[edit]Sessions Courts deal with criminal cases. Small Causes deal with civil cases. I've got you a link in courts in WB: [1]. Can you also research on the highest point in the city if possible? =Nichalp «Talk»= 11:42, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

- COntinue on. I'll do the history later. Some points: Mother Teresa's role should be mentioned more effectively. I've temp removed he sentence. Next, Chinatown can be added to culture. Lastly I feel the =Economy= section can do with some more beefing up on occupations etc. =Nichalp «Talk»= 09:39, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

Summary
[edit]I'm a little rusty in writing summaries, and I think I could have written it much better. It's been a long time since I wrote a featured article. Coming back to your query. I did debate on the Black Hole of Calcutta, but I found it digressed too much from the article. (In general older events should be more heavily summarised than current events.) I also recommend removing the Battle of Plassey bit as it has more to do with Bengal than the city's history. =Nichalp «Talk»= 19:25, 16 April 2006 (UTC)
- Let me know once the comments are fixed. I'll share with you some tips on what needs to be done before you list it on FAC. =Nichalp «Talk»= 19:28, 16 April 2006 (UTC)
Aquatica
[edit]Glad to hear you're working on it!
I noticed the article still doesn't clearly explain why it's notable. You made a good point in saying it's the only large scale water theme park in Kolkata / eastern India, maybe you should add that to the article (for folks who don't know)?

Image dilemma
[edit]I like the flower market pic better. However, I am not a big fan of either. I think a good image of port activity or a shot of some company headquarters would be better.--Blacksun 13:17, 18 April 2006 (UTC)
- Hmm. Once it had a swanky IT company pic. But it was removed. Unlike Mumbai, Kolkata lacks any telltale economic icon.(Mumbai has Dalal Street BSE). Port activities would have been better. But getting a pic of the activities in the port is not easy. Plus, the port is not that much imp in Kolkata now.
- It's really a problem. For the time being, let's keep the flower market.I have a mental pic though which may be most apprpriate. A pic of the River Hooghly with an array of chimneys billowing smoke, preferably shot from the opposite bank, or, for clarity, from a boat in the river! I wish we had a good photographer cooperating with us! Bye.--Dwaipayanc 13:42, 18 April 2006 (UTC)
Portal India
[edit]Hmm its really strange. They have kolkata article as todays selected article on the portal india page. But the summary is like really old crappy version. They must have some type of recycling thing going on? I dont know who to contact to update it. Do you? --Blacksun 01:31, 19 April 2006 (UTC)
- Never mind, I think I notified the correct person and also submitted an updated summary. Though for some reason the updated version does not show on the portal india page (yet). --Blacksun 01:44, 19 April 2006 (UTC)
Kolkata
[edit]Sorry I haven't given the Kolkata article too much attention lately — work has caught up with me and I've also been trying to push another article through PR/FAC. I thought this map of Kolkata might help you though. Let me know if you would like any modifications made. BTW, how is the PR coming along? Thanks! AreJay 04:46, 19 April 2006 (UTC)
- I just updated the map based on your request. Hope this helps. AreJay 22:08, 19 April 2006 (UTC)

Calcutta Presidency
[edit]Just posted this on the talk page. I notice that you created the page, so what do you think? I'm also going to check that it doesn't duplicate information in other articles (Say History of Bengal) as I find it hard to believe that there isn't a lot of information out there already about the Bengal Presidency.
"There was never any such administrative unit as the 'Calcutta Presidency'. Calcutta was a 'Presidency Town', but the area subject to it was the 'Bengal Presidency'. Accordingly I suggest that the page be moved to this title." Sikandarji 09:23, 19 April 2006 (UTC)
Dear Dwaipayan,
have a look at these two and let me know what you think. You ought to be pleased with some of the citations on the Bose page, less pleased with others!

Review
[edit]I'll review/cpedit over the weekend.
- Tips:
- Format the embedded references using the citation templates provided. See Bangladesh
- Browse around for some more interwiki links. See the other language links on Mumbai, India and see if Kolkata/Calcutta exists for those languages. (It makes the article seem more important)
- Try and get more appropriate images. If you can get colourful context related images, it will enhance the article.
That's it for now, will see to the article later. Regards, =Nichalp «Talk»= 11:44, 20 April 2006 (UTC)
Jinnah FAC
[edit]Hi - Jinnah is FAC. I decided to move on FAC becoz I believe that all remaining objective criticism will only be obtained there. I ask for your support and welcome all criticism. Rama's Arrow 15:03, 20 April 2006 (UTC)
- Yes you are right in suggesting "Indian and Pakistani" - I have only one point in reply, which is that Jinnah is the founder of Pakistan - given that, does it really require to emphasize his "Pakistani-ness?"
- Please think about this point, and if it doesn't change your view, lemme know so I'll make the necessary adjustments. I too have no particular notions about describing Jinnah, so I'm open to your very-valid suggestion and others which may pop up in the FAC. Thanks for taking the time to discuss this. Rama's Arrow 15:46, 20 April 2006 (UTC)

Bose's Wife
[edit]I notice that there is no reference anywhere on the page to Bose's wife Emilie Schenkl, or to the suggestion that one of the reasons he was so anxious to get to Germany was that he wanted to be with her (I followed one of the links to the Calcutta Telegraph article which details this story). Do you think this should be somehwhere on the page? Sikandarji 09:42, 22 April 2006 (UTC)
Kolkata FAC
[edit]Yo - I read your response on going for Kolkata's FAC, and I think you should go for FAC now - I'll help you cover the ground in terms of incorporating the criticism, etc. whenever you're busy. Its only a 5-day process, so no point in delaying the fruition of your good work. What d'ya say? Rama's Arrow 20:12, 22 April 2006 (UTC)
- No don't wait for Jinnah's approval. Most of the work there is done, and I can help out full-time on Kolkata. Go for FAC once Nichalp's review is done. Everything will work out. Rama's Arrow 20:19, 22 April 2006 (UTC)
- Dont worry - basically the community works together to approve an FAC - all you get is legit criticism or support. No politics, usually, like in an Rfa. Rama's Arrow 20:42, 22 April 2006 (UTC)
- Excellent - have no worry. I'll pay close attention to the process, and I'm sure that all criticism will be constructive. Cheers, Rama's Arrow 17:52, 23 April 2006 (UTC)
Coords
[edit]Hi. The coord header is based on the one in the infobox — they appear different because the first appears in dms (degrees, minutes, seconds) while the latter only appears as degrees. Thanks. Saravask 20:56, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit]Hi - you've done the work, now focus on cutting people up in your hospital! hehehe.... It was important that you yourself nominate the article, given you did most of the work. PINQ - just a suggestion
[edit]Hi, I think it may be better to keep changing the time when you ask the questions. 11 p.m. would be too late for many of the people from India. --Gurubrahma 18:53, 23 April 2006 (UTC)
Calcutta
[edit]It must be very late in Calcutta by now! I have made a few changes to History of Calcutta as well. When I have time I will delve more deeply into Hickey's memoirs as they are a tremendously rich source on the social life of the city in the late 18th century, something largely lacking in that article at the moment. A lot of the details about Plassey are to be found at Robert Clive, which I've also been working on. I don't know if you've had a look at it. All the best, Sikandarji 20:01, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

Bangla-Bengali
[edit]Hi - what is the correct version - "Bangla" or "Bengali?" I'm skeptical about the former. Rama's Arrow 23:44, 23 April 2006 (UTC)
Hi, Thanks for the message last night. I put a message regarding the positioning of the "History of the name" information for the Kolkata article in its FA nom, just to draw attention to it. --soUmyaSch 05:38, 24 April 2006 (UTC)
- Yeah thats why I put it up for discussion to see if a better solution comes out. --soUmyaSch 05:46, 24 April 2006 (UTC)
- Don't get me wrong. I am not saying it has to be moved. What I am trying to find out is if there is a better way to incorporate the naming info without overburdening the lead, in case the naming information is not too large to justify a separate section. If we are successful in finding a better solution, if it exists, the article will become one that can be emulated.
- Please don't remove the "Black Hole" discussion. Its very important and removing it from discussions may make someone strongly object to the article as lacking comprehensiveness. Of course this is my personal view and you may wait to see if anyone does at all complain about it being missing. -Ambuj Saxena (talk) 08:18, 24 April 2006 (UTC)
- Pronunciation added. Confirm if accent and pronunciation is correct or not. I have no clue about IPA. You might want to ask Rama's Arrow or Nichalp. They should be able to help. -Ambuj Saxena (talk) 11:29, 24 April 2006 (UTC)

Edits
[edit]Hi! I've removed the Black Hole info as it seems to jump. Two points on it I'd like to add on the topic:
- As long as it's mentioned in the History of Kolkata, nobody will object in FA as long as you mention that the =History= is a summary of main events, and the event itself requires the addition more detail, which is unnecessary.
- The article is not authored to the cater to the knowledge of just Europeans.
I'd like you to reevaluate the =External links= section. Include sites which talk about Kolkata as a whole, not pieces. Place more value on information that those sites contain.
About the images: Could you get an updates image for the adda and Writer's Building? Also a pic of a newspaper stall (Bengali papers shown clearly) would be a suitable addition to the Media section.

Alpha Phi Alpha
[edit]thanks for you assitance on this article, however; i thought wiki rules only required to have wikilink just one in each article. Cornell University and Ithaca, new york are linked in the fraternity box to the right, and Howard University was linked in the first paragraph. Your link for Alpha Men is highlighted in red, which means there is no link, and this will cause a problem since the article is a candidate for Feature Article. Can you review your changes and let me know if you still think they are in accordance with wikirules? I do appreicate your efforts to improve the article. Ccson 18:00, 24 April 2006 (UTC)

Minor suggestion
[edit]Hi Dwaipayanc, looks like the FAC is going really well. Good job so far, just stay on your toes to answer any questions/concerns users may have. I have a minor suggestion — perhaps we can add an IPA pronounciation guide to Kolkata. It will be /kəʊl'kɑθə/. (click "edit this page" and copy and paste the code) I know we already have audio, but IPA will benefit those without audio-enabled PCs or those researching this article from a public library. Thanks AreJay 01:40, 25 April 2006 (UTC)
- Oops, I noticed that Nirav and Nichalp are already helping you with this. Ignore this message if you already have an answer. Thanks AreJay 01:47, 25 April 2006 (UTC)

Sardar Patel
[edit]Hi Dwaipayan - I know you're busy, but could you please examine Sardar Patel? I want to finish all preparations for FAC by tomorrow - unfortunate delay so far - and would really welcome some fresh advice. I'm on lookout for fancruft and lack of thoroughness, plus the need to reduce size. Rama's Arrow 16:42, 25 April 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks. No real rush. Rama's Arrow 16:48, 25 April 2006 (UTC)
- I concur with you that many sections in the article are "not" well written, and are stuffed with fancruft and too many details - I had a gut feeling something wasn't sitting right. This is because I had originally expanded the article in Oct-Nov '05, then added citations in Jan-Feb, and began my third assault now. In this period my writing style changed dramatically. Thank you for being candid - this insight was very valuable. I'll do my best to fix these issues tomorrow. Rama's Arrow 18:24, 25 April 2006 (UTC)
- I've addressed the issue of noting the authors of the citations. I agree on no-space for refs. I argued that in British English, passive voice is well-used, but I maybe wrong. The remaining point to be addressed is finding more books as references, which I leave to you. Rama's Arrow 20:02, 25 April 2006 (UTC)

Bangla in talk page
[edit]We're not discussing anything important in Bangla, I don't see why anyone else will have a need to read the dialogue. I don't think anyone reads talk pages for entertainment :) Loom91 05:59, 26 April 2006 (UTC)
Chandril
[edit]I'm actually not a fan of Chandril's articles. His lyrics are good, but in articles his convoluted writing style and forced stylisation is not really to my taste. I don't create a lot of stubs, I usually write articles only when I can get them to a certai quality. I'm not sure I'll be able to do the same for Chandril or the Wetlands. I'll have to research through newspapers and frankly after all the studies I don't have that much time or energy. If I have time then I'll try. Loom91 06:05, 26 April 2006 (UTC)

Congrats on getting Kolkata up to Featured status! I must admit I must have put you through hell with my repeated and often exacting critique, but you have been courteous enough to respond to all of my queries. As I had mentioned in the Kolkata peer review I am a perfectionist and my reviews analyse the subject from many angles. In the end it paid off well as there were only direct support votes, and a minor oppose vote. I liked your policy of converting red links into stubs, it was one of my tricks in enhancing the presentation of the article. I hope you have learned what it takes to get an article featured, and it propels you to get related geography topics such as West Bengal and Bengal featured in the near future. Comments
[edit]I still think it needs a few finishing touches to the page:
- IPA script: User:Muchness can write the 2
- Aural rendering of the page: Ambuj (I recommend that the edits on the page be stabilised first (<10 per day)
- SVG locator map: standardised -- common problem for all cities. Am working on it.
- SVG map of the city: This is something new, will get back to you later.
- More interwiki links: Check out the India page. It has more than 140 iw links, most of them have been my doing.
Regards, =Nichalp «Talk»= 09:18, 29 April 2006 (UTC)
- PS Pleas could you put a Talk link in yr sign? Thanks =Nichalp «Talk»= 09:19, 29 April 2006 (UTC)
Replying:
- SVG map of the city -- Scalable Vector Graphics are vector (in this case XML) based and allows a user to upscale or downscale an image. For example the Image:Flag of India is an SVG graphic, when dowloaded, can be printed at any resolution without loss of quality or pixellation. To make a map, one would have to find a good city map and trace the borders, streets etc and save it as SVG.
- interwiki: My understanding is logic based. Arabic, Cyrillic and Hebrew were a problem but I managed to get most of the rest. Search around the India article for Mumbai/New Delhi and Kolkata should also be there.
- I meant putting a link like my signature: «Talk» which directly takes you to my talk page. Do this in the special:preferences area.
- Calcutta needs an IPA

[edit]Hi Doc (hope you don't mind the term of endearment) - I'm sorry about the repeated delay on finishing work on Patel. I've been a bit sick (cold-cough-hayfever) all week, and while its ok as such, I couldn't find the brainpower to concentrate on the article. But I will definitely do the work on Sunday, and in the meantime, I hope you can give it a final scane sometime soon and lemme know your opinion.
Thanks for your compliments and encouragement on my ER. The problematic edits that came during the Nirav.maurya - era were only becoz of my belief that I would spend roughly a month on Wikipedia offloading the immense info I had on India's independence movement and Hinduism. I didn't care about FAs, or the Wiki-community back then, nor did I understand how to make writing NPOV and factual - thus I found Gurubrahma's criticism especially enraging. I only forced myself to face my addiction in November, and registered as Rama's Arrow. Reading Gurubrahma's criticism again, and visiting his work told me what issues I needed to address. - Hope you'll be back soon. May will be HOT (pun intended). Rama's Arrow 18:55, 29 April 2006 (UTC)
- I shall come to Kolkata to slay you (or pay off a bhai) if you miss my RfA - hope to do that around early June. Rama's Arrow 19:00, 29 April 2006 (UTC)
- Hehehe...no sweat, jus playin'. These things aren't that important. All the best for your studies and exams. Rama's Arrow 19:05, 29 April 2006 (UTC)
- Yes I will attend to that after Patel tomorrow itself. One of the reforms needed is to integrate the revolutionary activities by time period - for example, Bhagat/Azad in 1930s, Ghadar in 1910s, Bengal revolutionaries (most) between 1890-1930. Rama's Arrow 19:11, 29 April 2006 (UTC)
- Important - what do you think of the placing of the Pakistan movement? Technically the League was never a part of the freedom struggle. There are also issues with other political parties like Liberals, Hindu Mahasabha who were never involved in freedom struggle. The correct political atmosphere must be depicted.
