipedia will defend to the hilt). I started editing under my full name, many years ago, then opted for a minimised version of it - I think I'd had a run-in with a disagreeable, possibly unbalanced, other editor and decided to protect myself. Your choice, just thought I'd mention it. PamD 08:36, 9 August 2023 (UTC)
