Pongal greetings

[edit]

Sir, I am writing to say how much I admire your active involvement in Wikipedia. I first came across your images and writings in Quit India Movement and then in Porbandar and Condenser (steam turbine). I don't feel competent to even praise your contributions, I can only say that I greatly esteem them, as admire the fact that a gentleman of your seniority is involved with computers and blogging. Your involvement supplies a major lacuna in the creation of an online encyclopaedia: the fact is that most editors are young and inexperienced; this youth makes for some intemperance and lack of restraint, apart from amateurism in subject-matter. In many senses, Wikipedia is privilaged to count you among its contributors.

I have been meaning to approach you and convey my regards for a long time, and decided that Pongal is a good enough occasion, if one is needed. Permit me to wish you and your family a prosperous Sankaranti and every happiness in the year ahead. Best regards, ImpuMozhi 03:25, 17 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Indian scripts

[edit]

Sir, regarding how to write in the Kannada script on a computer and using the normal English keyboard: one has to download one of several available softwares on the computer to do that. I personally use "Baraha" software because it allows us to write in several scripts (all four south Indian scripts plus Devanagari) and is also available free of cost for downloading.

In the past few minutes, I first de-installed and then re-installed the “Baraha” software on my own computer, so that I may be able to accurately describe the installation procedure to you. The process is not only simple but also quite quick. In fact, my description of the process will take longer to read than actually doing the process! Please do not be dissuaded from the length of my description. It looks long and complex, but actually it is very simple.

I very much hope that you will make use of my description and install the software. When you finish the installation procedure, please give me a message and I will describe further the easy ways of using the software.

Procedure for installing “Baraha” software
[edit]
  1. Please click on the link which is provided below:
    http://www.baraha.com/baraha60.htm
Note: It is a good idea to open this link in a separate window, so that you can read the procedure on this window and do the needful in the other window. To open the above link in a separate window, please drag your mouse to just touch the link. Then right-click the mouse (click the right side). A small window will open. In that window, select the second option which is "Open in new window".
  2. Then please go to nearly the end of that page, where, under the heading "Installation" we find the sub-heading "single-file installation". There we find the link with name "baraha60.exe". Please click on that name.
  3. Immediately a small window opens with three buttons: "Run", "Save" and "Cancel". Please click on the "Run" button.
  4. Next, another window will come up, asking "Publisher could not be verified. Are you sure you want to run this program?" Please answer "Run" (press the "Run" button).
  5. Next, the screen will change colour and the Baraha "Set-up wizard" will show up. It will recommend that you "close all other applications" but you can ignore that. Please press the "Next" button.
  6. Next, the "License agreement" screen will show up. There is no particular need to read anything, but we need to first select the button which says "I accept the agreement" and then press the "Next" button.
  7. Next, another window named "setup" with sub-heading "select destination folder" will show up. Please do not try to change anything here. Just press the "Next" button again.
  8. Next window to show up will have sub-heading "Select Start Menu Folder". Again, please do nothing except click the "Next" button.
  9. Next window will have sub-heading "Select additional tasks". Please confirm that there is a tick-mark in the "create a desktop item" box. In case there is no tick-mark, please click there and thus place the tick-mark. Then press "Next".
  10. Next window will have sub-heading "Ready to install". Please press the "Install" button.
  11. Now the software will start getting downloaded. This may take either a few seconds or a few minutes, depending on what kind of internet connection you have.
  12. Next, a small window comes up with sub-heading "Fonts Installation". Please press "OK" (there is really no need to read anything).
  13. Next, another small window will come up named "Language options". You can select any of the given choices for "Default Indian Language". However, please be sure to select "English" as the "User Interface Language". Then please press "OK".
  14. The next screen which becomes available is titled "Completing the Baraha 6.0 setup wizard". Please press the "Finish" button.
  15. The installation is complete! The "Baraha" screen will open up automatically. Now you can start using the facility of writing in any of the five given scripts.
  16. On the lower side of the screen, please type "dore chakravarti" and you will be able to see how the software works.

When you reach this point sir, please give me a message and I will do what I can to facilitate your further use of the software. Of course, if you have any trouble at any point in following the procedure for installation of the software, please let me know immediately and I will do what I can in the matter. I hope this helps. Regards, ImpuMozhi 06:00, 17 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

About myself

[edit]

Sir, the whole procedure for downloading "Baraha" will not take more than 10 minutes -- my process description actually makes matters look more complex than they are. Anyway, you can download at any time at your convenience.

About myself, I also have partly grown up in Bangalore, and my family traditionally hails from a village near Mysore, but I think we have another point in common: you also are not actually Kannadiga, am I right? Sir, am I mistaken in surmising that you belong to the Hebbar Iyengar community? Also, you could hardly have known of my Kannada connection unless you had taken an interest in my contributions, and I am flattered at the attention -- very unexpected! Thank you very much sir. ImpuMozhi 06:36, 17 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sir, thank you so much for sending me the link to the website about your family. In particular, I find the old photographs very interesting. You have a fine collection of images! Regards, ImpuMozhi 16:07, 17 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

FAC

[edit]

Hi Doreji, I wanted to let you know that an article I've worked a lot on recently, the Political integration of India is now FAC. I hope you will have some time to consider the work and give it an up or down vote. Please don't consider this soliciting - I'm requesting your participation. Thanks! Rama's Arrow 04:29, 24 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Doreji - This article focuses entirely on India's integration: accession of princely states and afterwards. Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan was not involved in the process of integrating the princely states. The editors have avoided issues regarding the freedom struggle and partition to simply stick to the objective. Rama's Arrow 22:22, 25 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thermal power plant

[edit]

Some anonymous user had mischievously vandalised the article on Thermal power station to put Headline Text with this edit. Someone else has fixed it by going to the page history and reverting to an earlier version of the article. No problem now. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 05:32, 3 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Meeting you

[edit]

Hello, once you had told that during your next visit to Chennai, you would like to meet me. You had told of February 2006, already over. We may talk over phone, if you e-mail me your telephone number. Thanks. --Bhadani 16:58, 3 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I am wishing you a happy Holi, the unique Indian celebration of color and brotherhood among all members of the humanity. The festival falls on 15th March 2006. I have collected A Gift Pack of Quotationsfor you contained in the sections DO THINGS DIFFERENTLY and SOMETHING MORE, which are part of the on-going discussion pertaining to my nomination of Idleguy for adminship. You are aware of the tradition that if you throw colored water on flames of burning Holika, you enable a Prahlad to emerge from the flames!!! I again convey Holi greetings to you and your family!!! --Bhadani 14:27, 4 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Why so few Wikipedians are engineers?

[edit]

I am trying to understand why there are so few Wikipedians who are graduate engineers. Once I get a grasp on that, perhaps I may be able to formulate some ideas on how to attract more experienced engineers to become Wikipedians. It would be very helpful if you would respond to these a few questions:

  • Are you a university graduate engineer?
  • Please indicate in which of these engineering disciplines you obtained your degree:
    1. Aeronautical or aerospace engineering
    2. Bioengineer or biological engineering
    3. Chemical engineering
    4. Civil engineering
    5. Electrical engineering
    6. Environmental engineering
    7. Mechanical engineering
    8. Petroleum engineering
    9. Other
  • In what year did you obtain your degree?
  • What attracted you to participate in Wikipedia?

If you would rather not answer these questions on your Talk page, then you may respond on my User talk:mbeychok page. Or you may respond to me via Wikipedia's email which I have enabled on my User:mbeychok page.

If you would rather not respond at all, that's fine also. Regards, - mbeychok 04:28, 4 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Dore, thanks for your response. I am a retired chemical engineer and also 83 years old. I would like to send you a Wikipedia email, but you have not enabled that feature. Perhaps, you don't know about it. First, you go to your User:Dore chakravarty page and click on the "My preferences" tab at the page top. Then about halfway down that page, on the right hand side, you will see a small box where you can check to enable your receiving email via Wikipedia. Besides checking that box, on that same page, you must furnish your email address (as part of your ID) to Wikipedia.
If you wish to send me a Wikipedia email, go to my User:Mbeychok page. On the left hand side, just below the Search box, you will see "E-mail this user". Click on that and you can send me an email because I have enabled that feature. Regards, - mbeychok 07:19, 5 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry Sir

[edit]

As promised I could not come to your place in Chennai yesterday. I did not telephone to you, as I was feeling guilty. I will try to come in next three/ four days, after ascertaining your convenience over phone. Sorry Sir. Regards. --Bhadani 07:50, 8 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No you are the SIR. Actually, yesterday I was "taken" by "force" by my wife to Koyembedu Fruit Market to buy mangoes, etc. You know - we can not disobey our wike, that is the Indian culture. And, to-day, I went to "vote", and right now I got your message. I shall meet you = that is sure. And, I am waiting for the surprise, which you had promised. Regards. --Bhadani 10:57, 8 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
A wikipedian shall talk like this, instead of ringing you ... hahhhaha. --Bhadani 10:59, 8 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Oh Sir, really! You are giving me a surprise when I meet you in person. Done now - I am coming to you this Saturday or Sunday, and before coming I shall surely ring you. I am really sorry for the delay on my part, and look forward to meeting you. Regards. --Bhadani 14:11, 12 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Was not clear what you were trying to do, are you trying to nominate an article from a different wiki for the English Wikipedia Did You Know section? We don't typically take articles from other sources. The chimney article here is not new and not eligible. Your note also was placed at the very bottom of the page where it would likely not be noticed. Please reply here to keep this conversation threaded. ++Lar: t/c 17:48, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes sir

[edit]

Oh, no Sir, no one is "useless" and I respect and admire you. I shall call you from my office tomorrow and try to meet you very shortly. Respectful regards. --Bhadani 13:27, 30 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sir, in fact I too want to talk and meet with you - I promise I shall try to meet you by this Sunday, sure. Thank you for your kind words and confidence in me. I would surely try to learn lessons of life from you, sir. I really regret the delay and look forward to have a meeting with you. Thanks and regards. --Bhadani 13

Do we really need 4 articles on the same subject??

[edit]

Wikipedia now has these 4 articles, all on the same subject:

Do we really need all of these? In my opinion, this sort of thing reflects badly on Wikipedia. What can we do to get these four articles merged?? - mbeychok 18:02, 23 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yah. Look at [1]. OR=Orphaned, LQ=low quality. I'm saying that this image isn't being used on Wikipedia, so why have it? And also, I don't think we should use this image since it's a scan of a hand drawing, and it would be possible to create a free, higher quality, version on this image. --MECUtalk 04:23, 4 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding the merging of 4 articles on the same subject

[edit]

Some time ago, I questioned whether or not Wikipedia needed 4 articles on the same subject, namely: Fossil fuel power plant, Power station, Thermal power station, and Steam-electric power plant. It was my opinion that the Steam-electric power plant article was the poorest of the four and the Thermal power station article was only marginally any better.

As one octagenarion retired engineer (I am now 84) to another, I know that you wrote most of the Thermal power station article but, in my honest opinion, it is far from being of the same quality as the Fossil fuel power plant and Power station articles. Please excuse me for saying that, but it is my honest opinion.

In any event, after I suggested that we did not need all four articles, I received enough comments both for and against to conclude that deleting any of the four (or even merging them) would become very controversial and confrontational ... so I have abandoned the idea of merging the four articles.

If I may suggest, the content of the various images (drawings) in the Thermal power station article may be quite good, but the rendering of the drawings is very poor. Many look as if they were hand-drawn rather than using professional software for drawing diagrams and flow sheets. Many are also very difficult to read unless they are greatly enlarged. They simply are not up to the standards of good Wikipedia images (i.e., drawings, diagrams, flow sheets). I would strongly suggest that you have them all completely redone. To avoid any suggestion of "conflict of interest", I would also remove your name from the drawings and their captions (for example, your inclusion of wordings such as "Dores-Boiler cycle" and "Dores-Turbine cycle" might be construed as bad form).

I value your friendship and I hope you will take my comments about the [[Thermal power station] article purely as being constructive criticism. With best regards, - mbeychok 03:28, 22 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Dore chakravarty. Could you please let me know which articles you are referring to? Please put your response on my talk page so that I will be alerted to it. Power plant articles

[edit]

Hi, Dore chakravarty.

I am not sure whether your objection to having all of the articles is that you think that the terms are equivalent or that they should all be merged into one article. If you think that they should be merged, then my response is that the resulting article would be too large, even when redundancies are eliminated. We split up subjects on Wikipedia so that the articles will not take too long to load, which makes things difficult for visitors and editors, especially when the site is running slowly. If you think that the terms are equivalent, below I have explained what each covers.

Thermal power plant – includes all power plants that use heat to produce electricity, such as nuclear, fossil fuel, biomass and solar thermal electric.

Steam electric power plant – includes all power plants that use steam to turn turbines to produce electricity. All steam electric power plants are thermal power plants, but not all thermal power plants are steam electric power plants. For example, solar dish arrays that use Sterling engines are thermal power plants, but not steam electric. Also, hydroelectric plants, wind farms and photovoltaic arrays are not steam electric or thermal power plants.

Power plant or power station – includes all forms of electricity generation, including nuclear and fossil fuel plants, as well as hydroelectric plants and other things that do not use steam or heat to produce electricity.

Fossil fuel power plant – includes natural gas, coal and oil fueled power plants. However, it is not synonymous with thermal power plant, steam electric power plant or power plant/station.

Please let me know if I have failed to answer your question properly. Also, I am sorry that my reply took so long. The only thing I have had time to do on Wikipedia is a little vandalism fighting. Unfortunately, a lot of vandalism in recent months is not getting reverted in a timely manner (timely would definitely be less than 24 hours and hopefully a lot sooner), so if I do not catch the vandalism on the articles in my watchlist, it may stay in the articles indefinitely. Thanks, Kjkolb 12:13, 28 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sir, I am sorry that I did not reply any sooner to your message on my talkpage. I have not been visiting Wikipedia for many months now, and I got your message only today. As of now, Bhadaniji's talk-page is not protected and you should have no problem leaving a message for him. In future, if his talk-page is protected, and you want to contact Bhadaniji, you could send him an e-mail. You can do this by clicking on the "e-mail this user" which you will find on the left side column of his page. It is the 4th link in the "toolbox" section.

I am very glad that you found "Baraha" useful. What is the clarification you wanted on that? Please let me know and I will try my best to help. I find that you are also coming only very occasionally to Wikipedia. Now that you are in NZ, I hope the better computer facilities will induce you to rejoin the community. I will also log on occasionally in anticipation of your message regarding Baraha, so please do reply soon. Regards, ImpuMozhi 01:37, 6 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sir, I find from searching with google that SQM stands for Service Quality Monitor. Beyond that, I know nothing and my knowledge of technical matters is limited. I have never received e-mails in Kannada and so I do not know what the problem is. Basically I use Baraha only for typing in Indian scripts. I would suggest you take the help of some techno-savvy person. I also will ask around and see if anyone can help. Regards, ImpuMozhi 12:57, 25 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
