Ghatak

[edit]

Unfortunately, very little seems to have been achieved. My knowledge abt Ghatak is very general and nothing closed to that of Ray, and I don't have access to book related to him right now.--ppm 06:11, 12 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Birbhum & Biography

[edit]

Thanks for your comments. I will try to follow your suggestion (check email). More specific data about Birbhum demography can be found here: http://www.wbcensus.gov.in/DataTables/01/FrameTable2_4.htm (please explore the top menu). About Biography I dont remember writing any in english wiki, but yes I wrote/improved many in bn.wiki including Upendrakishor raychaudhury উপেন্দ্রকিশোর রায়চৌধুরী, Vidyasagar etc. --Dr.saptarshi 13:55, 12 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to withdraw my nomination for Birbhum District because I understand that the article needs more effort before it can be put up. However, I would like to improve it further. Please have a look at it as it is now and suggest improvements. Most of the districts hardly have anything on their pages. This district at least has quite a bit of information, thanks mainly to Dr.saptarshi.
As regards biographies, the choice in a listing is always focussed on the top few – Rabindranath, Subhas Bose and so on. The numerous other people are always relegated to the category listing. You will find that my work has basically been with the “second rung”. As regards the top, too many people are already focussed there and I have no intention of going and fighting there. I am happy with the work that others do not want to do. Therefore, I would not have much personal interest in such a venture but you can think about it.
Culture is a major area of weakness in the West Bengal portal. Please see what you can do to improve the visibility of cultural topics. -- P.K.Niyogi 22:17, 12 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re FAC

[edit]

I agree, the trend was not healthy. I was busy with college the last few days, and yeah, I was in a sort of dilema. I gave some tips on their talk pages and through orkut. Anyhow, the FAC has been closed now. The article needs some good copyediting, and weeding of the POVs, and I think it'll be ready to go back there soon.--thunderboltz(Deepu) 06:37, 14 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Happy Diwali!!!
Known as the "Festival of Lights" in India, Diwali symbolises the victory of good over evil. It represents celebration of hope and life, and is an occasion to strengthen relationships. This year, it is celebrated on December 18, 2024. I take this as an occasion to wish you the best in the days to come. May this Diwali invigorate you, bringing you more happiness and content. Happy Diwali!!!

RU and other topics

[edit]

Hi, hope you're getting less and less busy :)

If and when you have time, pls take a look at Rajshahi University. I know its a slightly esoteric topic on which I can't expect you to know anything, but even copyediting or general comments will be useful. I think its quite near to a plausible FA drive.

A new topic in Bangla film/literature will be great. I have personal weakness for Pather Panchali, Charulata and Jibanananda Das. The problem with all 3, though, will be paucity of pictures. This seems to be a fundamental problem.--ppm 00:20, 25 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for taking so much interest in Birbhum District. I am working on a map and once I do it, I have requested Antorjal to improve upon it. I have requested the PR department of Durgapur Steel Plant for some photographs of Birbhum. I hope to get them in a week or a little more. Please see the notings for the photographs with the Durgapur article. I want to be sure about what I write before uploading the photographs. Re:references

[edit]

Thanks for the messages on the references. It looks like your work has paid off and WB is going to be a FA soon. I'll update the reference as soon as I get a hold of the book again (since it was borrowed from the library, I will have to go there and get it but that won't be much of a problem). I'll also work on the Birbhum map per suggestions. As you might have noticed, I haven't had any time the last 10 days for wikipedia due to other pressures and I am hoping to clear the back log this weekend. I'll put a formal response on the FAC page in the meantime. Take care. --Antorjal 18:29, 27 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've updated the reference with page numbers and also the edition (after reverificiation). I have updated to the newest edition of the book. Thanks for the information. It looks like the FAC will go through probably.

just to be sure

"The Bengal famine of 1770 claimed as many as 3 million lives." - i see Amartya Sen's work as the reference. when I used the ref in Bangladesh, it referred to the 1943 "Great Bengal Famine". Its quite possible that he also discussed 1770, I just wanted to point this out.--ppm 19:00, 27 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Ya. I noticed the changes. I have West Bengal watchlisted and I've noticed the amazing edits that you've made over time to get it to FAC. It looks like a no-brainer though. West Bengal will be another feather in you cap. Just curious, why haven't you been nominated for adminship? You've made a lot of outstanding contributions. I'd do it in a heartbeat if I had been here for longer, but I hope some of the "seniors" take notice. Anyways, take care. --Antorjal 00:30, 30 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You know, you're such a good editor. I'll support the article after you include the arsenic problem. I don't know how new the land acquisition problem, so it is okay for me to put 1-2 sentence in the Economy section. Good luck. — Indon (reply) — 11:28, 30 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Dwaipayanc. I don't have very strong views about what goes there. I just selected them by default because they were FAs FLs, and but and Ambedkar one there after checking a few bios to see what was the best quality. Of course, you can get a rotation system going, but atm, my priorities lie elsewhere - mainly fixed articles which are in very dreadful shape, like Rahul Dravid, and in future, stuff like Sourav Ganguly. Thanks, Blnguyen (bananabucket) 07:11, 31 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re FAC

[edit]

There have been a lot of comments on the West Bengal FAC. I'll look through those this evening. I'm sorry for not being able to help much more. Work pressures have been much greater lately but I will have some time this evening. I'll also go through Panta bhat and Pithe... Don't know much about Mohua but I'll create the stub.

I do have access to a lot of books as you have mentioned. You would be surpised though because I am in a small city, Columbus, Ohio in the US Midwest. The thing is my city's library was voted the best in the US and I am use it to the fullest extent possible ;)--Antorjal 15:40, 1 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've added some comments on the Pithe and Panta bhat articles. Take a look at Oriya cuisine if you get the time. It is surprisingly similar to Bengali cuisine. Best. --Antorjal 16:06, 1 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I've done a lot of edits to West Bengal. All of them were basically copyediting revisions without any change in substance. Please take a look. I think this should please many of the objections. You are right. P.K.Niyogi is doing a tremendous job. Getting inspired from him, I just wrote Hiralal Sen. :) Take care. --Antorjal 03:06, 2 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

November Esperanza Newsletter

[edit]
Program Feature: Admin Coaching (needs coaches!)
Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach.

Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.

What's New?
The Tutorial Drive is a new Esperanza program! In an effort to make complicated processes on Wikipedia easier for everyone, Esperanza working to create and compile a list of tutorials about processes here on Wikipedia. Consider writing one!
A discussion on how Esperanza relates to the encyclopedia has been started; please add your thoughts.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  • The list of proposed programs has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  • There is now a new program: the Tutorial Drive! Consider writing a tutorial on something you are good at doing on Wikipedia.
  • The suggestion of adding a cohesive look to all the Esperanza pages is being considered; join the discussion if you are interested!
  • In order to make a useful interlanguage welcome template, those involved in translation projects will be asked what English Wikipedia policies are most important and confusing to editors coming from other language Wikipedias.
  • A discussion of Esperanza's role in Wikipedia is being held, with all thoughts of all Esperanzians wanted!
  • Shreshth91 informed everyone that he will be leaving the Esperanza council as life is rather busy; his spot will be filled by the runner up from the last election, HighwayCello.

Kadambini Ganguly

[edit]

Thanks for your suggestions. I was thinking about the West Bengal portal and felt that we should put in the women also. That lead me to the Kadambini Ganguly page and I expanded it. After I finished, I thought why not place it in DYK? First graduate and doctor were there in the original article and so I did not use it as lead for DYK. I did not use the libel material here. May be, I will use it elsewhere soon. I am now expanding Motilal Sheel, interesting character. Will also put it up for DYK. -- P.K.Niyogi 23:35, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for all the support. I was very happy to see Kadambini Ganguly on the Main Page but am a bit surprised at the vandalism. Perhaps many people found it difficult to accept the facts. The final wording was changed by them. It was on the lines suggested by you. I have not been able to locate much material about Peary Charan Sarkar, although I have the basic information. Let me try a little more and then I will put it up. I think I will put up Tagore family for DYK. Do you think something more should be added? Regards -- P.K.Niyogi 03:19, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
By vandalism, I did not mean the change in the DYK fact. I have noticed that they are sometimes changing it. Please see the history sheet of Kadambini Ganguly and you will understand. The information must have been so uncommon for many people that the moment they saw it on the Main Page they reacted. It has not happened with other DYKs. Fortunately, the Admins were alert and rectified two of the acts of vandalism. They missed another one - I rectified it. Regards -- P.K.Niyogi 04:39, 11 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
