Coax cable image

Hello. You recently replaced the thumbnail image on the coaxial cable page, changing it from a PNG to a JPG. I'm not complaining, I'm just wondering why? Maybe there is something about the inner working of Wikimedia I'm not aware of. Thanks. GyroMagician (talk) 11:53, 16 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your help with György Petri

Thanks for your help with the picture for that article and for adding his works to the year-in-poetry pages. There's no way you would have known this, and it isn't a big deal, but I try to limit the country subsection headings to those countries where we have at least three works on the year page. If not, I put works from other countries in the "Other languages" sections. I haven't always been consistant with that, and what you did won't do any harm unless the same type of thing happens again and again, with editors making one-item subsections for all sorts of countries. That's extremely unlikely, but I mention this just in case you want to add more in the future to those pages (which would be great). (None of this has ever been put to a consensus, so there's nothing even wrong with what you did -- I'm just making a suggestion.) Thanks again, JohnWBarber (talk) 15:43, 19 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Possibly unfree File:Assandun-sign.jpg

A file that you uploaded or altered, File:Assandun-sign.jpg, has been listed at Wikipedia:Possibly unfree files because its copyright status is unclear or disputed. Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Sli ready.jpg

Thank you for uploading File:Sli ready.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 15:33, 21 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

superseded non-free SVGs

Hi! A small suggestion: nominate superseded non-free files for deletion with {{db-f5}} right away, rather than using {{vva}} (as on File:National Socialist Dutch Workers Party logo.png). Such images will have to be deleted anyway, sooner or later. —Quibik (talk) 12:33, 2 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi cheers, yeah I'll defiantly do that from now on, I didn't think that once the SG version replaced the non-free raster ones would need to be deleted, thanks for pointing that out to me, cant believe I didn't notice! Fallschirmjäger 11:08, 6 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Rex Mundi (music artist) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a band or musician, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for musical topics. You may also wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. 19th century Icelandic standard

Fallschirmjäger,

I saw your request at the Illustration workshop about File:Gunnfáni.svg and couldn't help notice that flag is near identical to the Saint Patrick's saltire. On List of flags of Iceland this standard is described as the "Standard of the Vestmannaeyjar Battalion" Vestmannaeyjar itself is an island named after Irish slaves (a "Westman" being the Norse word for an Irishman).

We are always on the lookout for more details on Saint Patrick's saltire, which has a shadowy history in Ireland itself. If you have any more details on this or ideas of places I could go for more details, I would be very grateful.

Regards, --RA (talk) 09:17, 10 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi RA, thanks for the info, I had no idea the flags were so similar! There does indeed seem to be a link with Vestmannaeyjar and Ireland, for them both to have the same symbol. Unfortunately I can't tell you any more on the topic, I'm interested in the history of Iceland but as of yet I've not come across any further evidence as to support the origins of the saltire.
As for places to look for more information, I've dug around my university's vast library of material and couldn't find anything that isn't already sourced in the Saint Patrick's saltire article. I wish I could be of more use and shed more light on its history, if I come across anything in the future I'll be sure to let you know, but thanks again. Fallschirmjäger 13:02, 10 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks very much for taking a look. The coincidence at least did lead me to a source a reference for a etymology of the word "Ireland" that I had suspected but never seen a reference for: the Irish word for west is iarthar, the adjective of which is thiar (pronounced something mid-way between ear and air in English). An etymology of Ireland is thus thiar-land, "west land". --RA (talk) 13:36, 10 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again, and thanks for asking. I think the document looks fine as is, and I agree with you that historic documents should be left pretty 'unretouched.' Thanks again for your help. Best, MarmadukePercy (talk) 22:16, 30 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Watermarks on oil paintings

Thanks for your help with the diploma, and I hope I'm not out-of-line asking for your opinion about this image.[1] I uploaded it from a commercial site, which I hardly ever do. Are watermarks like this removable? Thanks again. Best, MarmadukePercy (talk) 02:08, 31 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Of course not, I welcome your question. Its fine from a commerical site, I too am guilty of doing the same every now and then, there is no problem with it as the paintings copyright has expired ;). That type of watermark is rather tricky but I would say it is possible to remove yes, I've certainly attempted much worse ones than that. I'll have a go at it today.  Fallschirmjäger    09:21, 31 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Done - Ok I've uploaded a new version with the watermark removed, how does it look?  Fallschirmjäger    12:25, 31 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Black & White

On the Pokemon video game articles, only one of the two initial versions' box art is used in the infobox, and it is always the first named version (Red, Gold, Ruby, FireRed, Diamond, HeartGold). The other articles don't even include the boxart for the 3rd versions. That is why I have put the White version boxart up for deletion. Thank you for creating File:Severe weather montage.jpg, one thing you should always do is source the images used and license the montage under the what ever image has the strictest licensing (One image you used was Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 2.5). It is always best to use the same licensed images to use in montage as you don't have the confusion as what happened with File:Severe weather montage.jpg. Cologne Cathedral

Can I just ask why you dropped in a beautiful panorama in an appropriate place, and then removed it again, as soon as I tidied up and removed a different image that had been rendered redundant? Is there a problem with the panorama? Amandajm (talk) 13:28, 18 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No there is no problem with it, infact it is currently being nominated as a featured picture candidate here. It wasn't my desire to remove the image but discussions over at WP:FPC debated the encyclopedic value of the image in the article. There is conflicting views, one opinion expressed is that the image should be included in all relevant articles where a significant structure appears in the panorama, hence why it was included in the first place. While another view states that it's a very nice image but was believed to not warrant signifcant value in terms of the cathedral article which therefore resulted in its removal. Make your own judgement, the more opinions on the matter the better, if you feel the image deserves a place then do as you see fit. Regards  Fallschirmjäger    13:52, 18 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

replacing

I see that you work in the Graphic Lab/Photography workshop. Among actual top 4 requests there's one that's not worth working on it (deleting the watermark = recontructing the back of the ship). I think it would be easier to replace the actual photo with one we could get from this page. New one hasn't got any watermark and it would be in higher resolution. The only problem is I don't know how to get the permission (maybe someone has already got one but I don't know where to find it) and I have never tried to get one before. There's another problem, my Enlish sucks really. Could you please help me? Thanks. Vearthy (talk) 22:30, 24 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thanks for your efforts in the graphics lab. It seems that Quibik has already worked on the image but the version you have found is of higher quality so replacing it would indeed be ideal. I will look into trying to find a way of obtaining the image. Oh and by the way your English is very good! Regards  Fallschirmjäger    08:49, 25 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

AGF

Hi - you just posted a speedy deletion nomination on my talk page, and referenced A7. A7 clearly states "An article about a real person, individual animal(s), organization (e.g. band, club, company, etc., except schools), or web content that does not indicate why its subject is important or significant. " My article does this quite obviously - could you explain why you nominated it? I know that this is a problem that a lot of people mis-nominate articles; is that what happened here? Tduk (talk) 19:54, 21 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I nominated the article because its fails to satisfy the criteria of CSD A7. Thank your for your contributions to wikipedia but unfortunately at this stage I'm afraid your article doesn't "quite obviously" explain why the band are notable. They may have gained media coverage but why? What makes the band so significant from all the other bands out there, have they won any awards or been featured on prominant radio shows or any other kind of signifcant coverage? If you added some detail to make the bands significance obvious then it would certainly have a place on Wikipedia. Your first reference on the page reverbnation.com doesn't support the claim of "significant media coverage" as this is just a site for amateur bands to post a profile, it isn't a credible media source but your NY Daily News reference is certainly a worthy source but that article only explains about the bands style, not why they are an important band. As a side note, I also agree with Whose Your Guy's views at the article's discussion page. Regards,  Fallschirmjäger    10:32, 22 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Graphic Lab/Illustration Workshop Top 4

Hi, from what I can see, you're usually the person who updates the Top 4 images needing work at the Graphic Lab. I was just wondering firstly whether only specific people are allowed to do this? If anyone can, then:

  • what are the criteria for picking new images?
  • do the uploaded images need to be checked, with links made to pages/templates updated etc?

I ask because I've been getting involved recently and have sometimes finished the group. At this point, I could refresh it with new images for others to get involved in...but don't want to wade in without knowing protocol!

Thanks, Serenthia 19:01, 8 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hey! No of course not anyone can, feel free to contribute ;). Thanks for yor interest and efforts towards the project. I'm just usually the one who gets round to updating it most often.
There isn't any set criteria that we go by but generally as a rule of thumb try to pick new images that are already being used in an article or ones that are used a fair amount on other projects. If you're getting images for the illustration workshop my first port of call usually is Commons:Category:Images that should use vector graphics and from this I try and choose a mixture of image types. However if you come across any image in a article that could use vectorizing then use that if you want.
With regards to picking images there is a few things to keep in mind:
  • Firstly make sure the file is properly licensed and ok to work on (basically not copyrighted). Non-free files can be worked on in normal requests in the lab but only using the GLNF template but unfortunately this doesn't work with the top 4 template so stick to free files.
  • Make sure that the request is reasonable and won't take a excessive amount of work.
  • Ensure that the image can actually be vectorised.
Also before changing the current top 4, wait till they have all been completed or until they have been displayed for over 2 days, whichever occurs first. Then proceed to archive them before adding your 4 new files.
When a file has been completed first check the request has been fulfilled properly. Next check that the new SVG is used to replace the old bitmap version that is used in any articles. Also add a vva template to the bitmap file and remove the convert to svg template if it has one.
Hopefully I answered most of your questions but if not please don't hesitate to ask! Regards,  Fallschirmjäger    20:41, 8 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That's really helpful - thanks! I carry out all those checks on files I upload anyway (in fact, just spent a while going back through all of them to make sure everything's been covered - I'm very particular!) You might start to see some tentative updates from me....please do let me know if I get anything wrong :o) Serenthia 21:08, 8 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much! their height just need to be lowered at the same "capitain" version because if you check here they appear higher than the other ones! Thank you again. --Nicola Romani (talk) 11:53, 4 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Top 4 requests

Hi,

Could you please add Wikipedia:Graphic Lab/Photography workshop#Maxim_Gorky to the top 4 instead of having two pairs of the same image for watermark removal, as every top 4 request since I can remember is for watermark removal, watermark removal, watermark removal. - ʄɭoʏɗiaɲ τ ¢ 21:20, 29 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No problem, I've added it to the top 4. The reason the top 4 is always watermark removals is because they are meant to be quick requests that can all be completed within 48 hours and there is a backlog of 8,000+ files with watermarks alone and are not normal requests, their purpose is to be filled with such files. The Maxin Gorky image will require a significant amount of time to work on and therefore images like this aren't normally used in the top 4 but since its been left stale for some time hopefully it will have more attention paid to it there. Regards,  Fallschirmjäger    21:38, 29 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ah. Makes sense, but (in my opinion at least) you should also try to grab items that look like they are going stale. Gives them a better shot of being noticed instead of forgotten. Cheers. - ʄɭoʏɗiaɲ τ ¢ 22:05, 29 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It would be great if the top 4 were updated after all of the goals are fulfilled. If it's not done in 48 hour shouldn't we wait a bit longer? That's just wrong putting in archive undone requests. Vearthy (talk) 18:38, 30 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed but waiting for one file which gets ignored because it requires a large amount of work holds up the top 4, which is efficient at working through a backlog of simpler requests. I always leave the top 4 for a resonable duration, if I perceive a file has a good chance of being worked on I will leave it over 48 hours, which is no hard fast rule. However as was the case with the Maxim Gorky image it would require several hours of work and therefore very few wikigraphists, out of the few that are regularly active, will be willing to work on it. Many people who contribute to the top 4 only do so because requests are easy and quick and don't always work on the regular requests. I know its not good to put unfulfilled requests into the archive so in future I think all top 4 requests should be simple so they have a good chance of being done, things that will take longer are best left for the normal procedure of request posting.  Fallschirmjäger    19:51, 30 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Why did you listen to Florydian then? In such situation I think it's better to replace harder task with something easier. Vearthy (talk) 22:24, 30 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I agree and in future I shall stick to the normal working procedure. I merely wished to politely fulfill Floydian's request, which perhaps I should have given more consideration as I didn't realise how much work was needed on the image and moved it to the top 4 without realising this. Regards,  Fallschirmjäger    22:43, 30 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
You did that again... Couldn't you fulfill the request yourself? Just throwing it away to archives doesn't make any sense... Vearthy (talk) 20:38, 6 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Only because it had been left for over 3 days and it was purposely left because it is more challenging. I realise it is not ideal but it's no different really to normal requests which go stale and then being archived. Unfortunately it can't be left there forever as that one file is holding up the backlog of 8,000 files and growing, so there has to come a point to move on. Plus it isn't just me that has done this, if you look through the archives of the top 4 since it started other users followed the same practice. Plus most of the time all requests are completed, its only rarely that one is left. If you disagree feel free to voice your opinion on the top 4's talkpage where it will receive more feedback.
