Hallo, I don't use Hotcat but was surprised it led you to add the nonexistent Category:Bronze age to this page, where even Category:Bronze Age was unnecessary as a parent category of Category:Bronze Age Scotland. Is there a bug in Hotcat that needs reporting? PamD 05:48, 19 August 2020 (UTC)
- @PamD: no. Was having trouble with Something, but I wouldn't call it a bug. More likely session cookies in Chrome. Will go see if something there still needs fixing, thanks. Elinruby (talk) 14:55, 19 August 2020 (UTC)
- @PamD: I remember now, was trying for Bronze Age weapons, but apparently it does not exist, and may be covered in some other way, so I decided that less is more. I thought I had removed the redlink though; I will make a point of refreshing in future. I want to thank you for the civility of the question, which allowed me to figure out how this happened. It did happen once before and that person was quite snippy. Elinruby (talk) 15:04, 19 August 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks: I might have been stroppier if someone had just added that red-linked category directly, but it seemed so weird that Hotcat would do it that a bug seemed the more likely explanation! PamD 15:13, 19 August 2020 (UTC)
- Hmm, surely Category:Weapons by country is only a parent category for the various "Weapons of Xland" categories? PamD 16:36, 19 August 2020 (UTC)
- @PamD: Again? There is no weapons of Scotland category, is what the problem was. And I forgot to refresh again, dammit. But here is the mechanism by which this happens, since you seem to be curious -- it suggests completing phrases so long as there is still something to match. Once there is no exact match, sometimes you can go into the parent category and find the problem -- maybe it's weapons IN Scotland not weapons OF Scotland. This is how I found "Hoards of jewelry". And if not, you take the category off. In this case I thought I had edited it to weapons of the United Kingdom (?) No... Because they were all focused on guns, I remember now, and that seemed wrong. Maybe ADD kicked in at this point. Let me go see if anything over there still needs fixing. Maybe try again for "weapons of the Bronze Age" which is what I really want. Thanks for goosing me again ;) Elinruby (talk) 00:32, 20 August 2020 (UTC)
- @PamD: in case your curiosity is more than simply a tactful way to ask me what the hell I was thinking ;) I have now seen and caught a couple more instances of it (all of them, I think, but feel free to look if so moved). It is in fact not a HotCat problem, or at least is not fixable by them. The font color of the displaytext changes to indicate match/no match. Apparently I am going slightly too fast for my tools. Which is, in my somewhat educated (on this topic) opinion, a bandwidth rather than coding issue. Given that I am in a remote part of British Columbia using an American cell phone who knows how much the device needs to phone home, even though the connection is fiber; therefore there could well be a bandwith issue my end, and therefore latency, that I will just need to be aware of. I doubt their end contributes to this, assuming their server connection is of a professional standard, is not running off a desktop somewhere. If you didn't actually mean for me to treat this as a trouble ticket, welp sorry, and now you know. See also the warning on my profile page about asking for my opinion ;) Cheers Elinruby (talk) 04:39, 20 August 2020 (UTC)

- Thanks for lengthy explanation, which I'll reread when not so early in morning. Actually Category:Weapons of Scotland does exist though the parallel cats for England, Wales, N.Ireland don't! There's the parent Category:Weapons of the United Kingdom. Almost all use of these cats is firearms rather than archaeology, and types rather than individual items, but there is the Lochaber Axe. I'm sure there must be other archaeological weapons from UK ... but enough! Happy Editing. PamD 06:41, 20 August 2020 (UTC)
