AfD Nomination: Doc Chopper

Hi Doc. I noticed you left a comment on the Doc Chopper talk page. While there's nothing at all wrong with using the talk page, you should probably also take part in the discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Doc Chopper. People do best when they keep their comments brief and to the point. Providing newspaper references could go a long way to demonstrating notability, and the faster you can do this, the more likely it is that the article will stay. In general we look for multiple, non-trivial mentions in significant publications (National papers, specialist magazines etc.). Articles that are passing mentions or appear to be promotional are generally not acceptable. You do not have to have an online link to the article to use it - provide proper citations (publication name, article title, date, author -if named-, and page numbers) and people can look them up in libraries.

You might also take a look at our conflict of interest guideline since you appear to be breaching it and this will impact people's perception of your editing. If you need help leave me a message at the bottom of my talk page. -- Siobhan Hansa 20:33, 8 April 2007 (UTC)

If you want to dispute the proposed deletion of Doc Chopper, you should add your comments to the AfD debate. Adding the {{hangon}} tag to the article doesn't do anything. I have removed the hangon tag again as it isn't appropriate in this situation. Best, Gwernol 20:29, 8 April 2007 (UTC)

Hi doc. I appreciate you are trying to provide information on a subject that is not well covered here. But the links and some of the content you have been adding to articles are not appropriate for our encyclopedia. Promoting individual bike shops, especially with external links is considered spamming, and such links fail our external links guidelines. Links to forums and noticeboards are also inappropriate. In general content and links should encyclopedic in nature, providing a critical look at the history, influences and impact of a subject. We are not a portal or promotional platform.

I hope you are not discouraged by the reverts your recent edits have suffered. Your experience in the custom chopper bicycle design world could be a great boon to Wikipedia, and I encourage you to continue to edit. Message on my talk page

Hi doc. I'm just signing off so will reply in more depth tomorrow. Because of the nature of Wikipedia not all articles are scrutinized as thoroughly as others. So it's likely you will have found several articles that make it seem like your style is fine, when the reality is other editors just haven't got to them yet. Look at some of our good articles to see what we're really aiming for.

In general, Wikipedia is considered a tertiary source, that is - we publish a summary of things that have already been printed by good secondary sources. so we really need newspaper articles, books (it seems like a very visually impactfull medium, are there any photobooks of the bikes?) printed magazines etc. in order to develop an article. This is what we're talking about when we say "notable". I'll add more tomorrow. -- Siobhan Hansa 03:23, 9 April 2007 (UTC)

Hi doc. To answer your questions-

1. User:Doc Chopper hasn't already been taken, so the best thing to do is to create a new account under that user name, move (see the tab at the top that says move) and then [[WP:Redirect|redirect] this talk page and your current user page to User talk:Doc Chopper and User:Doc Chopper. There is a way for bureaucrats to actually change your account, but it's generally only used when the above is insufficient for some reason. If you need help with the move and redirect let me know when you've created the other account - anyone can do this for you.

2. For referencing the magazine I suggest using our {{Cite journal}} template. Mainly because they have the fields you need to fill in written into them so it's easy to remember. On the the article write whatever the magazine article is going to back up, then put in an open reference tag, the completed cite template and a close reference tag. It should end up looking something like this:

<ref>{{cite journal | last = You Need | first = The Author's Name | date = January/February 2007 | title = You need the title of the article | journal = Strutter Magazine | volume = 1| issue = 1| pages = You should have the page numbers the article is on (e.g pp 15-17)}}</ref>

Note: You really need the author's name if the article has a byline, and you need the title of the article. the page numbers would be good. If you have information for any of the other fields put those in too. I choose the cite journal template because it seemed most appropriate to a magazine, but there are a whole range of different ones at Wikipedia:Citation templates. And this isn't the only way to cite, you can read more at WP:CITE.

After putting this in you'll also need to put a reference section into the article where the reference will show up as a footnote. To do this, below the main body of the article, but before any categories or external links sections put in:

In the end the article should look like:

Redirect from Doc Chopper article

Doc,I've undone the redirect you placed on the Doc Chopper article. We don't allow articles to be redirected to another wikipedia "space" (The site is split into different "spaces" that reflect their functions - Article space is where all the articles sit, User space is where all the user accounts sit, Wikipedia (or WP) space is where the administrative pages site etc. Redirecting across different namespaces is not allowed because people will think they are going to an rticle when they're actually being sent to a user page). Hello, I noticed you've moved your user page and user talk page from "DocChopper" to "Doc Chopper". You Tube link

Hi Doc. You can't actually use the link. The TV program is copyrighted and the You Tube version is a clear breach of copyright which our policy forbids us from doing. But you can reference the TV program - You need to provide at least the name of the show, the channel it was on and the date/time it was broadcast. If you know more details, like the segment, the production company, the epsode/volume number of the program, those are good too. You'd probably type something like:

Doc and his bikes have been featured on various television shows including Miami Ink and Deco Drive.<ref>Decco Drive, first broadcast [[March 12th]] [[2007]], 12:30 pm, KTEH.<ref>

You might like to mention (sneakily!) on the talk page that there is a copy on YouTube but you know we can't link to it. I notice you haven't put up the reference to the magazine coverage. Are you having difficulty with that?
