January 2019
[edit]Hello, I'm Junior5a. I wanted to let you know that I reverted one of your recent contributions —specifically this edit to Herman Karl Haeberlin— because it did not appear constructive. If you would like to experiment, please use the sandbox. If you have any questions, you can ask for assistance at the Help Desk. Thanks. ~ Junior5a (Talk) Cont 16:36, 19 January 2019 (UTC)
@Junior5a: I added categories to the page & changed Template:uncategorised to Template:morecats. Is this unconstructive?

Welcome...
[edit]To the portals project.
Thank you for joining!
The next issue of our newsletter will be coming out very soon.
You can get caught up with recent history of the portal system by reading our newsletter archive.
The main introduction to portals is Wikipedia:Portal.
For a list of all portals, see Category:All portals.
To create a new portal, place the code {{subst:bpsp}}[[Category:Category:Portals needing placement of incoming links]]
on a blank portal page, and click on Preview.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
Sincerely, — The Transhumanist 07:53, 20 January 2019 (UTC)
Wikipedia:WikiProject Portals update #026, 20 Jan 2019
[edit]Well, here's the first issue of the new year. Enjoy...
New participants
[edit]A hearty welcome to new arrivals to the portals department:
Harvesting categories tool prototype
[edit]DannyS712 has created a user script prototype, User:DannyS712/Cat links, that can pull members from a category, a functionality we've been after since the project's revamp last Spring. Now, it's a matter of applying this technique to scripts that will place the items where needed, such as in a section starter script and/or portal builder script.

What else is going on
[edit]There have been some discussions at Wikipedia talk:Portal guidelines.
DreamyJazz is working on a bot to place links to portals on root articles, category pages, and navigation footer templates.
Portal bugs are getting dealt with soon after they are reported.
Lots of wikignome activity (using Hotcat, etc.).
Keep up the good work. — The Transhumanist 08:02, 20 January 2019 (UTC)
Emoteplump, you are invited to the Teahouse!
[edit]Hi Emoteplump! Thanks for contributing to Wikipedia. We hope to see you there!

Heads up
[edit]I noticed that the Did you know section of the portals you have been creating have a different colored header.
If you want to use the main template for creating portals rather than copy/paste another portal's source code in, insert this line onto a blank page before saving:
{{subst:bpsp}}[[Category:Portals needing placement of incoming links]]
If you would like to try a more automatic method, install QuickPortal.js, but this is highly experimental. IMPORTANT: if you use this script, turn off WidEd first. I haven't distributed this script yet because WikEd makes it go into an endless loop. So, do not run it while WikEd is turned on.
What QuickPortal does is creates the portal when you click on its redlink.
I know what you are thinking: SAY WHAT?????!
Yep, so you can make a list of redlinks, and ctrl click on them, which makes one new portal per tab. Then you can inspect each tab before saving.
And unleash a portal storm.
LOL. — The Transhumanist 01:12, 27 January 2019 (UTC)
P.S.: (I've created over 2,000 portals using the thing).
P.P.S.: By changing the bpsp code, by adding "2", "3", "4", or "2-3" to it, you can get a different configuration. See Template:bpsp2, etc., for more details.
P.P.P.S.: QuickPortal also creates an experimental menu item I'm working on, called "Restart portal". It will totally wipe the current portal and start over, but it has to be pressed twice (once while on the portal), and once while on the edit page. (Or just click it while you are on the edit page). It won't work right if WikEd is on. I made "Restart portal" to help convert the old-style portals to the new model.
P.P.P.P.S.: If/when you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
- @The Transhumanist: Hi, i sub-ed the code you gave to Portal:Friends but the did you know section seems screwed up (not related to the portal's topic). Would you mind fixing it for me? ⊂Emoteplump (Contributions) (Talk) 07:26, 27 January 2019 (UTC)
The portal is about the city of Johor Bahru, but the Selected general articles section and the subtopics section are about the State of Johor.
See Portal:Johor. — The Transhumanist 11:43, 27 January 2019 (UTC)
- @The Transhumanist: perhaps the only way is to hard code it?? ⊂Emoteplump (Contributions) (Talk) 13:06, 27 January 2019 (UTC)
- Not necessarily. There might be relevant lists. Those work in place of templates for the Selected general articles section. Another option is to build a navigation footer from scratch, or an outline, or both. Or you could "hard code" by using {{Transclude excerpts as random slideshow}}. An approach that is better than listing the topics there is to list them in the Subtopics section, and then call the subtopics section from the Selected general articles section, like this:
| Portal:Johor Bahru | section1=Subtopics
- Since building lists by hand is slow, anything to speed that up is beneficial. For harvesting categories, I have the script ViewAsOutline-Category.js installed. You should try it, you might like it. That shows categories in wikicode form, so copy and paste them directly into an edit page.
- Have fun. — The Transhumanist 14:04, 27 January 2019 (UTC)
- @The Transhumanist: To be honest, I have no idea on how to use that script. HAHA. ⊂Emoteplump (Contributions) (Talk) 14:31, 27 January 2019 (UTC)
The portal looks like it is mostly about mutations (from your previous portal).
Just thought you'd like to know.
To avoid errors in copying/pasting, the code {{subst:bpsp}}
works very nicely.
I generally use it along with the category about needing links to the new portal, like this:
{{subst:bpsp}}[[Category:Portals needing placement of incoming links]]
I hope you find this tip useful.
Keep those new portals coming. You are doing a great job! — The Transhumanist 12:02, 27 January 2019 (UTC)
Done – fixed the problem :) ⊂Emoteplump (Contributions) (Talk) 13:02, 27 January 2019 (UTC)

Portal magic
[edit]If you'd like to try creating a portal in a single click, install User:The Transhumanist/QuickPortal.js, and then click on the following link:
Let me know what you think. (And remember to turn off WikEd, if you have it installed, that is). — The Transhumanist 14:13, 27 January 2019 (UTC)
- @The Transhumanist: Woah! It's easy to use man... Maybe you could modify the script by letting it detect missing sections to fit in the Template:bpsp - Template:bpsp4 automatically, so it will be easier for everyone :) ⊂Emoteplump (Contributions) (Talk) 14:27, 27 January 2019 (UTC)
- That's a good idea. Not easy to program, though. But, I'll work on it!
- I'm glad you like the program. Remember to be careful about the WikEd glitch. — The Transhumanist 22:29, 27 January 2019 (UTC)
Wikipedia:WikiProject Portals update #027, 28 Jan 2019
[edit]Portal styles
[edit]For a visually intensive portal, see Portal:Hummingbirds.
If you find any other portals that stand out, please send me the links so I can include them in the next issue. Thank you.
Conversion continues
[edit]There are about 1100 portals left in the old style, with subpages and static excerpts. As those are very labor intensive to maintain (because their maintenance is manual), all those except the ones with active maintainers (about 100) are slated for upgrade = approximately 1000. We started with 1500, and so over a quarter of them have been processed so far. That's good, but at this rate, conversion will take another 3 years. So, some automation (AWB?) is in order. We just need to keep at it, and push down on the gas pedal a bit harder.
You can find the old-style portals with an insource search of "box portal skeleton".
Speaking of upgrades...
The following portals are listed in the header at the top of Wikipedia's Main Page, and get far more traffic than all other portals:
- Portal:Arts
- Portal:Biography
- Portal:Geography
- Portal:History
- Portal:Mathematics
- Portal:Science
- Portal:Society
- Portal:Technology
Of those, all but one have been revamped to an automated self-updating single-page design.
The remaining one, Portal:Mathematics has manual maintainers, and has been partially upgraded.
As these are our flagship fleet, they need to be kept in top-notch condition.
Check 'em out, and improve them if you can.
And be sure they are on your watchlist.

Deorphanizing the new portals
[edit]As you know, thousands of the new portals are orphans, that is, having no links to them from article space. For all practical purposes, that means they are not part of the encyclopedia yet, and readers will be unlikely to find them.
What is needed are links to these portals from the See also sections of the corresponding root articles.
Dreamy Jazz to the rescue...
Dreamy Jazz has created a bot to place the corresponding category link to the end of each portal (if it is missing), and place a link to each portal in the See also section of the corresponding root articles.
That bot, named User:Dreamy Jazz Bot, is currently in its trial period performing the above described edits!
To take a look at the edits it has made so far, see Special:Contributions/Dreamy_Jazz_Bot.
It shouldn't be long before the bot is processing the entire set of new portals.
Good news indeed.
Way to go, Dreamy Jazz!
And, that's a wrap
[edit]That's all I have to report this time around.
No doubt there will be more to tell soon.
Until then, — The Transhumanist 13:11, 28 January 2019 (UTC)
