St-Jean Chiefs to Saint-Jean Chiefs

[edit]

Hi Earl, I was about to move the title "St-Jean Chiefs" to "Saint-Jean Chiefs" and there was an error message not to move. On the St-Jean Chiefs article, it shows little information and the article is a stub. No requested move is needed. So, go to the St-Jean Chiefs article and move the new title from "St-Jean Chiefs" to "Saint-Jean Chiefs" to match the related titles that has "Saint-Jean" for e.g. "Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu". Do it right away. OK? Thanks. Steam5 (talk) 01:01, 26 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The article Cristina Rémond has been proposed for deletion. The proposed-deletion notice added to the article should explain why.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. File:Charlesherbertmackintosh.jpg needs authorship information

[edit]
Dear uploader:

The media file you uploaded as File:Charlesherbertmackintosh.jpg appears to be missing information as to its authorship (and or source), or if you did provide such information, it is confusing for others trying to make use of the image.

It would be appreciated if you would consider updating the file description page, to make the authorship of the media clearer.

Although some images may not need author information in obvious cases, (such where an applicable source is provided), authorship information aids users of the image, and helps ensure that appropriate credit is given (a requirement of some licenses).

  • If you created this media yourself, please consider explicitly including your user name, for which: {{subst:usernameexpand|Earl Andrew/Archives 9}} will produce an appropriate expansion,
    or use the {{own}} template.
  • If this is an old image, for which the authorship is unknown or impossible to determine, please indicate this on the file description page.
If you have any questions please see Help:File page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 20:40, 2 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

sorting

[edit]

Fyi... in biographies, you don't have to add sort values to categories. Example: [[Category:Curlers from Ontario|Anderson, Mike]]

The DEFAULTSORT parameter will set the sort value for all categories, provided it comes before the categories. Only if you wish to override the DEFAULTSORT value, do you add a sort value in a category. DEFAULTSORT is a requirement in biographies, but not other articles.

On talk pages of biographies, the listas parameter in WikiProject Biography does the same thing. Bgwhite (talk) 21:43, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

United States Junior Curling Championships

[edit]

Hey Earl! I wanted to put the information for both the United States Men's Junior Curling Championship and the United States Women's Junior Curling Championship pages onto one page, United States Junior Curling Championships (currently a dab page), but I'm not sure if there needs to be a merge (with that whole process), or if I can just copy and paste or something. Can you help me with this? Thanks! Prayerfortheworld (talk) 21:58, 28 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Okay then, thank you! Prayerfortheworld (talk) 00:45, 29 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Kim Hak-sung

[edit]

Hey Earl! I noticed that the name Kim Hak-sung is redirected to Kim Hak-Sung. Should the article be named Kim Hak-sung, per Korean naming conventions? Or is it not that big of an issue? Thanks! Prayerfortheworld (talk) 06:26, 29 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I suppose. I personally don't care, as long as Kim goes first, since the order of Asian names is a pet peeve of mine (that is, I get upset when the media gets it wrong.) -- Earl Andrew - talk 08:25, 29 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Okay then, thanks. I agree with you, I'm not at all fond of the way that the media tends to use the wrong order of names. Prayerfortheworld (talk) 16:50, 29 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

MSU Interview

[edit]

Dear Earl Andrew,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, were it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your name HERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) 05:50, 9 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there Earl. Back in November, you got either an AfD or PROD notification, and it was during one of the template testing project's experiments. If you could go here and leave us some feedback about what you think about the new versions of the templates we tested (there are links on the page), that would be very useful. Brier articles

[edit]

Hey Earl! An editor has moved the Brier articles from "#### Tim Hortons Brier" to "#### The Brier," with reason "rm sponsor name from title of article." Is there any basis for this? We've had sponsor names in the articles for the WCCs and the Brier and Scotties before without any problems. Thanks! Prayerfortheworld (talk) 22:31, 18 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I've moved them all back. We've had this discussion before... even if we do one day remove the sponsor from the articles, calling the "2010 The Tim Hortons Brier" is ridiculously ridiculous. -- Earl Andrew - talk 02:36, 19 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Curlers and sort

[edit]

I see you creating alot of curling articles about people. Just a FYI to save you some typing. You don't have to add the sort value to every category. If you add DEFAULTSORT, all the categories will use that value for their sort value. The only time you add a sort value to a category is when you want to override the DEFAULTSORT value.

An example is this changelog from Beth Iskiw. Bgwhite (talk) 05:57, 29 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Brier

[edit]

Hey Earl! Kind of a minor thing, but for the 2012 Brier article (and probably all the others), would it be more correct to list the territories as "Northwest Territories/Yukon" or "Yukon/Northwest Territories?" It was listed as "Yukon/Northwest Territories" in the teams table but as "Northwest Territories/Yukon" elsewhere, and the CCA site shows it as "Northwest Territories/Yukon" (NT/YT), but I just wanted to check with someone who would know more about it than I do. Pierre Bourque

[edit]

Just to keep you updated on what's happening with Pierre Bourque (journalist):

  1. I had the BLP noticeboard come in to do a third party review of the article for compliance with WP:BLP, so some of the potentially problematic content has been trimmed down — but fundamentally the article's now much cleaner and more straightforward, and less likely to raise any new issues.
  2. During the process, I also noticed that while you quite rightly restored the article back in 2010 after Spoonky's first attempt to speedy it without a legitimate rationale, you did so in a way that left a big chunk of the edit history still deleted and stranded at the redirect from "Pierre Bourque (web entrepreneur)". So I remerged the two edit histories a few hours ago, and just wanted to quickly remind you that when you do restore a deleted article, you should do it by using the "restore" function so that the whole history is reinstated, instead of by cutting and pasting the deleted text into a new recreation.

Grand Slam of Curling

[edit]

Hey Earl! Just a quick question. Sportsnet had posted up a schedule for the men's Grand Slams for this season, but I haven't seen anything regarding the women's Grand Slams, so I was wondering if you knew anything about it. I tried to update the 2012–13 curling season page to reflect the information I did know, but I'm not completely sure if everything's up-to-date there. Looking at the women's slams, there are four already scheduled (the Autumn Gold Curling Classic, the Manitoba Lotteries Women's Curling Classic, the Colonial Square Ladies Classic, and the Masters). I wasn't aware that the Colonial Square Ladies Classic had become a slam, and I'm thinking that the Players' should be part of the women's schedule as well, but that would make the total number of slams to be five, which is a little weird, so I wanted to check in with you. Thanks in advance! Prayerfortheworld (talk) 17:21, 11 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Save for the Players', women's slams have rarely been shown on TV, so the reason that you can't find anything is because they are probably not going to be shown. As for the amount of Slams, it seems that for the women, the amount changes every year. There was a season a few years ago where they did actually have five slams. However, the WCT site shows there only being three Women's slams this year. Where are you getting the information that there are five? -- Earl Andrew - talk 17:36, 11 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm... I wasn't too keen on trusting the WCT site for the Grand Slams, because it seems as if it hasn't been updated recently regarding the new information on the Grand Slams. I was assuming that there may be five based on the fact that the Players' has traditionally been a slam, but I'm not too sure... I know that the Autumn Gold, the Manitoba Lotteries, and the Players' have been Grand Slams for the past few seasons, but I'm not very sure about the status of the Masters on the women's tour and the Colonial Square Ladies Classic... Prayerfortheworld (talk) 18:01, 11 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, you're right. Those are old dates they have for them. But, I have seen nothing that indicates that those two other events are now Grand Slam events. Care to give me a reference? -- Earl Andrew - talk 19:16, 11 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I read this article, which says at the end that the Masters will be the first Grand Slam event of the season, a while back, and this article (entitled "Sportsnet Announces 2012-13 Grand Slam of Curling Event Schedule") further confirmed that. I'm not sure where or if I read this, but the Masters used to be the Sun Life Classic, which makes sense, I suppose, since the website for the Sun Life Classic (http://www.sunlifeclassic.com) redirects to the site for the Masters. As for the Colonial Squares Ladies Classic, I haven't read anything that's talked about the promotion of the event to Grand Slam status, but Sirrussellott made an edit which supports that idea. I'll do a little research and see if I can find anything about that. Prayerfortheworld (talk) 20:53, 11 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I just checked the official website for the Colonial Squares Ladies Classic, and it says that it's a Grand Slam event this year. The StarPhoenix wrote an article which said the same. I haven't seen anything from the WCT site or any other related sources, though. Prayerfortheworld (talk)

Small technicality...

[edit]

Hey Earl! Do you know if teams representing Germany back in the day when West/East Germany existed were known as "West Germany?" An editor made an edit which changed "Germany" to "West Germany," but the results page on the WCF says "Germany." Just wondering if you knew anything about this. Thanks! Prayerfortheworld (talk) 02:14, 15 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It's funny, back when I first created the list of Women's and Men's world curling champions, I identified Germany as West Germany, but after a while I decided to drop the west, because all signs seemed to point to it being referred to as just Germany. I don't think there was any curling in East Germany... Any of the media from back then seemed to also just call it Germany, so I would stick with calling it Germany. -- Earl Andrew - talk 02:17, 15 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

A google news archive search will give you more examples. -- Earl Andrew - talk 02:21, 15 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Oh my... I already reverted that edit ahaha hmmm... would it be wise to use Germany because the WCF results page does so? Or should I change the edit to say "West Germany".... Prayerfortheworld (talk) 02:36, 15 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know, but any change would involve changing other articles as well. I'd say, go for it if you feel up to it! -- Earl Andrew - talk 02:38, 15 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion

[edit]

Hey Earl! 2012 St. Paul Cash Spiel has been proposed for deletion, and the nominator's claim seems to be quite reasonable, even though the article meets WP:NCURL. What should be done? Thanks in advance! Prayerfortheworld (talk) 18:22, 24 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sandra Schmirler

[edit]

Hey Earl! I've been working on the article on Sandra Schmirler, and I'm hoping to nominate it for GA status, but I just wanted to ask you about a few things. I was just looking over the GA guidelines, and I noticed that the article only has one picture. Even though it probably won't matter, I was wondering if you knew of any other pictures that could be added to the article. Also, I had put in the teams table, but it looks a bit awkward where it is right now. I'm not sure where else to put it, though, so if you want to move it around, that'd be nice. Also, how do you think the article looks as a whole? It seems ready for a nomination, but I just wanted to check with you, since you probably know more about what should/could be in the article than I do. Thanks much! Prayerfortheworld (talk) 04:51, 30 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I've noticed your efforts. Good stuff. I have made a few fixes, and will take a look at the article again at some point. As for pictures, the only thing I can think of is making a diagram of her most famous shot, the one she made to win the 1997 Canadian Olympic Curling Trials over Shannon Kleibrink. There might be something on youtube I can use as a reference. -- Earl Andrew - talk 12:09, 30 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Here it is! [1] -- Earl Andrew - talk 12:13, 30 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Cool! I just realized that it might be good to place the "Event statistics" and "Teams" section as subsections under the "Curling career," but it's a tad strange, since the teams section is usually separate from the "career" section. Do you think that'll be okay? Also, do you have a source for the event statistics? It might be good to have that on hand. Prayerfortheworld (talk) 17:57, 30 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
World Curling Federation and the Canadian Curling Association for most of it. The Olympic Trials are another matter, as it seems there is no good source on the internet anymore. It's too bad, because I am sure they would have had player percentages for that event. I remember having to look up the results in the newspaper for that page. I don't have time to source everything at the moment, unfortunately, but I think you're probably comfortable with where I found that stuff. TBH, I used this site: http://www.cassidys.ca/cca/ instead of the CCA since it's easier to find stuff, and has career totals. Not sure how official of a reference it is though. As for where to place it on the page, I'll leave that up to you. -- Earl Andrew - talk 18:45, 30 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
True, true. I just wanted to know just in case the reviewer felt a need for that to be sourced. I'll put it up for nomination soon, since it seems to be ready. Thanks! Prayerfortheworld (talk) 18:51, 30 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Earl! The reviewer pointed out that the source link for File:Schmirler_Sandra.jpg isn't working. I tried to look around in the Library and Archives of Canada, but I could't find the exact picture. Do you know where else it might be? Also, I found this picture while searching through the Library and Archives. I think it'd be a good add, but I just wanted to confirm that it would qualify for non-free use. If you could help with that, I'd really appreciate it. Thank you! Prayerfortheworld (talk) 19:23, 26 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No idea. I'm not an images person, unfortunately. -- Earl Andrew - talk 19:29, 26 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
No worries. I found the image after a little more digging, and I'll check on the non-free use policies for the image. Thanks anyway! Prayerfortheworld (talk) 20:29, 26 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Curling at the 2014 Winter Olympics

[edit]

Hey Earl! Random question... Do you know where I could find a source for this statement? "Scotland, England and Wales all compete separately in international curling. By an agreement between the curling federations of those three home nations, only Scotland can score Olympic qualification points for Great Britain." It's been tagged with a "citation needed" template on the Curling at the 2014 Winter Olympics page, but I'm not sure where to find a source. Thanks! Prayerfortheworld (talk) 07:14, 11 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No idea. I think I've only ever read it on Wikipedia. -- Earl Andrew - talk 17:36, 11 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm. Another editor found it on the Olympic qualification information page on the WCF site, so I guess that's resolved. Prayerfortheworld (talk) 07:24, 12 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Craig Kochan, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Curler (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Masters Grand Slam of Curling

[edit]

Hey Earl! I'm just having a bit of trouble figuring out what the official name of the Masters Grand Slam of Curling is. On the WCT site, the event's listed as the "Rogers Masters of Curling," but the official website says that the event name is "The Masters Grand Slam of Curling." I looked around on some other sites, and CBC calls it the "Rogers Masters of Curling," the Curling News calls it "The Rogers Masters," and the Brantford Expositor calls it the "Masters Grand Slam of Curling," so I'm a bit confused. MY first instinct would be to go with the official website or the WCT site, but I'm not exactly sure what to do. Any thoughts? Thanks! Prayerfortheworld (talk) 19:46, 14 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sportsnet also calls it the Masters Grand Slam of Curling. That's what I would call it. But the CCA is calling it the Masters of Curling and TSN is still calling it the Sun Life Classic :P -- Earl Andrew - talk 22:17, 14 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Oh my haha. Sounds good to me! Prayerfortheworld (talk) 23:24, 14 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Oh also, kind of a minor thing, but do you think "The Masters Grand Slam of Curling" would be more appropriate, or "Masters Grand Slam of Curling"? "2012 The Masters Grand Slam of Curling" feels kind of weird to me, but if it's like "2012 The National," then I can't complain. Thanks! Prayerfortheworld (talk) 23:29, 14 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I really hate using "The" in article titles, but I do understand it's unavoidable for The National. -- Earl Andrew - talk 03:41, 15 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
