That diff is an expansion of the lead. As the lead is merely a summary, the source is present where that date is discussed in body (the "Start of an industry" section). As of that revision, it was page 14 of Krystal, Arthur (2007). The Half-life of an American Essayist. David R. Godine Publisher. ISBN 1567923283. Searching Google for "Sholes and Glidden 1874" will also yield numerous additional sources, to say nothing of the additional sources indicated in the Bibliography section - all of the Richard Current works, for example. Hi, I notice you have taken a peek at Tosca. I wonder if it would be possible for you to pass a comment on the image licencing? Thanks for your input. The difficulty I see is that as Puccini did not visit the US until 1907, most images of him were taken in Italy, and might still be copyright in Italy, which is death plus seventy years. Can you look in on the discussion now ongoing on Brian's talk page and opine either there or on the Peer Review page? This is a headache and I've been spending hours looking for images taken on Puccini's 1907 and 1910 US visits, with little luck so far.--Wehwalt (talk) 14:22, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

Goebel

There is also this image of Goebel, if you think it is preferable to any of the ones we've found so far. It was created in 1890 or 1891 according to the source. Acdixon ^{(talk • contribs • count)} 15:19, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

While I do think it is of superior technical quality, the source, unfortunately, does not provide information sufficient to support a PD claim. The 1890-91 date is creation, not publication. Except in certain, limited scenarios (not applicable here), the date a work was created is not relevant to the copyright term in the United States. Эlcobbola _talk 18:09, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

Can I have your opinion

Can I get your opinion as to whether File:Wotton station (Brill Tramway) 1906.jpg is free-use or not? It's definitely taken more than 100 years ago (it's one of a series taken by Sydney Newton between 1894-1906), and while it was almost certainly published at the time I can't actually verify a publication date before 1974. It's currently used on a FAC (Wotton (Metropolitan Railway) railway station) and a prospective FAC (Brill Tramway), so needs its status clarified sooner rather than later. (I can make a legitimate fair use claim for both usages if need be, since it illustrates a long-demolished building.)

Unfortunately, without a verifiable publication date, I wouldn't be comfortable asserting it to be public domain. That said, there may be something of a loophole that could allow you a slightly alternative approach. As "publication" wasn't a defined term before 1976, subsequent case law has determined that installation of a work in a public place where no attempt at preventing duplication (e.g. photography) was made can be considered "publication". That being the case, would you be able to determine (verifiably) whether this image was so displayed before 1923? Эlcobbola _talk 14:48, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

Not really. I can verify that the collection was passed to the Leicestershire Museum and Archives before that date, but can't confirm which were selected for display. The collection wasn't formally indexed until 2003 (or if it was, the original entry was lost) so it's impossible to know what was done where. The Great Central Railway, for whom the series was taken, ceased to exist on 1 January 1923; I'm not even sure how one would determine the current copyright holder to ask consent. I think I may go down the fair-use route with an explanatory note (as I've already done with File:Bagnall at Quainton (cropped).jpg), even though I don't like using fair-use images if I can help it. – iridescent 15:30, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

Can you help me find a free image of the actress instead please? Loads of images on google search, but I know pap shots always have copyright. How do you go about getting one released into the public domain. There is one image on flickr too. My suggestion would be to email the author of this image (his email address is in his profile) to ask whether he'd be willing to release the image under a free license. Example requests are here. If he agrees, he could either update the license on Flickr or you could forward his email to OTRS. Otherwise, however, I don't know that other currently available options (i.e. searching Google) have any reasonable likelihood of success. Unless we're fortunate enough for a still-liivng celebrity to be photographed by a Wikipedian, we're seldom able to obtain free images. Эlcobbola _talk 18:06, 29 July 2010 (UTC)

On Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Miss Meyers/archive1, I've had an oppose over fair use of a picture of the deceased horse.
