Which way is correct track listing way?

Ok, let's say a song contains a hidden track. And on a deluxe edition of a album the hidden track is not on the final track as the standard edition. But instead it's on the final track of the deluxe edition material. An example of this is here: Sing the Sorrow and Weapons (album). Which way of listing is correct? If you can't understand what I mean please ask more. — 60.229.149.123 (talk) 09:07, 2 April 2012 (UTC)

Requesting review of single game college football article for notability

Hi Eagles247, since you are an admin and a member of wiki project college football, I am wondering if you would be willing to review the 2011 Michigan vs. Notre Dame football game article that was recently created. I do not see how it meets notability, and gave my thoughts on the talk page and tagged it for notability. The game itself is already covered extensively in both the 2011 Michigan Wolverines football team game capsule section as well as the Michigan-Notre Dame rivalry page. Forgive me if this is not the appropriate way to go about this... I could not find a forum to raise the question on the wiki project college football portal. Regards, Tedmoseby (talk) 05:48, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

The only assertion of significance is that it is the first night game in Michigan Wolverine football history. Had it been the first night game ever in all of college football, maybe, but I would suggest you nominate the page for deletion for a more thorough consensus. Capitalization

As a writer, Wikipedia's strange rules on capitalization are borderline offensive. They go against everything I know as a professional. Since this is certainly not my site and not the rules I'm used to working under, I'll definitely try to veer towards NOT capitalizing anything in the future - should cut down on your workload a bit, eh?

I'd be very interested in understanding WHY these rules were written the way they were. Is there a discussion you could point me towards wherein these rules were decided?
- Smike (talk) 03:37, 7 April 2012 (UTC)

In addition to following Wikipedia's capitalization rules in the future, I will be going through my edits over the next couple days and correcting those few times when I made this same mistake. Thank you for bringing it to my attention.
- Smike (talk) 03:46, 7 April 2012 (UTC)

I'm sorry Wikipedia's Manual of Style has offended you. I, too, have had to change the way I write in accordance with the MOS, but it has also made me a better writer. It's difficult to locate a single discussion that led to the current consensus, as there are 128 archive pages. The oldest thread I can find (Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Archive 0#See also links within paragraphs should be bold, from 2003) discloses that the rule had already been in place. Eagles 24/7 (C) 03:55, 7 April 2012 (UTC)
Wow! Thank you very much for taking the time to search for that. I was hoping there would be at least a dormant discussion I could actually take part in, but it's nonetheless quite informative to see that this particular rule has been around for a very long time by Wikipedia standards. It's good to see that it's based on a proper print manual, but you can add me to the list of Wikipedians who disagree with their ages-old interpretation of how to translate that style online. Many, many reputable and widely-read sites HAVE directly adapted print conventions for use online, but I find this to be nonsense. It's a completely different medium! As I said though, offensive is too strong a word - it's borderline at most. Uncomfortable to work with, yes, but I'd have to be a character on Dynasty to be truly offended by something like that.

Regarding the archived discussion you linked, the bit that stands out to me most is when Brion says "I suppose it doesn't really matter, but 'External links' etc fit in better with the house style."

In other words, "This is how Wikipedia looks right now," and this is 2003 we're talking about, "so just do it this way and try not to think about it." Oh, OK. So there's no good reason in particular, but do it this way or it won't all look the same. Great, thanks.

While there's something to be said for standardization, making everything look the same just for the sake of it seems awfully shortsighted. And while I'm genuinely glad that you've been able to use Wikipedia's clear structure and rules as guides to assist you in growing as a writer, I'm afraid I may never escape the frustrating paradox they present: at once providing simple, fool-proof guideposts keeping the natives out of trouble and engendering cooperation amid dispute, while constraining our abilities and discouraging our enthusiasm at the same time.
- Smike (talk) 08:47, 7 April 2012 (UTC)

Capitalization issues fixed! I finally finished going through my edits and have not only reversed all CAPS changes I've made thus far, but along the way I fixed any other CAPS discrepancies I noticed, and took the opportunity to improve anything else I caught to boot - anything quick and easy to improve, anyway! :-)

Is is possible to move The Fake Sound of Progress to The Fake Sound of Progress (song) and the page Thefakesoundofprogress to The Fake Sound of Progress? — ℂℏɨ₡ƙ℮ᵰᵴ∂ⱺ☮яϰŊøɓ (talk) 04:32, 7 April 2012 (UTC)

Try the talk pages. I don't know anything about the subject matter, so I can't tell you. Eagles 24/7 (C) 04:35, 7 April 2012 (UTC)
That's fair enough. It's because Thefakesoundofprogress is just stylised, and I think the talk page has been abandoned. As in no one pays attention to it anymore. What else can I do? — ℂℏɨ₡ƙ℮ᵰᵴ∂ⱺ☮яϰŊøɓ (talk) 04:40, 7 April 2012 (UTC)

Quick question

Does an article need to have at least one English language reference? In the case of this article (1K17 Szhatie) which I am copy editing, the user has only displayed one reference and it is entirely in Russian. On a slightly unrelated note, I'm back (again) :P. --Skamecrazy123 (talk) 15:15, 10 April 2012 (UTC)

Welcome back! I don't believe there is a policy that requires any given article have an English source. Just a note saying the language is Russian will suffice. Eagles 24/7 (C) 20:11, 10 April 2012 (UTC)

Skamecrazy123 query

I have stumbled across these two uses of capital letters ("Bhavnagar City" and "Bhavnagar State") and was wondering whether or not "city" and "state" need to be capitalized. Thanks in advance. --Skamecrazy123 (talk) 17:10, 11 April 2012 (UTC)

I would say leave them capitalized, like New York City. Eagles 24/7 (C) 19:23, 11 April 2012 (UTC)

Request on Wknight94's talk page

What exactly am I suppose to be stopping? I thought there was no problem with it unless the article wasn't going to be re-created?.--Yankees10 20:06, 12 April 2012 (UTC)

There is no policy backing your requests to delete redirects in order to create an article "from scratch." For attribution/copyright reasons, we should not delete redirects for no good reason. Eagles 24/7 (C) 20:09, 12 April 2012 (UTC)
But there is no policy saying that it can't be done and i'm not breaking any copyright rules since the articles are getting re-made right after they are deleted. Its not like there is any extensive history getting deleted here.--Yankees10 20:18, 12 April 2012 (UTC)
For example if I was asking for Archie Bradley to get deleted, that obviously wouldn't be right, since there is extensive history there. This is just simply a page that wasn't even created as an article and was created simpley as a re-direct.--Yankees10 20:21, 12 April 2012 (UTC)
I still can't understand why you don't just convert the redirect to an article like everyone else on Wikipedia. Eagles 24/7 (C) 20:23, 12 April 2012 (UTC)
It may seem odd to you, but I like creating the article from "scratch"--Yankees10 20:25, 12 April 2012 (UTC)
The article is still getting re-created, but the user who created the redirect has now lost his edit. Eagles 24/7 (C) 20:19, 12 April 2012 (UTC)
Please ignore this. Screen was jumpy so I clicked on the wrong link... Wknight94 talk 20:26, 12 April 2012 (UTC)
Sorry, but if I weigh deleting a now-useless redirect versus pissing off a guy who has created 98 hojillion articles, that's an easy call. Wknight94 talk 20:29, 12 April 2012 (UTC)

West Virginia Mountaineers Football

Could you monitor the situation with user Swcrowe on this page. I know it's a rule here to save edits until things are official, and that user is insistent on the article listing them as a member of the Big 12, even though they won't join until July. I let him know that on his talk page after switching it back to the Big East and he reverted the edit with an edit summary reading "It's staying as Big 12 whether you like it or not." which sounds like a violation of WP:OWN to me and this guy screams edit war.--Rockchalk717 (talk) 01:36, 13 April 2012 (UTC)

I suggest you start a discussion on the article's talk page to generate a consensus. I'd go for accuracy in this case. Eagles 24/7 (C) 01:59, 13 April 2012 (UTC)

Les Brown

I would say Les Brown (American football) certainly meets the criteria for speedy deletion. No college football experience, the longest of long shots to make an NFL roster.►Chris NelsonHolla! 04:00, 16 April 2012 (UTC)

The only criteria he could qualify for is A7, but I believe there is an assertion of notability (being a player on an NFL team). AFD is probably the way to go here, unless you want to PROD it. Eagles 24/7 sock (C) 12:29, 16 April 2012 (UTC)

Earnest Graham

E, can you use your marvelous references to check the roster status of Earnest Graham. An IP user changed his status to free agent, and I can't find anything that substantiates it, but did find several articles discussing his future----but with no mention of him as a free agent. You always seems to know where the random NFL refs are buried . . . . Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 12:37, 16 April 2012 (UTC)

When in doubt, check Wikipedia's NFL roster templates. We keep them as up to date as possible, and the Buccaneers' template is no different. Here's a reference for you. Eagles 24/7 sock (C) 12:48, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
Thanks. Not sure how I overlooked that in my Google News search; I had found other news outlet blogs discussing his future with the Bucs with no mention of free agency. What are we using for sources for the roster templates? Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 13:04, 16 April 2012 (UTC)

Brain-teaser

Hey, E, I've got one of those odd infobox questions for you. In "Template:Infobox college golf team" and other infoboxes based on the same coding is it possible to change the displayed order of the hex colors while maintaining the existing background and font colors? We are using blue as a background color on the Gators team pages, and it seems that the background color is tied to the first hex, and the font color is tied to the second hex---unless the font color is over-ridden in the "fontcolor" field. The school colors are "orange and blue" (not "blue and orange"), and it would be nice to make the order of the color hexes match the stated order of the colors. I'm hoping you can use your infobox old black magic again. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 23:24, 19 April 2012 (UTC)

Do you just want hex1 and hex2 flipped in the infobox code, or flip the background and font colors in the Gators infobox like this? Eagles 24/7 (C) 23:33, 19 April 2012 (UTC)
The goal is to have the first displayed hex be orange and the second displayed hex be blue, but still have blue as the background color. Is that possible? Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 23:45, 19 April 2012 (UTC)
Are you referring to "hex" as the bands that currently display blue backgrounds with orange text? I'm sorry, I'm still not quite understanding. Eagles 24/7 (C) 23:48, 19 April 2012 (UTC)
The hexes (perhaps misnamed, since they are squares and not hexagons) are the little square boxes that display the team colors adjacent to the text describing the team colors. In the infobox coding, there are three fields designated "hex1," "hex2" and "hex3." Hex1 is the first displayed color box, and is apparently also tied to the color band background color. Hex2 is the second displayed color box and is apparently tied to the font color, but it can be overridden for font color by inserting a different color in the "fontcolor" field. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 23:56, 19 April 2012 (UTC)
I missed the color boxes, now I understand. I'll take a look. Eagles 24/7 (C) 23:58, 19 April 2012 (UTC)
The only thing we can really do is separate the functions of the hex parameters. That is, we'd have a parameter to control which colors display in the boxes, and we'd have a parameter to control the color "band" headings. Since there are only seven pages that use this infobox, it is manageable. Eagles 24/7 (C) 00:02, 20 April 2012 (UTC)

Ah, sometimes the most elegant solution is the simplest solution, as my economics professors used to say. That cures the problem for the golf team infobox, but I'm really trying to cure the problem uniformly for baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, gymnastics, lacrosse, softball, swimming, tennis, track and volleyball. (Football isn't an issue, because the infobox template doesn't have the color bars that all the rest do.) Maybe we could do this over a period of several days. If you can fix the template coding, I could implement the necessary changes for each of the infoboxes where the altered templates are being used. I wouldn't want you to be responsible for all of the clean-up. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 00:19, 20 April 2012 (UTC)

I'm not sure it's a good idea to do this for all of those sports. Golf only has seven pages, but those other sports might span hundreds of articles. Florida is the only school with this problem, correct? Eagles 24/7 (C) 00:22, 20 April 2012 (UTC)
Here's the count of the number of articles using the infoboxes for each of the following types of college teams: baseball (86), basketball (279), cross country (3), golf (7), gymnastics (10), softball (25), swimming (7), tennis (10), track (8), and volleyball (23). The infoboxes for football and lacrosse don't utilize color bars, so they're not an issue. Looking at the numbers, the only one which would be completely unmanageable to edit by hand would be the basketball infobox with 279 transclusions. In answer to your question, I'm aware of several other college teams whose colors are defined in a particular order—Michigan (maize and blue) and Ohio State (scarlet and gray). I'm sure there are others, but I couldn't rattle off any other good examples off the top of my head. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 01:56, 20 April 2012 (UTC)
Can I suggest that you ask at the respective WikiProjects? I just don't feel comfortable making changes to infoboxes used in close to 500 articles without a formal discussion. Eagles 24/7 (C) 20:28, 20 April 2012 (UTC)
Good point, Eagles. We don't want to upset the apple cart with any other projects. As you know, WP:CBB is very active, but for most of the rest of the college sports, there is no specific college-level WikiProject. There are, however, general projects like WikiProject Golf and WikiProject Volleyball for most of the others, and I will reach out to them over the next several days.
