Commons cats

[edit]

I haven't looked into how to move Commons Categories. [1] exists, but without the comma does not. We need to figure this out before eliminating those final pesky commas. Dicklyon (talk) 05:35, 16 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I hadn't considered it. I'll leave them be in that case. Fdssdf (talk) 07:01, 16 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

WP:JR fixes

[edit]

Hi there, thanks for the help on this conversion. In cases such as this one, it's better to go ahead and move the target per WP:JR, submitting a request for uncontroversial technical move at WP:RM if the "to" name already exists as a redirect. Once the move is completed, you don't need to pipe the link. I've done that for this one (no redirect existed, so I could just move it myself). Also it's good to link to WP:JR in your edit summary where appropriate, just so you don't get reverted by the unaware (and this applies to ALL Wikipedia editing imo). Thanks again. ―Mandruss  12:42, 16 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I just remove the comma and look at the preview. If there's a red link, then I know I can move the target; if not, either there's a redirect or it's already moved, so you can ignore that path. Only in one case this didn't quite work, since someone had Donkey Kong, Jr. and Donkey Kong Jr. as distinct articles (the character and the game); that took some sorting out, since a lot of links started out wrong, too. Dicklyon (talk) 14:22, 16 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I do the red-link check Dicklyon referred to. I thought it was a red link when I checked it. As for moving: Even for uncontroversial moves, I will leave that to people who are better acquainted with it than I am. I had considered linking to the policy in my summaries, and I'm not sure why I didn't and don't. I think I will henceforth. Cheers. Fdssdf (talk) 16:20, 16 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, those edit summary links are also a good way to spread knowledge about guidelines, which benefits the project. I've learned a ton about the guidelines (and policies) by reading the situation-specific information in those links. I'm a painfully slow reader, so I don't generally go wading through p&g for the sake of general learning; I learn it better piecemeal, and I suspect I'm not alone. ―Mandruss  16:28, 16 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Please change your edit summary. The Jr./Sr. comma thing is part of MOS, which is a guideline and not policy, so please say "guideline" instead of "policy" in your summaries. Thanks. BMK (talk) 22:07, 19 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, BMK. I agree. Thanks for the heads-up. Fdssdf (talk) 22:20, 19 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. BMK (talk) 03:32, 20 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

F, the commons cat links don't turn red when broken. If you change them you need to check them. Dicklyon (talk) 03:35, 20 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the information, Dick. Luckily, I stopped altering them, but I'll go back and try and find ones I broke. Fdssdf (talk) 04:43, 20 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Or if you get ambitious you can investigate what it takes to move commons categories. Or make cat redirects there. I haven't looked into that, but did notice an existing category redirect on one Jr. name at least. Dicklyon (talk) 05:06, 20 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
