Controversy about the Compagnie Franche de la Marine

[edit]

Good evening to all,

first of all, sorry for my english but I'm french.

I've been for several years looking for the truthfulness of this flag, and unfortunately I didn't find what I expected.

I've been reading severals "Ordonnance du Roy" (king Loui XIV or until the end of the CFM) specificating uniforms, flags and constitution of regiments and navy troupes such as CFM. These lasts didn't have a specific flag, wich is "normal" because Compagnies Franches (Free companies) wasn't part of the regular army, they were not enlist in a regiment or will never be a regiment. A Compagnie Franche, is by nature a companie who will be dissolved after missions accomplished, a war, a campaign... So it was not useful to give theme a flag.

In port they used the port's flag, and in colonies they might used the colonie's flag or if this one didn't have one specific, the flag of french kingdom. What is more, This (beautiful) flag is anachronism. The symbol stylized of a grenad is not used before the 18 century.

I read that this flag was design by Michel Pétard, who was born in 1944 and not contemporary of the period. I read his books about Compagnies Franches de la Marine, and he never talk about a flag.

If someone have a source of an "ordonnance du Roy" or an archeological fund it would be great ! if ther's no source about the existence of this flag during 1690 - 1761 it would be historicaly correct to create a part called "controversy about the Compagnie Franche de la Marine "

Thanks for your informations !
