Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- There is a new user right for users who can edit CSS and JavaScript for the entire wiki. Before this all admins could edit CSS and JavaScript. This was a security risk. This group is called interface administrators. Administrators can delete user CSS and JavaScript pages. [8][9]
- There will be an A/B test on the Wikipedia mobile website. It starts this week. It tests how we show templates that show information about an article. The test will last two weeks. [10][11]
- You can now use different CSS rules for different skins when you edit templates. This is because of TemplateStyles. [12]
wp10
in ORES is now calledarticlequality
. [13]- When you get a new message on your talk page you get a yellow message in the toolbar. The preference to show or not show this has been removed. [14]
Problems
- UploadWizard had problems with campaigns. Users could not upload files. This has now been fixed. [15]
- You can get a notification when a link is made to a page you created. This has not worked since June. It was fixed last week. [16]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 4 September. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 5 September. It will be on all wikis from 6 September (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 5 September at 15:00 (UTC). See how to join.

Cash coins
@Baomi: as you don't like it when others message you on your talk page I ping you here, please take a look at "List of Chinese cash coins by inscription", I used mostly English language resources with some additional Chinese and Taiwanese ones, if you know of more cash coins then please add them. --Donald Trung (talk) 19:00, 4 September 2018 (UTC)
it's ture I sometime didn't response the message on my talkpage, but I like to talk with others on my page. and I'll add the missing coins to the list as far as possible--Baomi (talk) 11:08, 5 September 2018 (UTC)
Disambiguation link notification for September 6
An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Liao dynasty coinage, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Tang (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver).

Reminder
I'm sure you've already seen it, but I'll repeat it here to avoid any doubt: your unblock conditions include banned from all talkspaces except Article, Talk, User, and User talk
and Any more screwing around or boundary-testing—as defined by me, not you—means you're gone for good
, and as well as your goofing around on Jimbo's talk we can all see that you're still playing around with templates in breach of your ban. If you feel your unblock conditions are too harsh, I give you my express permission to breach the "no edits to Wikipedia space" condition by posting an appeal to WP:AN. Courtesy notification to Cyberpower678. ‑ Iridescent 21:04, 13 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Iridescent: I appealed to Cyberpower678 and the ban on template: And template talk: Namespaces was lifted. I'm pretty sure that he or she can confirm it here. --Donald Trung (talk) 21:11, 13 September 2018 (UTC)
- Also how was I "goofing around" for simply asking a question? --Donald Trung (talk) 21:13, 13 September 2018 (UTC)
- He is correct, that I lifted restrictions to the namespaces he's mentioned, as I've deemed it to be unproblematic to do so, but I have denied his request to edit the Wikipedia namespace, given his history there.—CYBERPOWER (Chat) 21:54, 13 September 2018 (UTC)
- His restrictions, and amendments are documented at WP:Editing Restrictions.—CYBERPOWER (Chat) 21:58, 13 September 2018 (UTC)
(edit conflict)
- @Cyberpower678: I never appealed for all "Wikipedia:" Spaces, only WikiProjects such as Wikipedia:WikiProject Numismatics which are hardly comparable to for example WP:BITE. Not sure what bad behaviour I've ever engaged in with any WikiProject. --Donald Trung (talk) 22:01, 13 September 2018 (UTC)
- You've been very well behaved since I unblocked you, so I saw no issue lifting restrictions to namespaces you were never a problem in. But with Wikipedia, you will need to appeal to AN in this case and have the community decide on this one.—CYBERPOWER (Around) 01:40, 14 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Cyberpower678: then would you agree to lift the ban on all non-Wikipedia namespaces? As it would seem easier than to request them all one by one, also as per "you're gone for good" where I've never seen a non-WMF ban that's unappealable I have no intent on ending up at a ban where not even the ArbCom can overturn it, so you don't have to worry for any "boundary testing". --Donald Trung (talk) 05:36, 14 September 2018 (UTC)
- I'm hesitant to do that at this time. As of 2 days ago, per your original unblock conditions, because you have been keeping in line with your restrictions, you are now allowed to participate in deletion and AfC discussions. Keep in mind though that if you are being a disruption, your permission to participate there will be revoked again. I would like to see positive interactive behavior from you in those areas before considering additional appeals to namespace restrictions.—CYBERPOWER (Chat) 14:27, 14 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Cyberpower678: isn't Wikipedia supposed to be a volunteer project? Because I have no intention to participate in AfD (not AfC) discussions, in fact I'm not even allowed to edit "Draft:" Namespaces in case an article gets moved there and some content could be added that could prove its notability. And as I would rather focus on more content-centric projects like Wikimedia Commons where I'm at least allowed to participate in discussions regarding the policies of the content I edit I would rather not waste what little free time I have with AfD discussions unless it happens to be an article I happen to come across. Also in the original unblock conditions I was allowed to edit there immediately anyhow, you changed it to 6 (six) months after an unblock. --Donald Trung (talk) 14:39, 14 September 2018 (UTC)
- I don't recall changing it after your unblock. In either event you can freely participate there now, because you asked for it when your unblock was being discussed. I'll open up access to the Draft and it's talk space though.—CYBERPOWER (Chat) 14:51, 14 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Cyberpower678: I'll take that for now, I'll archive this discussion tonight as it's not about content. --Donald Trung (talk) 14:56, 14 September 2018 (UTC)
