Peer Review for Ashley Bryan Article
[edit]Hello! After chatting today, it is my understanding that so far you have edited the Ashley Bryan article directly by editing the headings and adding a new citation. The headings as they are now appear organized in a meaningful manner. I like the balance with short paragraphs for his personal life and a focus on his awards and works. If you could add more about his works it would be even better.
I wonder about the organization of the bulleted list Selected Works. Most, but not all, things on the list appear to be alphabetical. I suggest adding the year to each title and arranging them chronologically. That seems to be a common structure on other authors’ pages. Keeping them alphabetical could work too, so long as the organization is consistent. I am also a bit confused by the Works section since some of the works were written by Bryan while others were based on his work. It makes it hard to tell if he was the author and/or illustrator for the books, or if any of the ones listed were based on his work as well, and particularly hard to tell what part he played in the film. Was he the subject, an actor, etc.? Some titles are marked as illustrator, so I’m assuming the other books were authored and not illustrated by him. However, since he sometimes writes AND illustrates it would be better to clarify and not leave it up for assumptions. You could add his roles to each title,or you could separate the works into lists by authored, illustrated, authored and illustrated, works inspired by him, etc.
The lead is a good length and format. I like that it includes notable awards. I would consider adding that his works have been turned into plays since that is a section of your article. There is also a claim under the subheading Professor and Writer that he was the first African American to publish a children’s book as author and illustrator. I would add the title of the notable book to this claim. It may also be worth adding to the lead, perhaps next to the claim that he writes from the African American experience. Rewriting the sentence about the African American experience for clarity would also be helpful. It sounds a bit awkward. I like the info box with a picture. Since Bryan is an artist and illustrator, it might be nice to find additional photos for the sections that discuss his artwork. The citations so far seem varied and reputable with some journal articles and news. The autobiography is used for multiple claims, though. If possible, I would avoid using it more and rely on reputable secondary sources for any additional claims you add. I hope some of these suggestions are useful as you continue editing this article. Thank you for your work to improve it! DanaGhouse (talk) 06:51, 18 November 2019 (UTC)
