Aphids
Just wondering, how certain are you that the critters in the photo Image:Lice macro.jpg are lice? I'm pretty sure they're what we would call "aphids" in English. I see that the German word for "aphid" is a (one of your many) compound noun, "Blattlaus", that literally means "leaf louse"; was that why you labelled them "lice"?
And, since I seem to be the first posting on your "User talk" page, welcome to Wikipedia! Even if it has been, what, at least four months that you've been here. --John Owens (talk) 10:30, 2005 Mar 27 (UTC)
- You are right, i meant aphids. Lice is a translation error. I'll change the caption, and I should probably reupload the image with a correct filename. --Dschwen 11:52, 28 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Pic of the Day
Hi Daniel,
Just to let you know that your photo Image:Petrified wood closeup 2.jpg is up for Pic of the Day on the 6th April. You can edit and correct the associated caption at Wikipedia:Picture of the day/April 6, 2005. -- Solipsist 11:25, 3 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Invitation
Hi Dschwen, you made some very nice timelines some time ago. I would like to invite you to read and comment on my project proposal for a Grand Unified Timeline of Human History. Erik Zachte 8 July 2005 23:08 (UTC)
- That's a pretty good idea. We should start drafting some more concrete guidelines on what to put in the timelines of different "zoom-levels". I'd propose a section for singular events in history, like the atomic bombings of Hiroshima_and Nagasaki, first moon landing or sputnik or the invention of the steam engine. Secondly it is a sad fact, that mankind is constantly at war with 15 armed conflicts going on right now (List_of_wars_1990-present). War (and the aftereffects of colonisation) is what mostly determines our borders today, so I would sugest a section for it (wars between nations, civil wars, colonisation, maybe insert acts of terrorism as well). Should the differernt aspects of the GUT be separated into their own barsets (like the Roman Empire timeline), or intermixed and just differentiated by color? --Dschwen 9 July 2005 09:20 (UTC)
- Dschwen, quite amazing little script you wrote. I might incorporate it into EayTimeline as an optional tool. Maybe we better present periods of peace instead of war, it will save ink on the printer :) I copy your comments to the GUT talk page so that others can read it. And raise the case about what barsets to use in the main article. Erik Zachte 02:22, 11 July 2005 (UTC)

Since You're in Goe-town, and I am not (at least for the moment), could You check the legitimacy of the label "Frog's Penis" for the leaning pillar by the new SUB (gien as the label for the photo at Wik's SUB site). I worked for the SUB for about five years and never heard the moniker - in any language. KIM

RfA vote
Dschwen, I wanted to drop you a line to ask if you'd be interested in voting on my admin candidacy. I've seen you a lot in voting on FP's and thought you might have a somewhat good or positive idea of me and what kind of work I do. I'm kind of having a personal tiff with a certain user right now and would appreciate your vote if you feel i'm qualified enough. I also answered the usual questions at the bottom of my nomination form you can read if interested. Just thoguht I'd see if you'd help me out with it. Thanks and I'l lsee you around the FP's I'm sure. --ScottyBoy900Q∞ 22:41, 10 October 2005 (UTC)
Maps
Your idea for a simple mapping interface is great! I've been looking all over the Web for good, public-domain, usable (and free) tools, and finding very little. I'm working on making locator maps easy to use, particularly in Infoboxes, and I've made a couple (US, Australia) based on SVG files I found. I can use SVG and clean it up to look like the map guidelines, but I need good source files.
So do you need help? And can I play with your demo implementation? (If so, does it have global high-res outline data loaded?) Please let me know. And thanks for your good work, —Papayoung ☯ 05:01, 3 November 2005 (UTC)
- By all means play with the implementation. Maybe set up some extra pages for toying around. I do have HiRes outline data, but please be aware that the mapprojection is still rather simple so it looks best for smaller areas closer to the equator. --Dschwen 07:50, 3 November 2005 (UTC)
- Thank you. What is the underlying map software you're using? And can it output .svg, .ps or .eps versions of the files? —Papayoung ☯ 15:59, 3 November 2005 (UTC)
- Dynamap is the map software. I use a library to decypher the shp (shape) files and generate SVG code with a self-written C program. The generated SVG is then converted to PNG (using rsvg). --Dschwen 16:07, 3 November 2005 (UTC)
- Hey , we have implemented a mapping application using Mapserver ( which takes as input shapefiles and gives a png image) .We wanted to integrate this with MediaWiki. Hence we wanted some help from your extension. We can not find the source code. From where do we retrieve it ?
- Plz reply soon.
- THanks ,
- Munira
- check User:Dschwen/Dynamap (click edit article, to see the source code). This is only the MW integration, but my extensieon creates SVG anyways. --Dschwen 08:05, 11 March 2006 (UTC)
- Hey thanks .Another thing if i have to make this extension work on my wiki ( i.e my localhost ) i just need to make appropriate changes to the LocalSettings.php file and add this php file to the extensions directory , right? Is there anything else to be done ? Also what is the maps.inc ?
Disambig fix needed at Template:Roman Empire
Greetings. Template:Roman Empire contains a disambiguation error: "Pantheon", linked in two places, should refer to Pantheon, Rome in both instances. can you fix this? Cheers! BD2412 T 05:39, 5 December 2005 (UTC)
- Fixed it, but apparently EasyTimeline changed a bit, so I'll have to make further adjustments in the next days. --Dschwen 13:17, 5 December 2005 (UTC)
Pic of the day
Hi Daniel,
Just to let you know that your photo Image:Golden Gate Bridge by night.jpg is due to make an appearance as Pic of the Day on the 17th December. As this will be a weekend, it should also appear on the Main Page. If you get a chance, you can check and improve the caption at Wikipedia:Picture of the day/December 17, 2005.
Roman Empire
Hi Dschwen, good to see you working on the Roman Empire timeline. I wish I could do more on it myself. But I am currently limited in the amount of computer work I can do, besides my job, so I have to focus on wikistats job, EasyTimeline script update and such. In the Roman Empire did you leave out the 'Developments' block on purpose? It is really concise, maybe unintelligible without prior knowledge but a concise recapitulation/rehearsal after one read some articles. What do you think? [1]
The icon is very nicely done. But what will be shown on browsers that do not have proper SVG support ? (which is most, even Firefox only brought it in 1.5) Why not a properly sized png ? Best regards, Erik Zachte 00:34, 15 December 2005 (UTC)
- Oh I see it is a png rendered from a svg. New mediawiki feature I guess. Never seen it before. Erik Zachte 00:37, 15 December 2005 (UTC)
- Yeah, I noticed it myself today :-). I haven't started with the Developments block yet. I'll have to take another look at your version. --Dschwen 00:39, 15 December 2005 (UTC)
Thanks
Hi,
Thanks for making the picture of the Golden Gate Bridge freely available! I've included it as an illustration on p. 167 of my physics textbook at http://www.lightandmatter.com/area1book1.html . The book is dual-licensed, with one of the licenses being the GFDL, and you are credited in the photo credits in the back of the book.
--Bcrowell 03:40, 17 December 2005 (UTC)
- Sure thing, glad to hear the pic could be put to further use :-) --Dschwen 10:49, 17 December 2005 (UTC)
Hello again,
I liked the photo so much that I used it on the cover of my new calculus textbook: http://www.lightandmatter.com/calc/ . The book is of course GFDL-licensed, and you are properly credited as the photographer.
--Bcrowell 05:41, 19 January 2006 (UTC)
- Hey, its really neat how you juxtaposed it with the stylized function graph! Maybe its time to brush up my calculus again :-) --Dschwen 07:21, 19 January 2006 (UTC)
Flamarande
I want to thank you for adding the graphical timeline in the "roman republic infobox". I think the "location" of it is also very nice (of course, :) ). Tell me how many of these graphics do you have? Flamarande 16:55, 20 December 2005 (UTC)
- You mean how many of these timelines do I have? I spent most of my work on the Roman Empire timeline, although I was experimenting with timelines on the history of wars, and planned on doing one on cultural movements (but postponed that to later). For now I'll work on the Roman Republic timeline, the idea is sometime to have interlinked timelines for the whole history of mankind (meta:Grand_Unified_Timeline_of_Human_History) --Dschwen 17:04, 20 December 2005 (UTC)
Hmm, To claim that a "certain date and event" as a "decisive turning point" is in reality factually wrong, and in fact mostly imposed by hindsight and common consensus.
A good example: When did Hitler lose the WWII? At the battle of Stalingrad ? Even if the German army had conquered Stalingrad (a not impossible feat) they would eventually lose another major battle against the russians. The russian armies were at that date not only outnumbering them in quantity and quality (disputed) but also due to Hitler´s megalomania simply better led (not even mentioning General Winter).
So why do we consider Stalingrad as the turning point? It could be the battle for Britain, Pearl Harbour as it led the USA into the WWII, or (my favourite one) the second in which german troops began operation Barbarossa?
Answer: By common consensus.~
Sorry for being late but here it goes: Fröliche Weinachten und ein frohes Neue Jahr. Flamarande 20:36, 28 December 2005 (UTC)
An FPC vote of yours
I notice you withdrew your support for the second image of Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/Crepuscular ray sunset from telstra tower as the 2nd does not appear in an article. I'm just letting you know that Fir0002 has promised that if the second is promoted he will upload it over the first, so it is still a valid FPC candidate. Raven4x4x 06:50, 25 December 2005 (UTC)
- Yeah, but I don't really think it adds that much to the article anyway. Pretty pic though, I'll leave it to others to vote on that one :-) --Dschwen 13:58, 29 December 2005 (UTC)
Will you comment on a potential FPC?
Hello Dschwen - This is Debivort, the FPC contributor who made the annotated San Juan Panorama, about which I valued your comments. I was wondering if you had time to comment on another potential FPC that I am making. You can find it here. Thanks if you have time! - Debivort 09:48, 5 January 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for the thoughts on the morphology image. I am making it in Adobe Illustrator. I am not familiar with the SVG format, but would be happy to format it that way, assuming I dont have to do it all again from scratch ;-) Do you know about Illustrator and SVG? Also, is it possible to set the thumbnail manually? If so, several close ups from the image could make attractive thumbs, like Rosette or Whorled or Tripinnate. Thanks again Debivort 10:51, 5 January 2006 (UTC)
- As far as I know, Illustrator can save as SVG, so no additional effort needed. Not sure about adding hyperlinks though. --Dschwen 11:03, 5 January 2006 (UTC)
- Maybe there should be a Featured Illustration category, separate from FP?Debivort 10:54, 5 January 2006 (UTC)
- I agree. It has been discussed before, maybe you should suggest it again. --Dschwen 11:03, 5 January 2006 (UTC)

I have tried saving the image in SVG format(new version), but seem unable to do so while still maintaining font quality (see esp. the labels in the margin section). Any suggestions? Are you an expert in the format, or could you point me to someone who is? Thanks.
- Tough one. You do not need an SVG expert but an Illustrator expert. Part of the problem is that Adobe Illustrator saves the drop-shadow as a bitmap. The bitmap is created using your special font. All other text is formatted like in an HTML file, with a style sheet requesting a particular font, which is likely not installed on the users computer, so the text gets rendered using a replacement font, which in turn looks different than the drop-shadow-bitmap. I do not know if you can actually embed fonts into SVG. That would be a solution, but I'd stick to standard fonts anyhow, just like HTML files do not use fancy fonts. That would also mean that you could match the diagrams fonts exactly to the fonts used in the wikipedia text, no matter which computer is used to display it. --Dschwen 22:52, 5 January 2006 (UTC)

FPC
It is normal on such pages which depend only on votes (AFD, RFA, and even the arbcom voting system) to identify those who are potentially sockpuppets, or those who are completely new to the system and may not understand how it works. That's all I've done. To call it "stalking" is to say that there is something difficult about clicking on someone's contributions. — 0918BRIAN • 2006-01-16 15:01
- A user without even a userpage makes me suspicious as well, but since wikipedia is not about voting the user should be judged by the quality of his comment. I don't know if tagging of his commentaries is nescessary. But well, if it is consensus to do it then I appologise about the stalking. I just haven't seen it before. --Dschwen 15:20, 16 January 2006 (UTC)
Re: Toucan
What do you mean "The original was replaced in the article by you"? I've never edited that article. You might have mistaken me for someone else, or is there another toucan article I can't remember editing? You can be assured that whichever one is in the article now, after the vote I will put the most popular version in there.
Also, please don't restrict yourself to commenting on the edit. I'm interested to know how you feel about the original. Raven4x4x 23:38, 16 January 2006 (UTC)
- No problem! :) Raven4x4x 00:17, 17 January 2006 (UTC)

Super spider
Hi DSchwen I added your superb macro harvestman pic to Opiliones where it'll make an excellent contribution by helping people see the difference between harvestmen and spiders. On that note would you consider renaming the image? ~ Veledan • Talk 21:47, 25 January 2006 (UTC) p.s. I love the look of your map project too. Can't wait to use it to illustrate some articles :-)
- Thanks for pointing it out! I renamed it to Image:Harvestman macro.jpg. As for the map project, I'm reimplementing that as a php extension so that I can use an available coordinate transformation library, but the polygon clipping algorithm which i devised for cartesian coordinates is not fexible enough, sigh. --Dschwen 22:29, 25 January 2006 (UTC)
RE: Global city
Hi there! To ensure that the global city article doesn't succumb to favouritism – or, as some would say, favouritism above and beyond the GaWC list – the pictures for cities (as well as cities within the appropriate GaWC ranks) have been arranged in a neutral alphabetical order. This is also a commonly used abbreviation in edit summaries. I hope this helps. E Pluribus Anthony | talk | 15:50, 26 January 2006 (UTC)
Thanks on note regarding 3-D images
I wanted to thank you for your note to 3dnatureguy regarding some of his images, and their placement and documentation. While I want to him to continue to contribute, I'd like to see some better judgement from him in what he places into articles (Do they speak to the article, or are they just an example of output from the 3-D process) and how he places the images in general. I'd also like to see him provide a link to a solution so that viewers can learn more about 3-D images as well as sources where they can get the glasses for free. So again, thanks. Stude62 13:31, 1 February 2006 (UTC)
I also want to express my thanks and will take your advice to heart. Posting in 3D will be reduced, to a discreet lower profile. I will, when posible also pass on the 2D image to Wiki's purposes.3dnatureguy 19:27, 1 February 2006 (UTC)
- Great, I went through all pages, rearranged the pics and added the {{3d_glasses}} template. It looks pretty good now and I actually mailordered a pair of glasses yesterday :-) --Dschwen 19:38, 1 February 2006 (UTC)
Further from 3Dnatureguy: I think your glasses icon goes along ways to clarify the nature and expectations for the pictures. It is far better than any "clunky, arcane referece to "compatible 3D". It also allows an occassional, more extreme 3D image to be posted on a NASA, or science related article. This rule would ban highly effective electron microscope 3D images, and wonderful optical microscope images. In 1895 or so, the British Parliment passed a law requiring a man with a flag to preceed all motorcars, with the nominal pupose of alerting horses and buggies to beware. I think this is a well intended, but premature move to "throw the baby out with the bathwater". With your icon, and providing that I truly take note, defer to the sentiments of the several, and it is only several, offended editors, by desisting in further posting. This would give the real body of users, including kids, and oldsters from the 3D era, to speak up for, or against the inclusion of 3D. This would only come in sporadically, as Wiki real does not encourage the simple reader/users to comment much. From what I read on authoritive 3D sites, about 30 million pair of "anaglyph" glasses were shipped last year. Since you have been very candid in your noting my "sloppiness",... which I am working to remedy, your weighing in for some degree of moderation would be given considerable weight...I hope you consider doing so.3dnatureguy 04:12, 2 February 2006 (UTC)
Featured Picture candidate "Carbon Nanotubes"
Hi Dschwen. Thank you for your suggestions. I created a new picture instead of the old one which is much more educational. I would welcome any comments on its talk-page or over at Featured Picture Candidates. Mstroeck 18:30, 1 February 2006 (UTC)
- Yeah, very nice! I commented on FPC. The text is a problem, it is illegible as a thumbnail and not language neutral. I'd prefer a layout with all three illustrations and the text only appearing in the picture caption. --Dschwen 18:38, 1 February 2006 (UTC)
- Then you'll be delighted to hear that I got rid of the text and got in even more illustrations, so now all three types are represented in 3D and schematically ;-) Mstroeck 02:29, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

3D comons
Hi. Do you know if it would be possible to get the 3D commons logo that you have designed copyrighted to wikimedia so that it does not have to skate on being fair use? I wonder where we can ask stuff like that? --Martyman-(talk) 21:34, 6 February 2006 (UTC)
- Yeah, I'm wondering too. Maybe the mailinglist would be a good place. I'll check it out. The fair use is only a temporary solution for sure. --Dschwen 21:52, 6 February 2006 (UTC)
- It is on the way. I'm in contact with a foundation lawyer. --Dschwen 23:45, 6 February 2006 (UTC)
Moving the 3D images
I think we have gotten the majority of duplicates out of the list of images. I think that the easiest thing to do now would be to automatically move all the remaining images to commons and deleted the copies on the local wikipedia. Once that is done I might start going through and adding 3Dcommons templates and adding images to commons galleries for all the articles that merit it, and simply removing the images for others. The only other thing to watch out for is that some of 3dnatureguy's early uploads where tagged as non-commercial, though he seems happy for these to be corrected to a compatible license. --Martyman-(talk) 02:50, 9 February 2006 (UTC)
- Continue later, have to catch a train. --Dschwen 08:06, 9 February 2006 (UTC)
- Working on the remaining pics right now. My script warns me about every noncommercial pic, and I relicense it on commons with the edit summary "Relicensed in agreement with original uploader". Hope that's ok... --Dschwen 12:23, 10 February 2006 (UTC)
3dnatureguy
I can not understand why he is being so hard to communicate with. He is refusing to aknoledge my question about the licensing which has been asked multiple times now and is continuing to upload to wikipedi (en) rather than commons. He doesn't seem to understand that placing it on commons replaces the need to also put it here, as he is now adding (also available to commons) in his image descriptions. Maybe you could have a go gettign through to him, he is really starting to make my blood boil... --Martyman-(talk) 11:05, 17 February 2006 (UTC)
- And it's only getting worse. Just read all the new comments. :-( About the icon, I signed the contract last week to transfer the copyright to wikimedia foundation. And I still think it does quite a good job depicting its use. Anyway, the commons issue has been brought up numerous times an I just don't get why he isn't replying with a single word to it. Instead he writes novels about "Lord of the flies" and what not. --Dschwen 11:47, 19 February 2006 (UTC)

Hi Dschwen,
My name is Fernanda Viégas and I have been studying Wikipedia for a while now (you can see a paper I published on the subject here). I would like to ask you a few questions about your activities as a Wikipedia photographer and illustrator. I am fascinated by the pictorial side of Wikipedia and it would be great to hear about this community from one of its members. Would you be available for an email interview? Thanks, Fernanda.
- Sure why not. Use the "E-mail this user" tool to contact me. --Dschwen 19:22, 2 April 2006 (UTC)
- Hi, Dschwen. Thanks for agreeing to participate in the study. I tried contacting you via the "E-mail this user" tool but I got a message that there was no email assigned for you. Is there another way I could send you the survey? Thanks. — Fernanda 00:36, 4 April 2006 (UTC) | talk
Leadenhall Market edit
I support the correction to the lean that you have uploaded, so feel free to add it as an alternative. I noticed that lean while I was nominating it but in laziness, I left it as-is. :) The perspective is probably not perfect either, as both edges lean inwards towards the roof and as you mentioned, your correction does not address this. If I fully corrected this perspective issue, I suspect it would warp the image towards the roof to the point where it would not look very pretty. Creating good quality wide angle images, especially with panoramas, is full of compromises (and a touch of the black arts!). Diliff | (Talk) (Contribs) 11:51, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

Examples of FPC problems
I noticed you seem to find 'blown out highlights' especially anoying in pictures but I haven't exactly gotten a feel for them. Perhaps you could update Exposure (photography) with examples of underexposure/overexposure? I would then add your samples to Wikipedia:What is a featured picture?. You could just add them there and not the article if you wanted. Thanks!! -Ravedave 04:37, 13 April 2006 (UTC)
- I wanted to remake the exposure series picture which is currently in the article for some time. Guess I have a new motivation now :-) --Dschwen 06:50, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

- Prove it? What the hell?! I really do not appreciate the tone. It is actually up to you to prove it is a vio. It is not the same picture, check the sky. Well, it is the same view, but no wonder, the location is pretty confined. --Dschwen 20:42, 15 May 2006 (UTC)
- There you made me do it: Me on TOTR and first piece of the pano. Is that proof enough? I hope you are proud of yourself. Why would I have the fullsize image anyways? What's your theory? Did I hack into the Rockefeller Center? Huh? Oh yeah, let's see what comes next, are you going to accuse me of having faked the EXIF tags maybe? Grrrrrrrrrr! --Dschwen 21:00, 15 May 2006 (UTC)
- FYI, it was cold as hell up there, my fingers went numb after about 1h (!) of taking pictures (more here). You are warned, one crack about the stupid hat and anorak and I'll really snap. --Dschwen 21:04, 15 May 2006 (UTC)
