Hymenophyllum peltatum
[edit]I note that you give a distribution for this filmy fern which includes Europe. I can't access the book source you have given, but sites such as this clearly show a southern hemisphere distribution. For the record I have never seen this in Europe and I can state unequivocally that it is absent from the both the UK and Ireland. I am also aware from Kew records of an African distribution in Tanzania, Madagascar etc. Could you please give a literal quote from your source that indicates a presence in the Northern Hemisphere? Thank you Velella Velella Talk 00:02, 15 March 2020 (UTC)
- Hello, thanks for your message.
- I source i used is: Duncan, Betty D; Isaac, Golda (1986). Ferns and allied plants. Carlton, Victoria: Melbourne University Press. pp. 81–89. On page 89, the distribution is described as "(Australia), NZ, South America, South Africa and Europe" but does not specify where in Europe.
- Do you have a link to the Kew record mentioned? I was under the impression that iNaturalist is a good guide but cannot always garruntee accurate data?
- kind regards.

- This link quotes the Kew herbarium record which shows a distribution wholly within the Southern hemisphere. This is an important distinction as many plants have an exclusive distribution in one hemisphere or another or, as possibly in this case, and ancestry traceable back to Gondwana. - And this check list of world ferns lists a considerable number of countries and regions, all of which are restricted to the Southern hemisphere. It does seem to be a Gondwana species absent fromthe Northern Hemishphere. Velella Velella Talk 19:15, 15 March 2020 (UTC)
Hello,
thanks for your message. I have discussed it with a lecturer at uni and made appropriate changes (ie. removed europe from distribution) - appears the book ive used is likely to be out of date and what was previously H.peltatum in the NH is now known as a different species.
kind regards.
