Character Advancement
[edit]Hi Elbit,
I was interested by your edit summary on the LARP article, "the majority of LARPs outside the U.S. do not have character advancement systems". The majority of British LARPs that I'm aware of, including the largest (Lorien Trust, Curious Pastimes, Maelstrom) and the oldest (Treasure Trap) do have character advancement systems - I'm only aware of a few with no advancement at all. I don't know what the situation is in the rest of the world, though - where are you based? TSP 12:09, 6 June 2006 (UTC)
- The same goes for the majority of German LARPs, I haven't seen a LARP without character advancement here yet, so I'm reverting the removal of this section. If you're only disputing whether character advancement is a "basic" or not, the section could be moved to a more appropriate place. --Conti|✉ 14:05, 6 June 2006 (UTC)
- I was disputing both, actually. On the first account, I was clearly wrong. I wasn't aware of character advancement in UK LARP, nor of it's pervasiveness in German LARP. I'm Nordic-based, and advancement systems are a rare curiosity in Nordic LARPs - a small minority of mainstream LARPs, non-existent in arthaus. To the best of my knowledge (and I might be wrong again) - Russian LARP and French LARP also has little or no character advancement, and Assassin games, the US Theatre Style and UK "freeforms" rarely have the campaign format where advancement is used - though USTS does have examples of character advancement in campaigns. So I'd argue that it belongs in the article, but not in "LARP basics" on the same level as in-game/off-game and simulation/representation. Perhaps better under the "Style" section. --Elbit 19:08, 6 June 2006 (UTC)
