Add in Biography: Mrs. Nugent, concerned that her oldest son did not intend to hold a steady job, sent him to live with his grandmother in Washington, DC, where, in 1925, her met Langston Hughes at one of Georgia Douglas Johnson’s artistic soirees. The two young men became friends, And Hughes encouraged Nugent’s creative endeavors. (page 317)
Add in Biography: Nugent’s activities as artist, performer, and commentator, he, along with Romare Bearden and others, founded the Harlem Cultural Council during the 1960s; the organization sought municipal and federal funds for the arts and played a major role in the efforts to construct a new building for the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.
