"why can't I share truth" - on the one hand, two published articles in reliable sources that support "1995". On the other hand, a random Wikipedia user who says "I remember it being 1997". truth be known, in 1997 we rolled directly -through- the Seafair parade cutting across town barreling through downhill, accidentally picking the same day. we were not disappointed by the lack of the mainstream media coverage, as we wanted to pretend like we didn't really cause as much mayhem as transpired. Stranger wasn't aware back then, until the next year... or did it take them 2 years until Tony got smeared out of the Rendez's back door? there's this http://www.abcdzyne.org/dbb/fc/raceend2.htm but then there's still the questioning of me as a source bullshit there... Ben didn't have a yellow jersey in 1997, so who did? NO ONE, can you show me a -SINGLE SOURCE- that claims it first happened in 1996, and not just cluelessness with your https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Off-by-one_error off-by-one problem? I've been consistent for 24+ years in my reportage never saying "Anniversary" and instead saying "Annual" to avoid this problem, but no, I guess I'm the Ivy league Engineer that needs to argue this nonsense with fools ad infinitum. there was an article in the Stranger year 3, but the link here >> http://abcdzyne.org/dbb/fc/grimness.htm is broken, and besides I don't remember there being any decisive "it's the third one" stuff in it anyway... more thorough searches performed through Stranger archives for half the day yesterday resulted in no discovery. why do you so strongly believe it was first in 1996? any sources besides bad math are acceptable, but I really have not been lying for over 24-some years about it, please? --dx

Okay.

First: regardless of the truth, we have to go with what the published sources say. The problem with "I was there, I promise, I have no reason to lie" is that it sets a terrible precedent. For instance, consider "I promise that <celebrity who recently died> was of <ethnic group X>, really, I promise, I knew him, I have no reason to lie" . That's something we've had to deal with a lot, and sometimes two people who both promise that they "HAVE NO REASON TO LIE" blatantly contradict each other. This is why one of our fundamental principles is "Verifiability". The distinction between verifiability and truth can be tricky. "I know this is true, but I don't have a source I can cite, so I can't put it in the article" is a very annoying feeling.

Second: the published sources I was able to find last time say "20th anniversary in 2016" and ""17th anniversary in 2013". Simple arithmetic indicates that this means DBDB started in 1996. However, it's been pointed out to me that people are not always consistent with how they use the word "anniversary".

Third: since the last time you and I had this little dispute re: DBDB, I have gained access to some very extensive newspaper archives, which is how I found this article, that includes the phrase "Started in 1997 as a ride for the handful of Dead Baby bike shop workers and their friends."
