Deeksha, I received an email saying you've been blocked. What happened? Didn't you meet me in college yesterday about something - What is the issue? -Shirin--Shirin tejani (talk) 13:30, 3 September 2011 (UTC)
Yep, I'm ok with the new topic.
-Shirin--Shirin tejani (talk) 19:01, 11 August 2011 (UTC)
It appears that there's not much to do in the topic you've selected. Can you explain exactly what you plan to add to the existing work?

, but you should read the guide to appealing blocks first. A fluffernutter is a sandwich! (talk) 13:09, 2 September 2011 (UTC)I understand that you're a student in a Wikipedia-oriented course and that you're still learning the ropes, and I do not intend this to be an infinite-time block, but you must stop inserting copyrighted material into articles, and since a warning did not stop you from that, I've had to block you. Please discuss our copyright policy and how you can follow it with your class's ambassador; when you've done that, you and your ambassador should post here to your talk page explaining that the issue has been addressed and I will lift the block. Decline for now. We'd like to hear confirmation from the Wikipedia ambassador for your program that he/she feels that you understand the implications of the copyright policy. We also need you to explain that you now understand and will follow policy. either way (talk) 17:14, 4 September 2011 (UTC)
If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.
I am putting this on hold so that I can talk to Fluffernutter to see if he thinks an unblock is okay at this time. either way (talk) 14:06, 4 September 2011 (UTC)
Unblocked
[edit]I have unblocked you, per your ambassador's assurance that you now understand and will follow our copyright policy. Please be sure to read our copyright violation policy if you haven't already, and remember that as a general rule, you should not ever copy any text into a Wikipedia article - you must write any text that you put in an article yourself, using your own words. Good luck with the rest of your class! A fluffernutter is a sandwich! (talk) 13:55, 7 September 2011 (UTC)
Thanks alot! I have gone through the copyright violation policy and have understood it. I promise to follow all the rules from now on.Ds731992 (talk) 14:12, 7 September 2011 (UTC)

- Your text appears to be copied from a textbook, the same text appears here in Google Books. Please note that citing something as a reference does not give you license to copy it word-for-word, copyright does not work that way. Hairhorn (talk) 18:35, 11 September 2011 (UTC)
I have re-blocked this account, as it is clear that despite the ambassador's assurance, Ds731992 does not yet understand our copyright policy. Ds731992, I'm sorry, but we can no longer give you the benefit of the doubt. You will not be unblocked unless and until you can explain, in your own words and on this talk page, what our copyright policy is and why the additions you've been making to Socio-economic issues in India did not adhere to it, and convince me or another administrator that despite your repeated breaking of our rules in the past, you will no longer break them. COPYRIGHT VIOLATION ADDRESSED
[edit]Hi fluffernutter, I know I have been warned repeatedly about copyvios, I am really sorry that I did not adhere to wikipedia policies, but now i will make sure that i adhere to all the policies and not infringe any copyrights further. i completely understand that cut pasting is not allowed from copyrighted works as it would violate copyrights or constitute plagiarism. and i also realise that a work which is not copyrighted constitutes public domain and can be freely used by any one.
I did not realise while referring to books that i am violating copyrights as i tried my best to rephrase the language as much as possible. now i completely understand all the rules and policies, please unblock me as i have to complete the article on Socio-economic issues in India as a part of my assignment in college, so it would be really nice if you could unblock me at the earliest possible.
apologies again :) Ds731992 (talk) 18:26, 12 September 2011 (UTC)
Hey, you should go on the talk page of fluffernutter and drop a note there. Glad you understood the importance of copyright violation issues. Just make sure that you are not copy-pasting. Rephrase it in your own words and reference it properly. Enjoy editing! :) Nitika.t (talk) 18:58, 12 September 2011 (UTC)
- Hi! Actually, you should restrict your editing to your own talk page while you are blocked. :) Doing otherwise is likely to be seen as "block evasion" even if you mean well. I am writing you a note about copyright issues. Please be patient for a moment while I complete it. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 19:15, 12 September 2011 (UTC)
- Sorry, I didn't notice that the account was 're-blocked'. I was in no way encouraging block evasion. :). Trying to make sure that the students understand the importance copyright violations. We are taking several steps to resolve this issue. Nitika.t (talk) 19:54, 12 September 2011 (UTC)
Rewriting
[edit]Hi, Ds731992. :) Learning how to completely change source material so that it is not a copyright problem or a plagiarism issue can be very challenging. It doesn't help that different environments have different rules. For instance, on Wikipedia, you can't freely use public domain material; cutting & pasting that constitutes plagiarism, too. You have to not only cite your source, but also to indicate that you are copying it. See Wikipedia:Copy-paste.
Basically, on Wikipedia, you cannot copy any text that was published previously. There are two exceptions to this: (1) you can copy brief excerpts as clearly marked quotations provided that you give a good reference, that you mention in your text where you got it and that you use it for good reasons. (Wikipedia is bound by United States copyright law, and the US allows fair use quotations if you have good reason to copy content--such as to illustrate a particular point of view.) (2) you can copy as much of you want of content that is public domain or compatibly licensed so long as you give full attribution as explained at Wikipedia:Plagiarism.
Examples
|
---|
An example of a brief and clearly marked quotation, used for good reason:
Sometimes people copy text into quotation marks just because they can't think of another way to put it. It's better to avoid this. Quotes should usually be used where there is good reason, as with this case where we are conveying somebody's opinion. An example of proper attribution of a public domain text:
(I used a "template" to make that, so I didn't have to type it all. That one comes from Template:PD-old-text.) If you use a lot of the text, you'd put a note at the top of the reference section. Otherwise, you'd put it in the footnote. If that comes up, I can tell you easily how to do it. |
Outside of those two cases, you need to make sure that the language and structure of your work is your own. You cannot use striking or distinctive phrases from your sources, and you should ideally not draw too much information from any one source. I would recommend that you read through Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing, as this page can be very helpful in overcoming the trickiest part of rewriting content -- the one that evidently tripped you this time.
After you read through that, please let us know here if you have any questions or if you feel like you've got a grasp of the issues now. It's important that you do, because if you are unblocked, any future blocks are likely to be permanent. :/ For that reason, it's better to be extra careful on the issue and to rewrite even more thoroughly than you might think you need to.
After you are unblocked, if you aren't sure about text you want to add, it would really be a good idea for you to get feedback on it before you place it in the article. You are welcome at that point to come by my talk page, and I will give you feedback as quickly as I can. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 19:30, 12 September 2011 (UTC)
Hi! Thanks a lot for your help. i really appreciate it. i have gone through the links you have recommended. i have understood the whole concept of re- writing an article. i just hope that i am unblocked soon so that i can continue editing the articles following the guidelines instructed by you! I would definitely contact you on your talk page if i need your help in future.
Thanks again! Ds731992 (talk) 10:40, 13 September 2011 (UTC)
- Okay, you have been unblocked. If you still cannot edit other pages while logged in, please let me know here.
- I appreciate your reading those pages. It is important that you be careful with rewriting at this point to avoid a permanent block of your account. I am happy to help you if you are uncertain how to use content. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 10:48, 13 September 2011 (UTC)
Thanks a lot! yes i can edit other pages. i promise i will not violate any wikipedia policies from now on. For the first few edits i would really need your help as i dont want anything to go wrong again. i will send you my text on your talk page for your reviewing. thank you!

Reviewing your article
[edit]Hi. :) I'm happy to look at your addition.
First, though, I'll tell you that on Wikipedia we put new notes on the bottom of the page. It did not matter that you put your note on the top of mine; I saw it anyway. But the risk is that if you put your note on the top of the page it will not be noticed.
I also need to let you know that I cannot guarantee that nothing will be changed in the text that you place. Wikipedia is open to editing by anyone, and our articles are constantly evolving.
In terms of copyright, I compared the content you placed here to the one source you cite using a mechanical comparison tool, and I do not see any copyright issues. I also did a scan of the internet and google books looking for specific phrases, and I did not see any matches. I did not find any copyright issues. :)
Was the pdf that you linked the only source that you used? Does it sustain all of the information you added? While you don't have to put a citation after every sentence, you should certainly add a citation for things that other people might believe to be "original research." Since Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, which reflects what reliable sources have said about subjects, we can't put content in articles that we know to be true unless we can show who said so. There should never be a section in article that has no sources at all. Of course, there are plenty of articles on Wikipedia just like that, but the content in those sections is subject to removal by anybody. I would really recommend that you go into the article and offer a citation for information like "There is a direct linkage between education and economic growth. Here labour plays a very important role." Remember that since Wikipedia is "the encyclopedia that anyone can edit", we can't expect our readers to trust that we know what we are talking about...even if we do. :) We have to prove it to them by giving them a citation that they can follow up and read themselves if they like. (It doesn't have to be an online citation - print sources are usable, too.)
A good model here in the very article we are talking about is the one on Sanitation. You can see it has references scattered throughout (and has drawn on a number of sources, so we know that it may present a balanced view), but it does not have too many. You'll notice, too, that some of the references are used more than once. We see #14 recurring three times in the first paragraph alone. This is perfectly fine, and it's easy to refer to the same reference more than once. The first time you create the reference, instead of starting it like this: <ref>{{cite web....
, you start it like this: <ref name="Nickname">{{cite web....
. You can use any nickname for the reference that seems to fit. I myself often use the last name of the author or a keyword from the title. The next time you use that source for information, all you have to do is add this: <ref name="Nickname"/>
, and it will point to the reference identified by that nickname. Be sure to include the /
. If you forget that, it won't work. And I forget that occasionally. :)
I have put a courtesy tag on the article for you that says it is under construction (to use this tag, you put {{under construction}}
at the top of the page). This may help other editors to be more patient as you develop the material, since they will know that you are actively working on it. But I think you need to add citations for that section fairly quickly to avoid its being potentially removed.
If I may suggest something you might want to consider: it is not really clear in the text how the two sections you added apply specifically to the subject of "Socio-economic issues in India". Having established the difference between labor and knowledge based economies, you might want to address how that manifests in India. Remember that our readers come from all over the world, and many of them (like me) will have no idea if India is labor-based or knowledge-based or transitioning from one to the other. I am especially unclear how the formula to measure returns to schools applies to India, or why it is relevant in a discussion of India's socio-economic issues. I think you need to tie this all back to the subject of the article.
Good luck with your further development! --Moonriddengirl (talk) 11:44, 18 September 2011 (UTC)
Socio-economics issues in India review
[edit]hi, Deeksha
at the first look your article looks great :) i see that you have made good no. of contributions to your article, which is very good to start with, but there is still scope for improvement :)
check your references, some of them show errors,so correct that, also the equations mentioned are not proper, meaning they should not come in those boxes, as you must have noticed. so edit that, also consider adding a sidebar to your article, whatever you feel will be apt, so that it looks more wiki type. a suggestion is { {Economics sidebar} } copy paste this without the spaces between the brackets.
you can also consider adding more points to the section on economic issues.
the lead section of your article needs some improvement, add more to it so that the reader gets an idea about the theme of the idea. apart from all this great work :) Devanshi tripathi (talk) 18:51, 20 September 2011 (UTC)
