VandalProof 1.2 Now Available

After a lenghty, but much-needed Wikibreak, I'm happy to announce that version 1.2 of VandalProof is now available for download! Beyond fixing some of the most obnoxious bugs, like the persistent crash on start-up that many have experienced, version 1.2 also offers a wide variety of new features, including a stub-sorter, a global user whitelist and blacklist, navigational controls, and greater customization. You can find a full list of the new features here. While I believe this release to be a significant improvement over the last, it's nonetheless nowhere near the end of the line for VandalProof. Thanks to Rob Church, I now have an account on test.wikipedia.org with SysOp rights and have already been hard at work incorporating administrative tools into VandalProof, which I plan to make available in the near future. An example of one such SysOp tool that I'm working on incorporating is my simple history merge tool, which simplifies the process of performing history merges from one article into another. Anyway, if you haven't already, I'd encourage you to download and install version 1.2 and take it out for a test-drive. Community Justice is no more. It has been reformed to Concordia. Membership has been transferred.

Concordia is an organization of editors on Wikipedia that strive to encourage civility and fair treatment among all editors in the Wikipedian community, from the Wikignome to the Wikiholic. The project was designed to have a friendly and helpful environment to support any unfortunate Wikipedians that have become victims of incivility, hostility, or continual disrespect.

We currently need help in getting going, and making the community understand our aims. We work for civility. Nothing more, nothing less.

I am extremely unhappy with this admin's stance on thumb-size images. If nothing can be done through mediation, I'll go to arbitration. There are few editors here in WP who would agree with his narrow view; it's a RARE article (especially in the FA category) which conforms to this arbitrary and unstated rule. It's obvious to anyone who writes in good faith for WP that thumb-size is an unacceptable limitation; I can find NOTHING in the form of WP policy which states that I MUST use thumb-size images. It's this sort of nit-picking and abuse of authority that discourages people like me from being a part of Wikipedia. I'm not a stupid person, just ignorant here on this site. Doesn't mean I'm totally ignorant though, I'm almost 62 years old. So I've been around and done a few things.

I don't have time to check all the policies and guidelines here; I've tried it and found myself goin' 'round in circles. There are so many that it's easy to get lost trying to find what you forgot you were lookin' for.

So I leave that to others. I'd like to address the points you have made.

(1) "I have already cited the policy, it says to generally use thumbnail images. Of course, it also says that setting it is acceptable."

This is my argument; "general" and "setting is acceptable", up to 250px, and perhaps more.

(2) "it is general practice here to use thumbnail images instead of setting the pixel size."

I'm sorry, but I disagree. Obviously, a Featured article is the "finest that Wikipedia has to offer". When "Loung Ung" was changed by the professor, repeatedly, I checked out a few Featured articles for the incidence of "thumb" images. Of the first six, all included images with pixels set. I'd venture to speculate that 85%, perhaps more, of all Featured articles follow this trend (just a guess, based on statistical probabilities; I don't have time to verify it because there are some 1000 FAs).

Your argument about 800x600 is not really valid; "entry level" monitors are 17-inch for home and office, and have been for at least a year, perhaps two. These all specify a native resolution of 1024x768. There may be some people who are restricted to 14-inch monitors and 800x600, but I doubt that many of them will be coming to Wikipedia. Just my opinion.

Stressed? Yes. Told my wife in the last few days that I'm tired of this waste of time and I'm losing my enthusiasm for this site. This man, who is an admin, has engaged in an edit war, over an issue for which he has little or no support. He changed, I changed, he changed, I changed, he changed, and I sought mediation to avoid the war. When you stated that "WP:IUP#Displayed_image_size (which I checked) says that, generally, one should use the thumb option to display images, but you can set it manually to 200-250 pixels.", and William Thweatt said (in reference to the book cover image that Mel deleted) "I agree with Roger's interpretation of fair-use in this case. We use it similarly in musician-related articles by including scans of album covers in the article covering the artists as long as the album is discussed/mentioned at some point in the article.", I re-introduced the deleted image and resized the others, with the comment that it was within Wikipedia's guidelines. Mel reverted my edits with the simple comment "see talk", as if the matter was closed on the authority of his previous comments. So I left you my comment about 'if not mediation, then arbitration', 'cause I'm fed up.

My reasons for setting pixel size can also be found at the peer review discussion page. That's where I thought comments would be made in reply to my request for peer review. It has to do with formatting for the aesthetic factor, both here on the site and in print. Have a look at this article: "The Lady of Shalot". After Mel insisted on thumb-size, the editors of the article increased it's pixel size, probably because Mel had not been there for some time. Why did they do it? Because thumb-size was not acceptable (in their opinion) for the display of the image. An aesthetic decision. An editorial decision. A correct decision for the display of such an image.

I'm not concerned much about Mel blocking me. My edits here in Wikipedia can be seen by all who want to. I contribute in good faith and am proud of the work I've done. If he were to block me, I'm afraid he would be making a mistake.

I'm not interested in trying to maintain any conversation with the man. His attitude is, in my opinion, that of a god to whom I should bow, and I won't. I don't believe that he cares to discuss, he dictates. --RogerK 03:07, 10 June 2006 (UTC)

A short Esperanzial update

As you may have gathered, discussions have been raging for about a week on the Esperanza talk page as to the future direction of Esperanza. Some of these are still ongoing and warrant more input (such as the idea to scrap the members list altogether). However, some decisions have been made and the charter has hence been amended. See what happened. Basically, the whole leadership has had a reshuffle, so please review the new, improved charter.

As a result, we are electing 4 people this month. They will replace JoanneB and Pschemp and form a new tranche A, serving until December. Elections will begin on 2006-07-02 and last until 2006-07-09. If you wish to run for a Council position, add your name to the list before 2006-07-02. For more details, see Wikipedia:Esperanza/June 2006 elections.

In view of your ostensible preference for Brazil, I'm considering changing my support to oppose; even as I admire the style Brazil often play, and even as they remain my pick to win (over Argentina in the final, having overcome England after extra time in the semifinals), notwithstanding that I think England to be a slightly better side (I assess the teams to be equal in the back and front but give England a most minor advantage in the midfield), they're only third on my list of teams for whom to cheer. You will need to redirect your allegiance, irrespective of your residence, lest I should oppose. If you can't do that, might you at least change your age? subst: seems to work. But it's weird. The last time I did subst, it didn't work... By the way, do you know how to make a template autosubst when subst'ed in another template? For example:

I want to put {{CURRENTDATE}} on one of my test templates. So how would I get {{CURRENTDATE}} to subst for me? Obviously the following would not work very well:

{{<includeonly>subst:</includeonly>CURRENTDATE}}

but it's the only logical solution I can think of. Any ideas?

Program Feature: To-Do List The Esperanza To-Do List is a place where you may list any request, big or small, for assistance. If you need help with archiving your usertalk, for example, all you need to do is list it here and somebody will help you out. Likewise, if you need help with some area of editing on Wikipedia, list it here! Again, any matter, trivial or not, can be placed on this page. However, all matters listed on this page must not be of an argumentative nature. You do not need to be a member of Esperanza (or this program) to place or fulfill requests on this page. If you don't have any requests, consider coming by and fulfilling a few! This program has not been very active, but has lots of potential! What's New? In order to help proposed programs become specific enough to make into full-fledged programs, the In development section of the proposals page has been created. Proposals that are promising, but need to be organized in more detail are listed here. Please take a look at what is there, and help the proposals turn into programs. To improve both the layout and text of the front page, in an attempt to clarify the image of Esperanza, the front page is going to have some redesigning take place. Redirects

Hey, thanks for the suggestion. That would be a lot easier. However, Wikipedia:Double redirects states it is better to change redirects to avoid having *any* redirects at all, and during page moves prior to this, I've been told to do it that way. Of course, that was almost nine months ago and I really haven't been active on Wikipedia since January, so if there has been a change in policy, I wouldn't know about it. In actuality, I doubt there's an actual policy, but Wikipedia:Double redirects says to do this:

• Suppose page title A redirects to B which in turn redirects to C.
• Follow a link to A. You will see a page containing: (a) the page title B; (b) a large link to C; (c) a very small notice in the corner saying "redirected from A".
• Click the "A" in "redirected from A".
• You will see a page containing: (a) the page title A; (b) a large link to B.
• Click "Edit this page" and change B to C.

Unless my logic is flawed (which it might be, it's still early in the morning in Hawaii), that means to go to the original link and change the link directly to the page's new location. I was told that this was preferred because it would help conserve Wikipedia's resources in the long run.

However, I realize now I could've saved a lot of trouble (I fixed about two hundred redirects in this fashion) by simply putting a request to change the redirects to User:Werdnabot/Double-redirect bypass requests.

Actually, I understood it like this: according to the instructions available, page A redirects to page B (because when you go to page A, you end up at page B), which in turn directs to "C" (the "C" described by the large link in question is the page that was moved, because when you go to a double-redirect, Wikipedia's servers only allow the first redirect to work, and the second redirect's target is shown as a large link. The instructions tell you to go to the *original* page A and change the link from the second redirect to the actual article (since the instructions tell you to click the link to the article "A" and and edit the link from "B" to "C"), thus skipping any redirects which in either case I think is more desirable than having to be forwarded across pages. 青い(Aoi) 20:05, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

If you don't have any requests, consider coming by and fulfilling a few! This program has not been very active, but has lots of potential! What's New? Program Feature: Barnstar Brigade Here in Wikipedia there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go unappreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go unnoticed. As Esperanzians we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. This is where the Barnstar Brigade comes in. The object of this program is to seek out the people which deserve a Barnstar, and help them feel appreciated. With your help, we can recognize more dedicated editors! What's New? September elections are upon us! Anyone wishing to be a part of the Advisory Council may list themselves as a candidate from 18 September until 24 September, with the voting taking place from 25 September to 30 September. VP Ongoing Issue

For some reason my name has been removed from the list of authorized users. I was added by Betacommand here [2], and he welcommed me here[3]. I had difficulties using it, did everything I could myself, was unable to, so I requested assistance here [4]. Instead of assistance, I was removed from the list. Because I have had difficulties on wikipedia recieving help from administrators when requested, this message is in essence a generic template I am writing on all moderators' talk pages and discussion boards in the hopes of recieving if nothing else a response - ideally, however, a solution. Program Feature: Admin Coaching (needs coaches!) Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach. Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins. What's New? The Tutorial Drive is a new Esperanza program! In an effort to make complicated processes on Wikipedia easier for everyone, Esperanza working to create and compile a list of tutorials about processes here on Wikipedia. Consider writing one!
