Lately, I have taken a close eye on Big Brother 17 (U.S.) for a wave of massive edits. Occasionally, one of the recent edits vandalizes the article, in which I revert it. To prevent future cases of vandalism on that article, the page should be protected as preventative means.--9March2019 (talk) 01:26, 17 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Big Brother (franchise), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Big Brother. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Largest Intraday Point Changes

[edit]

The largest intraday point losses and gains on "List of largest daily changes in the Dow Jones Industrial Average" has nothing to do with the closing price. I was the one who created the data list originally and the intention of the list according to your own original definition is: "An intraday point gain is defined as the difference between the opening price (which may or may not be the intraday low) and the intraday high. This is distinguished from an intraday point gain, which is defined as the difference between the intraday high and the intraday low." Using this definition I created the data that was put into the largest intraday point losses and gains. The largest intraday point loss is the point from where the market opened to the lowest point that the market reached in the entire day. Notice that this has nothing whatsoever to do with the closing price. The largest intraday gain is the same way. So, lets use an example: Lets say that the market is up 500 points in the middle of the day compared to the opening price. This record would go onto the largest intraday point gain automatically because the 500 points that it is up from the opening price is larger than the lowest record on the chart. Now, lets say the stock market falls off in the afternoon and falls 700 points from its highest point that was recorded earlier. Well according to the definition the record for the opening price to the highest point is still set that day at 500 points however the closing price would be recorded as -200 points (note that the closing price for the day is mearly for noteworthy purposes and has no bearing as to whether the record hits the table or not. Sorry for the novel but I hope that this makes sense. Please let me know if you have any thoughts. King1257 (talk) 16:01, 26 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

By the way, what may have confused you was the fact that the negative close from 8/25/2015 was the only one on the list that was negative. The only reason this was the only one negative was because none of the other top 20 were ever negative before it. This is because days that have a high point swing in them don't usually close in negative territory. This negative close just happened to be an unusual anomaly. King1257 (talk) 16:16, 26 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps a table can be created for the largest intraday point changes with turnovers, where a deep positive intraday change turns negative at closing (and vice versa).--9March2019 (talk) 16:21, 26 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Let me see if I can create some data for that King1257 (talk) 16:33, 26 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The table has been transferred to the article.--9March2019 (talk) 18:08, 26 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I updated the article with the other table and put it where you had make space for it. Thanks for your help. Let me know if you need anything else. King1257 (talk) 18:26, 26 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I have combined some of the sections together to make the article more efficient for printing.--9March2019 (talk) 18:29, 26 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Dow and S&P 500 milestones

[edit]

I reverted your changes to those pages as bear market has not happened yet. I left Nasdaq Comp. alone since it is in bear market. The S&P 500 came perilously close to going into bear market, but has not yet closed below the threshold for it. If it later goes into bear market, please feel free to change both pages back. NoahTalk 22:03, 26 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Typically, if one index closes in bear market territory, it's almost guaranteed the other two will follow its cues. 9March2019 (talk) 22:13, 26 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, idk what happened, but the breadth thrust has been off the charts since 2019 began. Nasdaq is actually getting somewhat close to exiting bear territory (over 16% off the low). Appears the entire market suddenly shifted from bearish to bullish. *knock on wood* NoahTalk 23:08, 30 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
So far, this month appears to be about recovering from last month's losses, but heavy gains that follow heavy losses typically mean trouble ahead. 9March2019 (talk) 00:12, 31 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Eh, I'm not so sure. Breadth thrust usually indicates bullish times ahead. 1987 and 2016 had the S&P 500 retest the initial low before moving higher. 2009 and 2011 simply went to the upside. 2008 also had an occurrence with a short rally that ultimately failed. This means there could be an 80% chance of a continued bull market. You should look at gains and losses in percentage terms for a daily basis. The majority of the recent moves have been under 1% which indicates that volatility is decreasing. Today's large gain simply occurred due to the January report of 213k jobs added in the private sector and the fed's 10-0 decision to keep rates the same. Multi-day rallies aren't typical of bear markets. Just the fact that the S&P 500 has been up 14/20 of the past days is quite telling. The S&P 500's old resistance level may in fact become its new support level. I wouldn't go all in just yet, but it is quite clear the top has not been reached yet. NoahTalk 00:58, 31 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

... Wow... One year later and 2019 just had a 20% rally! RIP 2018 "Bear Market". NoahTalk 03:16, 17 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Bear market already done?

[edit]

Appears the bear market officially ended at least for the Dow since it rose 20% in 3 days. NoahTalk 20:35, 26 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Not yet, bear markets do not end until new highs are reached. 9March2019 (talk) 20:54, 26 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Not according to all the media. Everyone said that a 20% rise means it is over. NoahTalk 21:11, 26 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
This can hardly still be called a bear market considering the Dow is up over 25% and the S&P is over 20% higher. NoahTalk 20:19, 8 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It may be too soon to call it a new bull market as some sources say the rally has to last at least six months (must not plunge below the established trough) while others say the rally must gain enough momentum to soar above the record highs back in February. 9March2019 (talk) 20:56, 8 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Im actually convinced that despite the highs in the Nasdaq, this isn't a bull market, but rather the largest bear trap of all time. The economy took a large tumble and this "recovery" doesnt reflect any sound data. NoahTalk 18:14, 10 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The S&P is approaching new highs, while the Dow still has a lot to climb before new highs are within reach. For now, it's just a miraculous comeback after that free fall in March. 9March2019 (talk) 19:55, 10 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Intraday

[edit]

Why do you still think a negative close erases an intraday high, that is just illogical, an intraday high is just that, the close can't affect it. 69.116.73.107 (talk) 23:50, 19 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It's like vomiting in an eating contest, which results in disqualification, even if the eater would have otherwise won. 9March2019 (talk) 14:14, 20 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
No that is not how it works, and is an idiotic comparison, an intraday high is just that, it doesn't matter what happens after. 69.116.73.107 (talk) 17:24, 20 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
