Hey thanks for creating the article 1939 City of San Francisco Derailment; that was a great motivator to get me off my duff and start contributing again. Any objections to nominating it for a WP:DYK? Dave (talk) 15:59, 12 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I'm getting familiar to the Wiki format so I don't know if this the way to respond in a technical sense, but yeah. Go for it! Exiasprip (talk) 06:26, 13 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the reply. I'd like to use the picture that's in a couple of the sources of the rail car sticking up in the air. Wikipedia may be able to use some of those images as the copyright claims are suspect (how can a blog created in 200x claim copyright on an image taken in 1939?). However, I'm not an expert on copyright law. If we're lucky the publicity generated from appearing on the main page will cause someone who is more familiar with copyright law to take a look and upload a photo if appropriate. That's the good thing about trying to get your work on the main page, people like that will see it. The bad thing is the haters with axes to grind will also see it, and be sure to tell you how ignorant you are. IMO the good outweighs the bad.Dave (talk) 15:29, 13 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds good to me. I also believe I have the coordinates for it, but I'm not sure how to add them. On Google Earth, it's 40*43'22.99"N and 116*01'07.62"W. Don't know if that helps or even if it's the exact location. I used an old aerial photograph to track it. Exiasprip (talk) 19:49, 13 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I know how to add them, but I gave up on trying to determine the exact location of the wreck, so I didn't. In this view (I use acme as they have most USA rail sidings visible in the topo map view, including Harney)[1] I've activated 3 markers, left is Harney; middle is some obvious track and river relocation to reduce the curvature of the line. I don't know if that relocation was done before or after the 1939 accident. If the tracks were moved after, it's possible (and likely) the visible sharp curve in the old alignment is where it happened. However there are no bridges there now. Assuming this relocation happened before and the tracks are essentially the same today as then, the right marker is a bridge I initially suspected, of being "the one". However, I now think "the one" is more likely the bridge just to the west of the one I marked. Dave (talk) 00:58, 14 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

For me, even if we mark it wrong, I feel like someone will eventually come along and correct it. Wikimapia is saying 40°43'30"N 116°2'30"W. That can also be a temporary reference for now. But anyway, I'll leave that up. You have my grace to do whatever you need to this page. Exiasprip (talk) 02:42, 14 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I just saw the Wikimapia entry, it took me a while to find it. I'm not comfortable with using that location, it's on the wrong side of the city of Carlin from everything I understand about the accident. However, checking the user's other contributions (User:mercha283), they seem to be a fairly experienced wiki user. I'll leave them a message and ask how they know that's where it happened.Dave (talk) 05:08, 25 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. Any idea why on Wikimapia every bridge and tunnel in the area is marked with a Russian comment? I can't decide that it's cool that someone who speaks Russian has a fascination with Nevada railroads or if I should notify the FBI ;) Dave (talk) 05:10, 25 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

We might've just cracked the case! Exiasprip (talk) 17:14, 25 June 2017 (UTC):[reply]

Ha Ha! If all goes as planned, the article will be on the DYK section of the main page on July 4th (of all dates). Let's see what happens, we'll either get some help with the pictures and location or be publicly flogged. ;) I have to say I haven't nominated an article for Did You Know in many years, and wow has the process changed since I last did it. Probably for the better though. Thanks again. Dave (talk) 17:32, 1 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

That's awesome! Thanks for your work on this! Exiasprip (talk) 07:40, 3 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. At the above article, you added two entries (March 4, 1853 and May 9, 1853) which don't have references. Please add references. The entries will be removed in 48 hours if still unreferenced. Thanks for your additions. Please don't be offended. References must be supplied. Akld guy (talk) 03:50, 15 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Added it Exiasprip (talk) 04:07, 15 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I see that. Thanks. Akld guy (talk) 05:45, 15 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for 1939 City of San Francisco derailment

[edit]

On 4 July 2017, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article 1939 City of San Francisco derailment, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that despite years of investigation and a manhunt, the 1939 City of San Francisco derailment remains unsolved? You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, 1939 City of San Francisco derailment), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Question

[edit]

I noticed you made an article for the South Jordan bus crash. So I was wondering if you could make an article on the 2019 Westbury train crash in New York. Make sure to add an image and also do research on the wreck first. Coreyriffinbeastoperatorblue (talk) 21:48, 10 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I’ll look into it. As long as the mods consider it significant enough, then I’ll write it up. Did you know if there were any pictures in the Wikicommons that are relevant? Exiasprip (talk) 22:39, 10 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank You for the contributions

Just wanted to pop in and say I appreciate your contributions to the One-Hit Wonders in the United States list! I love that list and I'm glad that there is someone else very active on there as well! If I may ask, what is your favorite song that you've added thus far?

Thanks ~ Alex :) Ya Boy Alex! (talk) 18:38, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I’ve been obsessed with one-hit wonders since I was a kid. I used to contribute to a site called one-hit wonder center, but it’s gone dead since 2020. My goal is to transfer as much as that info here before their domain gets shut down for good.
There’s a lot I’m trying to add but I can’t find secondary sources besides chart history (like Don Ho’s “Tiny Bubbles”).
Was surprised no one added The Fendermen or Homer & Jethro so I corrected that! I guess those two would be my favorites I added.
I guess while this conversation, I added some points to the Talk section of the page, particularly organizing the page by acts that are confirmed as one hit wonders, versus those who are disputed to have that reputation. I would love to see A-ha on this page even with their follow-up “The Sun Always Shines on TV”.
It would be a tedious edit, and I’d do my part to research and find sources, but it would mostly serve to give a more thorough look at these acts discographies.
But that’s a decision I’ll let you consider. Will keep on researching acts for the meantime.
PS when the page’s format change from the chart form? It looked really great - I understand it was changed to accommodate acts that didn’t chart in Top 40, but I’d love to see something like that again. Exiasprip (talk) 22:34, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sweet. Thanks! Yeah, I discovered this One-Hit Wonder concept in spring of 2022 and immediately got hooked. I've done so much research on finding sources/citations for the Wikipedia list and have acquired several One-Hit Wonder books! Ya Boy Alex! (talk) 22:45, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
