Article Licensing
Hi, I've started the Free the Rambot Articles Project which has the goals of getting users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to...
- ...all U.S. state, county, and city articles...
- ...all articles...
using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) version 1.0 and 2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to the GFDL (which every contribution made to Wikipedia is licensed under), but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles (See the Multi-licensing Guide for more information). Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. So far over 90% of people who have responded have done this.
- Nutshell: Wikipedia articles can be shared with any other GFDL project but open/free projects using the incompatible Creative Commons Licenses (e.g. WikiTravel) can't use our stuff and we can't use theirs. It is important to us that other free projects can use our stuff. So we use their licenses too.
To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual template (or MultiLicensePD for public domain) into their user page, but there are other templates for other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:
- Option 1
- I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
- DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual
OR
- Option 2
- I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
- DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual
Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual with MultiLicensePD. If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know at my talk page what you think. It's important to know, even if you choose to do anything so I don't keep asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk) 14:38, 3 December 2004 (UTC)
"Proprietary" games
Please don't take this as an attack, but can I ask why there is a category "proprietary games" that you are putting listings into? Presuming it means non-open source, that's going to be an enormous category (i.e. nearly every game ever released), and I think that's a bad idea.
If that's not what it means, could you explain it? Thanks! --Tubedogg 05:29, 27 December 2004 (UTC)
Sorry for not replying sooner. You have the right idea with respect to the purpose of the category. I have temporarily stopped putting articles into this category because you brought up this point. However, enormous categories are not necessarily bad; for example see Category:People. Thank you for being especially polite. --Ellmist 05:40, 27 Dec 2004 (UTC)
- True, though in Category:People, they are sorted into sub-categories...maybe instead of assigning games directly to Category:Proprietary software games we should assign game genre categories to it. The only problem with that is it doesn't (presently) differentiate between proprietary and open source, but are there really that many open-source games? I can't think of any off the top of my head. --Tubedogg 06:15, 27 December 2004 (UTC)
Genre subcategories are a great idea when there is an obvious genre. --Ellmist 06:19, 27 December 2004 (UTC)
Could you please direct your efforts on Open Source/Proprietary SW somewhere else but Games? There is no specific purpose towards categorising games in these two specific ones, other than Open Source/Proprietary. This would mean that 99.9% of all games would enter into Proprietary games. It might make more sense to only have a specific category of Open Source games.BFunk 08:48, 27 December 2004 (UTC)
My own suggestion
I also noticed the category. Aside from being a lot of work, it's terribly inspecific. Games such as Monopoly or Risk are also proprietary. If you wish to continue categorizing computer games by their licence, I would suggest using a category named Category:Proprietary software games as an analogue to Category:Free software games. Just my thoughts. Otherwise, you should consider putting the category up for deletion.
You have convinced me to rename the category to Category:Proprietary software games. --Ellmist 05:57, 27 December 2004 (UTC)
- I still think the category does not belong at all because it is almost entirely, if I may be so frank, useless. Moreover, the very definition of a "proprietary game" is unclear. For example, Doom is both open-source and proprietary! It is open-source because the code to the engine is released under the GPL, which is for all intents and purposes the entire code of the game, yet Doom is proprietary because the WAD file that contains the game content is protected by copyright under a non-free license. What exactly do you hope to accomplish by making a category of proprietary computer games? For example, why not just make a category of video games, period? 99.9% of the games there would be proprietary, making a separate category for proprietary games seem rather silly. Moreover, who would benefit from this category? Nobody I can think of. So why bother? - furrykef (Talk at me) 07:31, 28 December 2004 (UTC)
Sorry that it took so long to reply. I agree that this category should be deleted because the response has been overwhelmingly negative and the viewpoints respectable. --Ellmist 06:14, 1 January 2005 (UTC)
My suggestion too
I think that it would make more sense to have the general category Category:Computer games have a subcategory Category:Open-source computer games. Information that a particular game is proprietary is simply not very useful, while information that the game is OSS can be useful. Paranoid 16:30, 27 December 2004 (UTC)
- Without reply from Ellmist I propose reverting all his edits and removing the proprietary games category. BFunk 13:02, 29 December 2004 (UTC)
Swedish County maps
Hi! I just noticed your comment on my talk page about the map of Gävleborg county. Your concerns are quite apt but seem to have been already acted upon. Wikipedia copyright policy has been satisfactory clarified since I uploaded these images (which was some year ago, and they were never really used anywhere), so they are now utterly useless to the project and should be deleted. As far as I can see, this has also been done. -- Jao 10:07, 18 January 2005 (UTC)
Thank you, Jao. --Ellmist 02:42, 23 January 2005 (UTC)
Hey there! Can I just check if you intend to work more images into this category or if have just set things in motion for other editors to contribute? It was just a bit weird for me to see my photo so near to the President! –– Constafrequent (talk page) 02:18, 29 January 2005 (UTC)
Yes, both. I will add images in the future, and others may as well. --Ellmist 21:07, 29 January 2005 (UTC)
Hi Ellmist. I've just reverted your addition of category "Images of people" to a picture of a dog, which shows a small part of a person in the background. Firstly I wonder if it would be better to restrict the category to pictures where people is the main subject (that would still probably be an enormous number of pictures) but failing that at least the fact of a person is shown. DJ Clayworth
I'm sorry about that. I agree with your reversion. Thank you. --Ellmist 22:11, 29 January 2005 (UTC)
software-screenshot
I see on Image:Awb.jpg you changed the copyright from screenshot to software-screenshot. Nice! I did not even know that existed. Where did that come from? It is not even listed in the list of copyright tags. AlexTheMartian 01:06, 14 February 2005 (UTC)
I just made that tag. I have added it to the list you mentioned. Have a nice day. --Ellmist 01:13, 14 February 2005 (UTC)

Issac Asimov --> Isaac Asimov
Just looking for some education. There seem to be two pages named "Issac Asimov", both in article mainspace. You created one as a redirect to the other. May I ask why? And how can this even be? — Xiongtalk 23:17, 2 April 2005 (UTC)
Oh, dear, I'm so embarassed. And I used to know the difference, too. But when I went looking for it, I couldn't even see it. I had to flip back and forth between the two links you gave me to spot it. And to think I consider myself his fan. {blush} Well, I'll just go over my recent edits and see if I can't clean up my mess. Thank You! — Xiongtalk 21:53, 3 April 2005 (UTC)
I realise your intentions are good, but it gets pretty damned annoying to have people with no apparent intention of helping resolve this ongoing situation dropping umpteen template messages on talk pages and expecting us to pull a solution out of thin air. We've been trying to work out how we can deal with the idiosyncracies of Australian copyright law in this area (concerning official photographs of politicians) for months. If you've got any ideas, please let us know...else please leave us alone. Ambi 05:18, 10 April 2005 (UTC)
- It's from the parliamentary website, just as nearly every single other picture of an Australian federal parliamentarian is. Such a surprise. Ambi 05:32, 10 April 2005 (UTC)
Hi Ellmist, thanks for the query, does the updated info satisfy your requirement. Richard Harvey 16:32, 11 April 2005 (UTC)
Houston, we have a problem...
I've been told that one cannot legally release ones works "into the public domain" (see Wikipedia:Granting work into the public domain), so I've added two "free use" licenses to my licensing statement. Not sure what you'd like to do with this information. - dcljr 17:48, 11 April 2005 (UTC)
Capitalization of Headings
Upon looking at the history of Wikipedia:Manual of Style (headings) it would appear that you originally wrote the manual of style section on headings within pages. In that section you said that headings follow the rule, "Capitalize the first word and any proper nouns in headlines, but leave the rest lower case." That sentiment is still expressed in that section of the Manual of Style to this day. To my mind it is incorrect in that it deviates from normal English language usage.
About a month ago I posted on the talk page of that section of the Manual of Style asking for someone to post a reference that supports the way that the Manual of Style is written. In that time period no one has done so. Today I had a look around the web and I found that the Government Printing Office's style manual directly contradicts what you said there. To quote section 3.39 of The United States Government Print Office Style Manual 2000:
"3.39. All principal words are capitalized in titles of addresses, articles, books, captions, chapter and part headings, editorials, essays, headings, headlines, motion pictures and plays (including television and radio programs), papers, short poems, reports, songs, subheadings, subjects, and themes. The foregoing are also quoted." [bolding of relevant words is mine]
So, with that manual of style, my education, and the usage in texts that I read contradicting what you said, and also the fact that no one has actually cited a manual of style that supports the text you posted I feel I have a strong case to change that part of the Manual of Style. Please let me know where you got the sentiment of that sentence you originally wrote from. David Newton 17:30, 9 April 2005 (UTC)
- Further, to quote the Chicago Manual of Style, 14th Edition:
- "In regular title capitalization, also known as headline style, the first and last words and all nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, and subordinating conjunctions (if, because, as, that, etc.) are capitalized. Articles (a, an, the), coordinating conjunctions (and, but, or, for, nor), and prepositions, regardless of length, are lowercased unless they are the first or last word of the title..."
- That is certainly contrary to the text in the Wikipedia manual of style. David Newton 17:47, 9 April 2005 (UTC)
- Not my discussion, but I'll weigh in if you don't mind: Ever since I knew of any Wikipedia standard for headings (almost two years) it's been to capitalize only the first word (and any proper nouns, of course). Changing it now would only cause chaos. Who said we have to follow the Chicago Manual of Style? On a personal note, on my own website I've used the only-first-word style ever since I began in 1995... Then again, I also put punctuation "outside of quotes", so... you know... I'm not one to slavishly follow conventions. - dcljr 19:29, 11 April 2005 (UTC)

Hi - I made a list of users who've been around long enough to have made lots of edits but aren't admins. If you're at all interested in becoming an admin, can you please add an '*' immediately before your name in this list? I've suggested folks nominating someone might want to puruse this list. Arthur Wellesley image
Ellmist, Hi. A little while ago you requested info regarding this image, which I provided, See item a couple of articles up.
.
I now seem to be having a problem with a sysop and another user, both of whom appear to have a history together, in that they keep removing the image from the page, see page history. I assume to have their own POV only, there are a number of reverts already today by them. Could you take a look and see if there is anything wrong with the image, that makes it unfit for the page:- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Wellesley%2C_8th_Duke_of_Wellington . It was at the top but after their multiple reverts and comments on the discussion page I am reluctant to put it back. (3RR Policy). I note from user:proteus discussion page, he is knowledgable but prone to be heavy handed. Thanks. Richard Harvey 18:00, 5 July 2005 (UTC)
- Hi, Thanks for getting back to me.
User:John_Kenney has taken offence at the image which had an the name rank and title of the 8th Duke as part of the photo. He has now taken the original photo and cropped it, re-uploaded it with a different name and inserted it back into the article. If you take a look at the history and discussion page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Valerian_Wellesley%2C_8th_Duke_of_Wellington , you can follow what has gone on. User:John_Kenney appears to want to change the title of the 8th Duke to his ' The Most Noble' when it is officialy ' His Grace' (NB: I work with / for the 8th Duke, so I think I should know what his title is). Having the image with the title on upsets User:John_Kenney plans so he is trying to change things for his own preferred version of a page, rather than accept the NPOV and fact. In any event his alteration of the original image is a violation of the originally uploaded image, which technically is Crown Copyright. I am also offended by the comments by John Kenny on the discussion page, directed at me. I would like to think that the contribution I have made to Wikipedia have been of use, so I don't deserve to 'wished away', or intimidated. by a user, or a sysop. I have also uploaded images of the 6th and 7th Dukes which also have their name etc in the photo's, so I now wonder if John Kenny will want to start changing those as well. Richard Harvey 10:04, 7 July 2005 (UTC)
- The change of copyright tag is useful, thank you. I have put a deletion request on:-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Request_for_immediate_removal_of_copyright_violation. Richard Harvey 10:41, 7 July 2005 (UTC)
- I now appear to be getting personal abuse from user:John Kenny on my talk page and on the 8th Dukes discussion page IE:
You are completely disgusting, you know that? The original version of the image which you uploaded didn't have the caption on it. The version I put up was exactly the same as the image which you originally put up and said was fine to use so long as we didn't defame the Duke. You do not get to win an argument by default. Until you put back up the version of the image without the caption, I am going to keep the image out of the article. john k 15:18, 7 July 2005 (UTC)
I assume that this user is a sysop and as such should not be allowed to act this way. Richard Harvey 15:41, 7 July 2005 (UTC)
As this is the message placed on my talk page by [user: John Kenny]] I can only assume that he is being personally offensive and immature.

Additional comments from user:John Kenny like this:-
I said on the description page that if you didn't like it, I would delete it, you asshole. You are a completely absurd person, fuck you. john k 15:05, 7 July 2005 (UTC)
BTW, the caption is not part of the image, and you don't get to decide the caption for an image just because you upload the image. Your version of the image is not going to be in the article. john k 15:11, 7 July 2005 (UTC)
Also from the page history list:-

This sort of personal attack from a Sysop is very damaging to the Wikipedia name. Richard Harvey 16:13, 7 July 2005 (UTC)
I also now note that he is working his way through, and deleting, images I have uploaded to other pages, such as those of the 6th and 7th Duke of Wellington Pages. ~~

Hi seeing your interest in books and novels (and prior envolvement with this project), I was wondering if you might like to get envolved with our as yet small (revitalised) WikiProject. Being a small group currently there is plenty of scope for influencing things and making your contribution count. We are about establishing standards for Novel based articles and writing articles that meet our own and others high standards, and to improve Wikipedia's diet of articles on Fiction books, otherwise called Novels. Please be very welcome. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page) 11:47, 24 January 2006 (UTC)

Using (sic) to mark deliberate errors or misspellings.
Sometime ago in 2003 User:Ellmist wrote that he preferred to use the existing word (sic) to mark deliberate errors, rather than invent a new one. So far so good.
Suppose that a spelling corrector person was searching for words so marked, with the view to correcting those that were of a temporary nature. Unfortunately the wikipedia search function on the left hand side of the screen ( Alt-F ) picks up a lot of stray matches such the Latin word sic, and the string s-i-c embedded in other words such as b-a-s-i-c and P-e-p-s-i-c-o!
What can be done about this, ie to reduce the number of spurious matches?

Fair use rationale for Image:Backup screenshot.jpg
Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Backup screenshot.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. —Angr 18:14, 13 September 2007 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Screenshot of iTunes 5 on Windows XP.png)
Thanks for uploading Image:Screenshot of iTunes 5 on Windows XP.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Fair use rationale for Image:Animorphs_16_The_Warning.jpg
Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Animorphs_16_The_Warning.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
Thank you. Rockfang (talk) 22:46, 4 January 2008 (UTC)
AfD nomination of Poker psychology
An editor has nominated Poker psychology, an article on which you have worked or that you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").
Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Poker psychology and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).
You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 11:14, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Strategy Challenges Collection 2 In the Wild.jpg

Aard
A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Aard, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the dated prod
notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. If you agree with the deletion of the article, and you are the only person who has made substantial edits to the page, please add db-author
to the top of Aard. Jfire (talk) 17:47, 29 January 2008 (UTC)
