Talkback

[edit]

I use talkbacks to keep conversations on a singular page (such as the one above). Also, you didn't sign your post to my talk page with the ~~~~(four tildas). This places a signature directing to your account with a date and time stamp, as you can see a bot added your signature yesterday. Just a good habit to get used to, Sadads (talk) 03:04, 13 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Alex,

I added a few sources that I found online to a user subpage I created for the draft of the Act. I was thinking of starting to write the general summary of the bill (using the primary source mainly) while I continue to do some more research for some reliable secondary sources. What do you think? (also, is this the correct way to go about using a talkback?) Lance of Longinus (talk) 17:51, 17 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

That is a fine way to do talkback. And yes a summary of the bill is fine from the source. I would suggest in the ref tags, link directly to the sections of the bill which cover certain parts of the information. I would also make an external links section which has multiple links to the bill at different locations so that if one link dies we have multiple others. Make sure you don't discuss any of the repercussions of the bill until you have sources backing it up. I also added a comment at the discussion page of your sandbox about the blog source, User talk:Elhugheszete/Draft of Secure Federal File Sharing Act. You will want to make sure you check your watchlist and put that draft on it, Sadads (talk) 18:06, 17 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Question about sourcing

[edit]

Another question actually, how long does your article need to be? I just realized that the bill is one currently working it's way through legislation. Does it have enough sources for you to complete the requirements of your assignment in length/depth? If not, this definitely needs to be written, but I don't want you to get too deep into the research and find yourself limited by the sources. We can definitely get it to B class though, so if that is all you need it shouldn't be too hard, Sadads (talk) 18:26, 17 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The requirements for our assignment are remarkably low; since we're working on a new article all that I'm "required" to do is start a stub or get the article to "Start" quality. I'd like to try and do as much work as possible on this though; I'm not sure with my current course load if I'm going to have enough time to commit to a B class by the end of the semester, but I'm definitely interested in pursuing this article as far as I can. I figure this will be a good start that will allow me to work on other articles at a later point in the least. Lance of Longinus (talk) 20:51, 17 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Great, then we have way more than enough information!!! That sounds good,Sadads (talk) 22:56, 17 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Draft

[edit]

Hey Alex,

I've finally found some time to start working on the draft, and wanted to see what you thought so far. I'll be continually working on it, but I wanted to let you know before I got too far in case there's some glaring error in my writing technique, link usage, etc.

Thanks. Lance of Longinus (talk) 00:19, 15 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I would suggest going into your User Preferences and going to the gadgets tab and enabling WP:RefTools, and filling out the form for each of your references. Though Wikipedia allows any type of citation format that provides a wide range of information, the template which RefTools fills out is the accepted standard, and makes sure you fill out the information you need. Sorry I didn't respond quicker, my watchlist has been real busy recently, Sadads (talk) 03:13, 17 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Page was created

[edit]

Did your classmate mean to create the page before you got a chance to do a lot of work on it?Sadads (talk) 03:18, 18 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Oddly enough that actually isn't a classmate of mine, but a regular Wikipedia user. I've contacted him asking if he's interested in collaborating, and touched up some of the content he added. I'll continue to add onto it as there's some information I was looking at that he hasn't included yet. Lance of Longinus (talk) 05:38, 18 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
According to his contribution history he is part of the "Politics of Piracy class", see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Klcai . I think he is working on the recommended collaboration items that you put on the class's project page, Sadads (talk) 13:22, 18 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I see that you are quite right.. I'm not sure what this is about, as we divided the work and what articles we were all going to work on. I guess I'll have to see which one of my classmates it is. Good observation. Either way I need to start gathering more sources and get a move on with this project. Lance of Longinus (talk) 17:09, 18 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes sir, I think the best option would to be to expand the current article live, that way those of us who are watching and made the edits recently can follow what you are doing. (I follow your draft, but this is a significant change). What I would start doing is reading what you have and seeing what it adds to the current structure/content, and adding content as you read. Sadads (talk) 17:54, 18 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Collaboration

[edit]

Hey klcai,

I wasn't sure who you were in the group so I wanted to initiate a conversation. For the "response" section of the File Sharing Act, I have a few sources I've been going through to try and pick out details and wanted to extend them to you as well, just in case you find something important that I don't. Here they are:

  1. http://www.afcea.org/signal/articles/templates/Signal_Article_Template.asp?articleid=2322&zoneid=296
  2. http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9141099/Bill_would_restrict_P2P_use_on_government_networks_
  3. http://blog.eset.com/2010/03/26/h-r-4098-secure-federal-file-sharing-act

I'll continue to post more sources here for us to explore if you want. Lance of Longinus (talk) 04:00, 23 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hey,

I'll definitely take a look at them when within the next day or so & do the same if/when I find more articles.

I also wanted to get your opinion on whether you think we should put back a version of the list that was originally in the article under a subheading that goes more into the specifics of the Act, making it easier to expand on the length and information covered in the wikipedia article. Opinions?

Klcai (talk) 04:09, 23 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I would move the conversation to Talk:Secure Federal File Sharing Act, so that other editors see it,Sadads (talk) 04:04, 23 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
