Welcome
[edit]Hi Dranster and welcome to Wikipedia. Thank you for your extensive additions to John Adams (educator). While I see no reason to doubt the accuracy of your contributions, it is considered standard Wikipedia practice to cite sources. In-line citations are best but a note in the References section is a good start. For further information, the article on writing better articles may be useful. Once again, thanks for your work. Good luck with your future contributions. Ando228 (talk) 19:11, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

Biographies
[edit]I would like to inform you of the following things:
- When talking about someone's life, e.g. early life, marriages, death, you must put them under the subheading 'Biography'.
- When you cite a references, you must use the code <ref>''Romeo and Juliet'', William Shakepeare</ref> right after the reference. Under the reference section, put the {{reflist}} code. Here is an example:

I would like this method to be used in Daniel Brewster and Sumner Welles, Welles in particular. There were two sections, References and Sources, and I want everything in 'sources' to be done with the <ref>Reference Here</ref> code. Otherwise, the info that comes from the references may be challenged. Kayau (talk) 05:22, 25 June 2009 (UTC)
If you are still not sure how it is done, read these guidelines, and these as well. Kayau (talk) 05:28, 25 June 2009 (UTC)
Same thing with Blackleach Burritt. Kayau (talk) 05:35, 25 June 2009 (UTC)

I've added some inline citation tags in some of your frequently edited articles. Please improve the citations, or those tags will never be taken away! Resolving Disputes
[edit]Hi Dranster, Just had a few more thoughts that might help you.
- Generally speaking Wiki likes to preserve content. So an editor should have a pretty good reason for deleting a sentence or section from an article. This generally makes the burden of proof, so to speak, with the editor who wants to delete. Usually when I delete something I cite a Wiki policy as my reason in the Edit Summary box. For example: "Removed self promoting sentence see WP:POV see also talk page". My use of that Wiki policy can still be disputed but it puts me on pretty solid ground to start. If it's an article where other editors are active I will then make an entry on the talk page saying what I did and why. This shows I am being up front with my edits and I'm a team player.
- If I am working on an article that is contentious and/or on probation then I would be more careful and I would go to the talk page first and give my proposal, get consensus and then make the change. If an editor skips that process and just makes a deletion without discussion than I would consider that to be poor behavior and I would bring it up (the content change not the behavior of the editor) on the talk page and get the support of other editors and then reverse the deletion by the offending editor.
- Reversing someone's edits needs to be carefully considered because no one likes it and it almost always gets an emotional reaction. If it goes back and forth between editors without a discussion or consensus then it becomes an edit war and this could lead to problems for one or both of the editors involved.If I revert someone's edit I always go to the talk page and explain why and get a dialogue going. Communication is key.
I hope that is helpful and again I applaud you for being man (or woman) enough to ask for help and be open to the learning process. You are a great addition to the Wiki team!--Kbob (talk) 21:24, 8 July 2009 (UTC)
re: Sarah Loring MacKaye
[edit]Hello, thanks for your message. I'm still not certain about the addition of this information to Steele MacKaye; not only does it contain numerous peacock words, which are unsuitable for inclusion anywhere, but it does not personally concern MacKaye himself, therefore giving undue weight to his sister. If she is notable enough, perhaps you can create an article dedicated to her accomplishments and family history. That way we can simply link to her with something along the lines of: "One of his sisters, Sarah Loring MacKaye (1841–1876), was a professional pianist and noted abolitionist." The goal is to keep the focus on the article's subject, which is of course Steele. María (habla conmigo) 15:08, 12 July 2009 (UTC)
- I understand, and I'm not saying that she be completely erased from her (arguably more notable) brother's life. As it is now, his sons receive far less attention than Loring MacKaye -- surely this is unfair. Even Benton, who was one of the most famous conservationists of his time, is only listed by name. Of course, because he has an article to himself, an entire paragraph about his accomplishments at his father's article is unnecessary. IMHO, the information which you wish to add (and even some of what is currently at the article) would be better suited at Sarah Loring MacKaye. María (habla conmigo) 18:05, 12 July 2009 (UTC)

Citing websites
[edit]See Wikipedia:References#Citation_styles. Notice that you only provided a URL for your web-based citations? Actually, you don't have to recite that lot every time because there is a good way to do it. It will make your references clearer and they won't need to click on it to verify. You can use the always handy {{[[:Template:Cite web|Cite web}} template. If you have any questions regarding the template, don't hesitate to ask! Wikipedia articles should not have slashes in the name of the article. If there should actually be a slash in the title, see Template:Wrongtitle and Wikipedia:Naming conventions (technical restrictions) for what needs to be done to name it properly. It seems like the name of the article should actually be Love Brewster, though. If that's the case, you can make the change by clicking move at the top of the page and filling out the simple form that appears. Let me know if you have any questions. Thank you for experimenting with Wikipedia. Your test worked, and the page that you created has been or soon will be deleted. Please use the sandbox for any other tests you want to do. Take a look at the welcome page if you would like to learn more about contributing to our encyclopedia.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hang on}}
to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion, or "db", tag; if no such tag exists, then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hang-on tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Deletion of content on William Brewster page - October 2011
[edit]Hi Dranster,
I see you have removed my recent edit referring to Richard More on the William Brewster page.
Whilst you are correct to say that the focus of this article is William Brewster, the page at present makes no mention of a child that Brewster presumably raised as his own. Richard More was on the Mayflower under Brewster's care, as multiple sources attest.
I intend to reinstate this edit, but I am offering the opportunity for you to comment, as is considerd good practice on Wikipedia.

Clarification sought in Marcius D. Raymond article
[edit]Hey, not sure if this is the right page for such an inquiry, but this paragraph is grammatically ambiguous and suggests a person born in 1833 fought in the American Revolutionary War as a private from Connecticut, even though that is impossible: He was a grandson of Mabel Gray, the daughter of John Gray and Elizabeth Skeel;[5] and Newcomb Raymond,[6] the son of David Raymond and Bethia Newcomb-Gray. He was one of the Proprietors and Pioneers of Sherburne, New York and had served in the American Revolutionary War as a private from Connecticut. He was at the Battle of Brandywine, Valley Forge and at the Siege of Yorktown. Mabel and Newcomb were the parents of ten children. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marcius_D._Raymond
I'm guessing it means his grandfather, but it's not clear. Wondering if I could get some clarification on that? Thanks.

Art+Feminism, Saturday, May 6, at Jacob Lawrence Gallery, UW Seattle
[edit]Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon Despite its wide reach, content on Wikipedia suffers from the bias of its editors: white, technically inclined, English-speaking men that live in developed, majority-Christian countries. This represents an alarming absence of voices in an increasingly important repository of shared knowledge. In an effort to change this, the Jake is organizing a Wikipedia Edit-a-thon on Saturday, May 6th, 1 - 5 pm. Our mission is to bring together diverse communities to participate in Wikipedia editing, and improve its coverage of queer people and women of color in the arts. We will provide childcare, snacks, and tutorials for the beginner editor. Bring your laptop, power-cord and ideas for entries that need updating or creation. No previous Wikipedia experience required! RSVP at and stay tuned to our Facebook page for updates. Wikipedia is one of the most wide-reaching repositories of shared knowledge, yet a 2011 survey found that less than 10% of its contributors identify as female, suggesting an alarming absence of voices. What and how information is shared is skewed by this gender disparity. To help change this, the Jacob Lawrence Gallery is organizing a quarterly series of Edit-a-thons to improve Wikipedia's coverage of womxn artists of color.
This Saturday afternoon's gathering will focus on creating, editing, updating, and expanding pages for womxn artists from Latin America and the Caribbean. The Edit-a-thon will feature a talk by Dan Paz, Lecturer in the UW School of Art + Art History + Design, an artist, and an educator who explores the labor of digital imaging production as a collaborative site where the intersections of the image-idea and lived experience are produced and contested. Through videos, photography, and sculptural projects that query the ability of documentary processes to be manipulated—to be multiplied and replicated, stopped and started, rewound and advanced—Dan works within the impossibilities of absolute replication to question the very ability of the image to truly represent. Everyone is welcome. Access to UW WiFi will be provided for non-UW affiliated participants. All you need to bring is your laptop, power cord, and ideas. No previous Wikipedia experience required! Childcare, snacks from local businesses, and editing tutorials will be provided. Please check the Facebook event page for updates. When: Saturday, May 12th, 1-5pm |

Wikipedia Day 2019 — curating images from Asahel Curtis and older Seattle photos
[edit]Tuesday evening, January 15, 2019, 6-9pm at Wayward Coffeehouse, 6417 Roosevelt Way NE #104, Seattle WA 98115 Wikipedia Day celebrates the anniversary of the founding of Wikipedia. This year in Seattle, Cascadia Wikimedians' celebration of Wikipedia Day will focus on a different closely related project: Wikimedia Commons, which (among other things) functions as the media repository for Wikipedia. When you see a photo or map in Wikipedia, or hear an audio clip, etc., it usually is hosted on Wikimedia Commons and "transcluded" into Wikipedia. Wikimedia Commons is a mix of users' own works and curated third-party content, either public domain or free-licensed. Our event is a hands-on workshop in curating third-party content, mostly early 20th-century photos of Seattle and other West Coast locations. Currently, Wikimedia Commons has two intersecting sets of older photos, one from the Asahel Curtis Photo Company and the other a more general set of Seattle images. At this meetup, we will celebrate the 18th anniversary of Wikipedia by further curating these images by the creation and addition of categories, adding ImageNotes where useful, linking other versions of the same photo, enhancing the descriptions, and identifying and correcting errors. User:Jmabel has already categorized over 1000 images and corrected several hundred wrong dates, misidentified buildings, and etc., but there is much more to be done. For more information, please see Wikipedia:Meetup/Seattle#Wikipedia Day 2019 — curating images from Asahel Curtis and older Seattle photos. |

Wikipedia’s gender trouble is well-documented. In a 2011 survey, the Wikimedia Foundation found that less than 10% of its contributors were women. While the reasons for the gender gap are up for debate, the practical effect of this disparity is not: content is skewed by the lack of representation from women.
Let’s change that. To help change this, the Jacob Lawrence Gallery is continuing a series of Edit-a-thons to improve Wikipedia's coverage of womxn and gender non-binary artists of color. Childcare, snacks from local businesses, and editing tutorials will be provided. All you need to bring is your laptop, power cord, and ideas. No previous Wikipedia experience required! 2019 US Banknote Contest
[edit]US Banknote Contest | ||
---|---|---|
November-December 2019 | ||
There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons. In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate. If you do not want to receive invitations to future US Banknote Contests, follow the instructions here |
